Oh neat, I've always wanted to try working with a raven. Are they similar to macaws?

He is such a handful. I thought I was prepared fornhim, but I was definitely wrong. He never stops playing, everything is a toy to him. I made the mistake of letting him out in my camper to start his training in there. My camper looks like a tornado hit it. He is even tearing paint off the walls. I have to start his training completely from scratch, you can't even pick him up.

But, even with all the terror, he has moments of being fun and sweet. His is MUCH quieter than Ziggy, but way WAY more active than Ziggy. The great thing about a parrot is that they can hang out in their cage and be content for a while, but he is just into everything he can see. He has been a real challenge. The biting is horrible, the rehabber didn't do a good job working with him when he was younger.

Oh wow he sounds like he is a handful. Good luck with his training.  At least he is quieter. Ziggy would sound like someone was being murdered if he wasn't getting enough attention. I never would of imagined they would be that destructive, with pulling paint off the walls and everything. Hopefully he will come around for you.

I remember hearing Ziggy yell a little, that would have driven me nuts.

He was allowed to roam around the rehabber's facility with no structure or limits, so he has a lot of bad habbits and is super pushy. He won't stand on your arm at all, so I can't handle him. Crate trainig is his first challenge, then he is getting his butt kicked out into his chamber rather than my camper. He has been such a challenge, but the moments of fun where he plays with me and lets me scratch his head have been really worth it. He is getting good at tricking me into getting too close when we play and biting me

Hopefully now that you have added structure to his daily routine things will approve. The Macaw at the pet store use to trick people that same way, would act all nice and friendly and than when the person got close enough he would try and bite them.

I managed to get him into his outdoor chamber yesterday. His attitude has changed dramatically out there! He has stepped up a few times with little biting, and even asks me to pet him for a while. I think not being around him 24/7 has made him see me as a much better thing, like my attention is a treat, not just something that will always be around. The only problem he has right now is that he screams when he can't see me. (Guess he is more like a macaw than I thought afterall!)

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting

    On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;

And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,

        And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;

And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor

                Shall be lifted—nevermore!

           Because he is too cute.

After he is talking, Nevermore will be on his list of things to learn

Oh this is a real beauty and I love the name you gave him, I am guessing you named him Edgar after Poe? Awesome shot

EdgedFeather In reply to LuLupoo [2017-03-12 18:26:16 +0000 UTC]

The rehabber we got him from named him Edgar. Since they are such smart creatures, I didn't want to change his name just in case he started to learn that was his name. The only way I would change it is if we find out he is actually a girl

LuLupoo In reply to EdgedFeather [2017-03-12 19:30:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh ok I thought maybe you named him after Edgar Allan Poe
lol. Yes I heard the same thing, that they are very smart birds.
I know it must be very difficult to tell the difference the male
and female when it comes to birds. What would you call her
if it turns out to be a girl lol.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EdgedFeather In reply to LuLupoo [2017-03-12 21:59:08 +0000 UTC]

I am fairly certain that is where the rehabber got his name

It is easier to tell with our other birds because the females tend to be much larger in raptors, but with ravens there isn't a largely noticable size difference, so DNA is the only way for us to know for sure. I haven't figured out what to call him if he is a she. I will cross that path when I come to it haha

Oh ok thank you for telling, its always good to learn something
new. I never knew that about the birds. They are indeed such
beautiful birds.

He's adorable.  I love how sleek and shiny he is and his bright eye.  We have two on display at CRC, and an education raven, Diaval.  They have taught Diaval how to paint like they have done for some of the vultures, and her 'art" will be sold at our gift shop.  None of ours have talked, but we used to have one who could do a perfect imitation Sonora, the boss of the display Harris Hawks.

He is such a handful haha. He is just under a year old right now. I am currently training him to go inside of a crate willingly, but after that, he will be learning to put money in a box. I am still figuring out what else I want to teach him. He already plays catch really well He is working on talking. The rehabber said he didn't talk, but I have heard him very clearly say "Hello" and "How are you", he just won't say it if he can see me.

What a handsome bird! I've heard ravens are supposed to be very smart. Has he proven himself yet?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EdgedFeather In reply to The-Vile-Cortex [2017-03-12 03:43:00 +0000 UTC]

He is totally smarter than me! He has been a nonstop handful since I got him last week. He is so full of energy, and EVERYTHING needs to be touched and pecked according to him! I have never worked with a bird like this before, so there is so much I am just learning as I go.

The first night I had him, he stole a fork off the counter and hid it. I couldn't find it for 3 days!

Haha!  What a mischievous guy . . . . crazy birds!

Is he living in your house while you're training him?  That sounds like a fun little nightmare

Yea, he is in my camper with me. I thought it would be easier for me to build a relationship with him if he saw me almost all the time. Boy do I regret that haha! My house is a total wreck!
