Oh wow....this is absolutely incredible! It took me a while to realize that's the real thing and not something you altered in photoshop. Great shot.

I read what you said about getting there, no way to just drive to I guess? I have roamed allot been over most of Utah, but I am afraid my long hiking days are over, so I will have to visit there through your eyes. Thanks for sharing.

you can ! it's a short (1 mile hike) on cedar mesa - west of blanding ut - up the south fork of mule canyon
it's a granary - not a habitation dwelling.
depending on the time of year - the magic hour is usually after 10 am and before noon.....
it's all public land......
there's alot of way cool ruins on cedar mesa - do a flickr photo search - for
falling roof ruin
moon house
the doll house
target ruin
mud streak ruin
the bird house
the citadel
perfect kiva
jailhouse ruin
there a lot of ruin there...

This is a fantastic photograph. So fantastic, in fact, that I've used it as an example of great photography in an article that is part of Project Educate: In Color: Architecture . Thanks for creating great work and I hope the feature helps bring even more attention to you and your work.

thanks, but that's what it is a photograph - i created nothing !
it is what you see - no photoshop shenanigans !
hence the name - house of fire - or - roof of fire - or - flaming roof ruin......
the ancient pueblo (anasazi) indians deserve the credit ! they picked this spot for their granary not me !
i just photographed their work - they lived in and were part of the land.....
there are ruins that dot the south western part of the U S that us similar elements in nature that they integrated into their granaries and dwellings !
some others......
honeycomb ruin
fallen roof ruin
mud streak ruin
and many more.......
they were definitely part of the land.
but thanks for the comp on my piece

You may not have created the original structure... but you captured it so perfectly that it truly looks like a house on fire. Sometimes the amazing skill of photography is being able to communicate a specific site or experience and I think you created an amazing atmosphere here.

yeah it's pretty wild and a short hike,
it's a very popular spot on cedar mesa - west of blanding, ut and it's an almost noon day sun.
there's another ruin (granary) with way cool play of light and color - called falling roof ruin
google them in - it show their locations on the map....

thanks !
haven't heard from you in awhile ? did you winter well ?
how's the teton/yellowstone area doing ??? i miss it !
house of fire is sweeeet ! that's a cool place - there's other nice granaries with fascinating cave roof formations above them.
like - honeycomb and falling roof ruin...., but being down there in the summer is like climbing into an oven, it was real hot when i was there this past week (may 13th thru the 22nd)
p.s my house of fire shot was taken about 11:50 am ? who says you shouldn't take pics at high noon ????
thanks again.
later

p.s if you go and need any directions to any of these ruins/granaries in and around cedar mesa give me a shout.

Yeah last semester was incredibly busy and between school and a lot of other things I had drifted away from DA for a bit. Hopefully I can make my way down south this summer and if i do I will be sure to ask for directions to those places!

Good angle so you capture the overhang. Would this be along the Grand Gulch trail? I'm heading to the 4 corners area in mid June and plan on exploring that trail, Comb Ridge, Mule Canyon, Butler Wash, Goosenecks SP, Hovenweep, Valley of the Gods and lastly maybe Mesa Verde. Can you recommend any must see or must hike places down in that area?

