she is a very beautiful hawk, but i think that her unusual color might be a problem in the nature, it's probably very easy to spot her from a long distance.

She is in captivity.

i'm aware of that, i meant to say that if she was in the wild her unusual color might be a disadvantage.

Potentially, but there are several that are documented and kept an eye on that have been around for years. Most of them seem to be in the midwest.

having a very noticiable color may take away an advantage(depending on the current location) but that doesnt make it impossible for the bird to survive, that unusual color could be actually good on a very white location like a snowy place or something like that.

A large portion of the birds of prey I photograph are birds I work with, or are birds that friends of mine work with. This one happens to belong to a group called SIA, the Comanche Nation Ethno-ornithological Initiative. She is always a treat to see!

Is she some sort of albino or is it a gene ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EdgedFeather In reply to WolfieYote [2017-02-02 17:13:53 +0000 UTC]

She is Leucistic. It is very similar to albinism, hence why she is white.

But thanks

EdgedFeather In reply to WolfieYote [2017-02-02 22:44:54 +0000 UTC]

Oh ok! Don't worry, most people don't really know what leucism is. Here is the definition:

Leucism is a condition in which there is partial loss of pigmentation in an animal resulting in white, pale, or patchy coloration of the skin, hair, feathers, scales or cuticle, but not the eyes. Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in multiple types of pigment, not just melanin.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EdgedFeather In reply to Candyman4287 [2016-12-07 04:23:02 +0000 UTC]

Haha!

Leucism is a lot like albinism, but typically isn't as severe. This bird is a bit of an exception to that.

EdgedFeather In reply to Kimi-Parks [2016-12-19 04:00:24 +0000 UTC]

No, they happened to be doing a little Pow-wow the day I was there. They are the Comanche Nation's eagle breeding project. They mainly do work with indigenous people around the world.

EdgedFeather In reply to HYPPthe [2016-12-06 00:58:00 +0000 UTC]

I don't, she didn't really want to move around a whole lot. She was quite comfortable watching everything on her perch
