Description A wild juvenile Red Tailed Hawk that hung around at the ranch I live on for a few days. I think he looks pretty handsome

I see these almost as often as I see turkey vultures. I often imagine them as they daytime equivalent to the great horned owl.

They are incredibly common, but still awesome birds!

I have like three different hawks flying in my neighborhood, I'm sure one is a Goshawk out of the other two one has dark bands on its tail, it's not a Redtail cuz the tail's not red. Redtails are bigger than this bird is, the other one has alot of dark color to him. Where can I get a book that shows full shots of the birds in Pennsylvannia? And I got a Horned Owl taking rabbits out of my yard at night and I keep finding pellets under my Cedar Tree, it's good cover. I'll have to go through your pictures to see if you have anything that looks like these birds.  What's your first bird going to be?

It might be a Cooper's Hawk. If you get a picture of it let me know, I'd love to help you ID it (Also, a young Red Tailed Hawk doesn't have a red tail) You can get an ID book at just about any book store or even at places like Walmart. I am from Pennsylvania, so I am pretty familiar with the birds there.

My first bird will be a Red Tail

The one bird with the dark bands are on both sides of its tail, it had a Starling out front of my house Friday, I was looking at it from the kitchen window if I had a camera it was only 25 ft. away. Are there Harris hawks in South Central Pa. ? Yeah I need to see shots of young and mature birds and male and female too I guess for the size difference. You say about the birds of yours, the shots I clicked on are females, is that a must?

If it had a Starling, then it was probably a Cooper's Hawk I would guess. But without seeing it, I wouldn't know for sure.

Not in the wild. Harris Hawks are from the desert southwest, like Texas, Arizona, down through Central and parts of South America.

As far as looks go, males and females almost always look the same as far as their plumage goes (There are a handful of exceptions like Kestrels.) Females can be up to 2/3rds larger than the males. But without seeing both side by side, it can be pretty tough to tell out in the wild. There is a major difference in how juvenile birds look compared to adult birds.

Very nice photo, must be very hard to take a picture of a bird in flight.

Thank you! Sometimes it can be, but this one was soaring so it was pretty easy

Well, I guess you have the necessary amount of experience on photos to make it easy.

Sometimes I get lucky. I still have to practice with birds in flight.
