Description Located on the Breckenridge, CO side of Boreas Pass- about 8 miles up.....there only like 7 or 8 of these old water tanks left in the U. S. They used to supply water to the Steam Locomotives that serviced the area...

Except for the spout, and the fact that they're found on the tops of tall buildings, there's thousands of them in New York City. In fact, every building has one to provide pressure for it's water supply. See: [link]

There was a very interesting "Dirty Jobs" episode (Discovery Channel, April 14, 2008) where Mike Rowe helped replace a NYC water tower.

yeah i know - i grew up in boston.
but i think there are referring to the ones used to supply water to the steam locomotives - with the spout.
and that's what the info sign referred to in font of the water tank in lusk, wy
but all the ones i use to see in boston where metal.
i did look at the link, but in the short time - i only saw one and it was wooden......
thanks
plus i'm sure they didn't count the one at the base of mt washington in NH - that was used for the cog railway - but their locomotives are now diesel (?) the steam ones were always fun to watch.

I'm sure they were. I thought I had qualified my remark sufficiently. Anyway, I was surprised to see that the technology (wooden water tanks) is alive and well!

Regarding Mt. Washington Cog Railway - I'm saddened to hear that they're running diesels, but I see that you are correct [link] .

no the old The Denver,South Park & Pacific RR - tracks long gone - now an auto road this tank and the old Round House at Como, CO are all that are left - i think ?
i made a special trip to up there ( boreas pass) to get a couple of shots of it.
and
i'm hopin' tues (if i can get the morning off) sept 28th - UP 3685 - the Challenger - will be pulling the circus train into denver - unassisted (?) - it's suppose to leave (speer) cheyenne wy someting between 7-8 am
we'll see......
i got to see UP 844 on it's way to pendelton or sept 8th between medicine bow and hanna wy - and it was unassisted. sweeeet site to see it without that diesel !
