def a neat loco - it was used yearly - for the cheyenne , wy frontier days rodeo - the denver post train - this past year a lady was filming it at brighton, co - she was right on the tracks - she was struck and killed - UP just announced UP 844 will no longer pull the frontier days train from denver to cheyenne - - but the big boy is nearing completion - UP 4014 - you can go on the UP site and read more
UP has a steam page - gives dates when it runs

Two GEVO's backing up 844 here. Β I can see why too. Β With that many cars behind her, 844 needs the help, since she's a passenger engine and heavy hauling over grades isn't what she's built for. Β Pity though that we probably won't ever get to see her break 100+ mph in excursion service.
Would love it though if UP would simply consider some the idea of 844 pulling a 100 mph excursion on the Northeast Corridor just to demonstrate she can still run at over 100.

there's no big grades on this run - denver to cheyenne - think one for elec power to the passenger cars - the other for safety ???
i was following her between rock river, wy and medicine bow - we were doing 82 - she was moving - and silent

Sweet!!! That looks seriously cool. I wish I could witness this type of scene in person someday...
I was wondering how UP selects the engineer to run the 844, as I bet that this is a coveted run.

yes - not freight service though - - special service - it runs around the country a lot - it was the last steam locomotive delivered to UP in 1944

Wonderful shot!
But why do they need to use the steam locomotive if they have diesels behind?

thanks
the diesel from what others have said are for dynamic braking and to provide power.
this is the last steam locomotive delivered to union pacific in 1944
i've only seen it once un-assisted and it looked nice....
