Description BIG EDIT. Now that I have a dedicated scanner, I decided to rescan this and boy, its so much different from the original scan. As you should be able to tell now, the colors are much more vibrant then originally shown.

I have been often been asked something like this, "If you have Ps CS5, a computer that would make many gamers envious, and an Intuos4 Graphics Tablet, why are you doing space art in PRISMACOLOR PENCILS?"

Well, being a traditional artist from my beginnings of my extreme art hobby, I feel it is more fulfilling to do stuff literally by hand, pencil and paper. I know easily I could do a picture like this digitally with a fricken mouse and the quality would be better. But to me, that is not gratifying to do, not with my immense background in Prismacolor pencils and other traditional means.

And even for rare traditional space art, pencil is rare within that. I mostly see paintings or at closest, graphite/charcoal or white charcoal/pencil on black. And hence why I changed this picture's title from Juggernaut (referring to the gas giant) to Undaunted (referring to the pride in what I do with Prismacolors).

The screw up in color choice for the nebula still bothers me, but not as bad as it had when I realized I had made it. There is one other major flaw in the design, but I think only versed space artists/enthusiasts will notice it.

So... I guess the specs I could share would be:
~8.5" x 11" sheet of black card stock, twice as large as my previous major space piece, "Catastrophic Cataclysm."
~More then half of my color selection from my pencil collection was used.
~Despite starting this around the end of last year and finishing it yesterday, I really doubt I spent more than 25 hours on this in raw labor, if even that.

Not too informative progress:

WIP2: [link]
WIP3: [link]
WIP4: [link]

I only recorded three references that I used:

~A class - Odin by Voyger212
At this time I still consider this my favorite gas giant piece/ref/inspiration as I used it for Catastrophic Cataclysm AND Colossus ACEO too.

~Antheron by DemosthenesVoice
Mostly just for another color ref for how colors look relative to each other on the Giant's atmospheric layers.

~Nebula tutorial by Voyager212
Hopefully you can look at that one and figure out where I got the crazy colors for my nebula, which when I originally printed off the bottom image to ref I did not intend to duplicate the colors. I wanted to use a two color theme... but for some reason... I .... uhh... kinda copied it... without thinking when I was distracted at work starting it.

And finally, I waited so long to submit anything lately cause I wanted this piece specifically submitted in my gallery side by side with Steam Powered Fox, to kinda show two of my most favorite but very different genres side by side: Spacescapes and Steampunk Mechs.

Unrelated note:
My new computer upgrades are all in that I want. The final specs are something like this:
~AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition Processor (3.4 GHz)
~16GB RAM
~1GB DDR3 Graphics RAM
~Still got me old 1TB hard drive though. |3 Will need a secondary one soon with my ultra high res scans I do (ex: this raw scan was a 1.39GB file).

The irony! Old fashion art above! High tech stuff down here! |3

I want this machine to do stream and video recording, but with how my tradition webcam keeps giving me the blue screen of death and no obvious way I can find on the internet to fix it... well... I will need a new webcam. And I still need a decent video editing software. A guy I watch uses Adobe Premier Elements so I am looking at that.

P.S. I don't really do gaming much.

Now, that's impressive. It's a rare thing to see something like this, and so well done, too.

Well that is impressive you drew this! And I would have to agree that there is a great sense of satisfaction in having created something you can hold in your hands.

I think you did a great job on this piece and I especially like the compositioning! - How there's no "dead space" in the piece.. Great job on coloring as well

Gorgeous! Great composition, colors and general skill. I enjoy drawing with Prismacolor pencils too so it's really cool to see someone creating epic works of art with them.

I'm guessing here that you use Prismacolors because they have a higher wax content? I have a mix of Prismas and Crayolas, and I'm noticing that the Prismas are not only better at coverage, the colors are so much more vibrant against black paper.
I use the Crayolas because they don't shatter like RoseArt (which I think is shit anyway, pardon my French) and because they were what I could afford at the time. I'd love to get a dialogue going if you have the time.

Lol, actually, I just use Prismas because I spent so long developing myself on such a cheap media and I could buy them locally to start off way back in 2005 or something. I tried Derwent studio but ended up not liking them.