eDDie-TK In reply to djohn9 [2010-05-29 14:38:41 +0000 UTC]
this is a short hike up the mule canyon - i think the south fork - def not the the north fork
the road to it - is just before you get to the road-side mule canyon ruins on hwy 95 - just before the ruins is utah cnty road 205 (i think ?) north side of hwy 95
just drive down it a short distance and when you come to the first canyon - park on the grade over it - it's the only parking.
head up canyon for about a mile - it will be on the right side - best light will be anywhere from 10:30 am to noon.
another cool ruin is across the highway from this and a little to the east - called cave towers. it's hard to see the road to it heading west, but when you come out of house of fire and hit the hwy look east you can see it (the road with gate) in a section of trees.
there's like two or three hovenweep like towers there at a seep and all along the south facing cliff there's ruins and granaries, plus a historic grave (pioneer) fenced off at the top of the seep - just a sandstone headstone - no markings.
how long you going for ?
and on the same side as mule canyon - there's arch canyon - full of stuff......
cedar mesa - there's so much to see up there
falling roof ruin in road house canyon off of cigarette springs road off of hwy 261 - about 3 miles in and a 2.5 mile hike - way cool ruin - early to mid-morning. i have a pic of it in my gallery. way cool mother of pearl like water line above the granaries
the citadel ruin at the end of cigarette springs road is another - plus a nice place to camp.
moon house off of snow flats road - about 8.5 miles in - 2.5 mile hike (?)(high clearance) but people do take there cars in - you need a permit to go to it now i think, but you can get one at kane creek ranger staion not far away on hwy 261 the hwy between cedar mesa and the goosenecks - "the moki dugway" i hate going down it - brake burn up, but i love going up it....at the top there's a road that heads south to muley point - great vista and another nice place to camp. you can see monument valley from there.
as for valley of the gods ? not for me just a dusty drive, but my buddy loves it.
the goosenecks are cool and you can camp there also, not a tree in site - hard rocky ground if you tent camping (?)
bulter wash is loaded with ruins - the butler wash road connects hwy 95 and 191
monarch cave is there the procession panel and at the lower end right off of highway 191 there's the wolfman panel on the north side of the highway and hobbs wash ruin on the south side. monument valley is just a short drive from here.
and the same with comb wash road - does the same thing - connects to both highways. there's a nice campground on the north side on comb right off of hwy 95
if you go south on the comb wash road it will take you to river house ruin at the jct of butler wash and the san juan river and the the remains of an old trading post are there as well.
there's a nice campground (blm) at sand island just south of bluff - the peopel at the visitor center in bluff are very helpful.....
hovenweep is cool, but almost all the ruins are restricted - view from a distance (?)
at least on cedar mesa you can get up close to all the ruins except moon house.
same thing with mesa verde - you view all the ruins from the road above that goes along the the top on the mesa, but you can go in (i think 5 ruins)
spruce tree house at the chapin mesa museum
step house and long house on the wethrill mesa road - i've never been to them - the road has always been closed the times i've been due to snow still on the road way
and you can go to balcony house and cliff palace, but you have to get tickets and i think they cost a couple of bucks now - in the past you could only do one ruin a day, but last year i went in and got tickets for balcony house and a few minutes later went right back in and got tickets for cliff palce - spaced out the time to each about an hour....
balcony house is way cool - i think going in late afternoon is the best - it's an east facing ruin - so morning sun just isn't good - it was way better in shade - you have to climb down in and climb up ladders to get out
cliff place is sweet, but it's a west facing one and when i was there it was in the afternoon and the sun/shade thing didn't work for me taking pics, bit's it's a way cool ruin - the largest cliff dwelling in the world.
the ruins are ranger guided and it's kinda timed so you really don't have alot of time to spend in them before the next group comes along.......like ed abbey would say from the book desert solitare "water ski in a clockwise manner ! lets all have fun together"......
and you know that the four corners marker is not in the right place - it's like 2.5 miles off. they found this out a few years ago - they never re-surveyed after the 1868 survey - i thinks it's 2.5 miles to the east.
think - if you lived down there and all these years you thought you were in colorado and really you were in utah...
there's also some cool stuff at natural bridges national monument on cedar mesa - but you have to do the hike down in it - not bad.
horse collar ruin is there and mud streak ruin is there - mud streak is cool it's below (down creek) a very short distance from kachina bridge - most people miss is cause the trail leading out forks just before it.....later afternoon shot otherwise it's in the sun.
you'll see where people climbed up the steep sandy embankment there.....it's on the right side if you going down creek.
go to google "earth" and look at the area up close (view) and you'll see little blue squares - click on them there are pics of stuff and you can see things and plan accordingly
june is gonna be hot - real hot
it was hot when we where there last week, but comb wash was running - had water in most of the washes.....the wild flowers where spectacular.....
and if your gonna be there june 21st (cedar mesa) see if someone in blanding will tell you where the "lance site" is - it's a major astronomical site and the first day of summer there will be a bunch of people there to view the high noon occurrence....
it's a concentric circle and at high noon a profile of a man's head will appear and at high noon the tip of his nose will touch the center if the circle - the lance site - is a highly kept secret - so ask around - more than once if you get shunned - it's only like 3 miles west of shirt tail corners - south of blanding then west on the hwy 95 (south side of hwy 95) and a mile or so down a dirt (cnty rd with a gate) i can't remember the cnty rd number, but it's like a 200 number(?)by looking at the surrounding terrain you'd never think there was anything there ?
i've always wanted to go to this site on one of the days - like - first day of summer or spring, fall or winter - it even has stuff that shows the in between season - like half way between winter and spring - all having to do with shadow play on petroglyphs.....
pretty awesome
all i can remember is when you leave shirt tail corners ( there's a sinclair gas station there) and head west on hey 95 - you'll drop down and cross westwater creek (?) then climb back up and be on flat ground again - start looking off to your left - south side - maybe you'll see people going in and you can follow them......if you drop back down again to cottonwood wash you've gone to far. - 3 miles at the most !
as for grand gulch on cedar mesa - that's not a day trip ! it's a way cool backpacking trip - i've done it a few times - it's like 54 miles long and just trying to do day trips just doesn't cut it.
but you can go in kane creek for a day and see some cool stuff - jct ruin - turkey pen and maybe make it as far as split level ruin (?)
sheiks trailhead is nice
and bullet
some people will go in bullet to perfect kiva and jailhouse - then go the to jct of bullet and grand gulch and head up to sheiks to see the breech panel and the green mask then climb out of sheiks - long day....and one thing - many people have missed the jct of bullet and grand and just kept going down grand gulch - it all looks the same down there and you'd think grand would be a big canyon, but it's not - so it's real easy to miss the turn - unless the BLM has put up signs ? i haven't been in there for a long time (early 1990's)
let me know if you need any more info
i'm around
if we have to talk on the phone that's cool
have a grrreat memorial day week-end
later