I want to eventually start mixing pastels and Prismacolors together. Doing whole pictures in Prismacolors is quite taxing on my hands (such as Undaunted) so I want to find some alternatives. Markers proved to be too expensive and clumsy to carry around and of course cannot do anything for black paper.

Right now I am in a sort of vacation from traditional art and in a sort, DA in general, hence this very laggish reply.

I had a friend who used Crayolas for ages and her black paper drawings looked awful. Prismacolors definitely helped when she got some.

I believe someone could say Prismacolors are the low/cheap end of the Professional pencils. But I could care less. Whatever works! Faaaantastic.

Thanks. ^_^ My pencil medias mean just about everything to me. I could do without a graphics tablet and/or Illustrator CS5 and be juuuuust fine.

I think this is actually rather simple and not terribly difficult. The lack of pencil space art out there is probably more just a lack of willingness or confidence to do it. On the flip side, it absolutely baffles me how people make photo realistic drawings from photographs. c.c'

Indeed you could!

I've never tried traditional space art but now I think I'd like to! I was rather baffled to read somewhere that a group declined it- it looks better than a lot of digital stuff with the advantage of layers and semi-transparency.

I suck at making humans, maybe I should try something else. I'm inspired!!

*psst-if there was any group I had ever met that I feel I could legitably say this about, it is that particular group*

They are not elitists as much as people to screw with you. So yah, I am probably done with that group. At least past elitist groups TRY and give me some bullshit reason its not good enough for their education.

Humans... no thanks. |3

Ugh, some a few groups on DA are run by people like that. They are totally not worth a second of anyone's time, they just discourage.

Once, a photo of mine was declined b/c someone said it was grainy... fine, but the mod had photos that said *in the comments* that they were grainy- but when I asked about it and what to do in the future they said the photo in question wasn't grainy and wouldn't say how they fixed it... and that I couldn't be helped.

Absolutely amazing, my friend. ^___^ You are truly gifted with colored pencils! I personally think the quality is exceptional. Your shading and details are remarkable, and the traditional media makes everything look very organic and tangible, maintaining the usual mind-blowing epic look of the space scene while making it more beautiful. My favorite parts are those lovely nebulae! Even if you said that you messed up a color choice, they look simply divine to me. I adore how you are able to transition from color to color in a sudden but smooth manner, capturing the surrealistically bright and enchanting look of these formations in a way that is marvelously pleasing to look at and incredibly realistic, at least to those of us not particularly well-versed in space phenomena.

Keep up the great work! I really enjoyed this one.

Wall of text comment that I love and adore. Thanks Peachiekee. =3

I tried really hard on this to make it the ultimate testament of my pencil work. Probably will never do this again exactly. I plan to use liquid whites of some sort for stars, because doing the stars in this in White Pencil raped the lead. c_c;

I like it. I imagine that the rings were difficult. You have the longest description I have ever seen on DA.

EclipsisStudios In reply to Gershom [2011-08-06 04:14:16 +0000 UTC]

I did not even notice this one was so long. |3 I guess my widescreen makes it seem short. I know I have done longer but that's trivial.

I dunno, I think with the 6-7 years I have been on DA, I think leaving comments about "thoughts, hopes, dreams" makes a person seem so much more real and down to earth to the DA community. While I don't think people HAVE to read what I type, I do get frustrated when I find a really, epic piece, especially on say a DD, and there is like one or two lines of text. It makes me feel they do not really care about their posting here. Just a job, another place for grunt work exposure.

I kinda treat my submissions like my life journal beyond just the actual journal journal. I like to share the experience of creating something treasured, and I like to share in other people's. At least I better keep up my end of the deal. =3

(and yes, I know a lot of them cannot speak/type English, but that does not make them any less intangible)

[and also yes, I do write prose as a hobby on top of this one, just beware of my hellish grammar and dyslexia. ]

Btw, thanks, I appreciate the comment. =3

Longest reply I've ever seen too! hahaha.

I can appreciate that. It is always nice to get a little banter and background with your art. I take so long to get to a scanner that I barely remember what was going on when I drew something.

I probably scan my pictures for a ridiculously long time too if that matters! All are 1GB+ files, including the ACEOs. I just do it cause I can I guess. x3 Aged to perfection I guess. |3
