Description

A view of Grinnell Lake with the mountains Angel Wing in the front and the jagged peak of Mount Gould right behind. The waterfalls on the right come from Upper Grinnell Lake, which is fed by Grinnell Glacier (hidden in the bowl in the top right) and Salamander Glacier (part of it can be seen in the very top right). Both glaciers have receded a lot and will be gone by 2030 (Salamander Glacier probably before that). We will soon see how it will change this area.

Our original plan was to hike all the way up to the glacier. Unfortunately this was as far as we could go. The park officials put up a barricade because it was "too dangerous" to continue. In this case I agreed. A little bit further and the trail was just old snow packs laying in a 50° angle on the mountain. At some points there was water flowing beneath the sheets of snow as well. There was no way to safely pass it without special gear and the skill to use it. I would have loved to see the glacier because now I probably never will before it's gone entirely.

Location: Grinnell Glacier Trail, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA

A very beautiful place even though it is tinged woth sadness when the glacier is gone. Recently in Iceland they have held a ceremony to mark the passing of a glacier.

Yes, it was in the national news here as well. Very sad and it shows that even places that far north are being hit hard.

Photos like this make me a little sad. You've managed to capture the beauty of the place, but as you say, it isn't going to last forever the way we are going. Soon, all we may have to remember this by is pictures like yours, which while beautiful, will never be the same as having the real thing (Sorry for being so negative about something so beautiful).

Yeah no, I feel exactly the same. I also hope to contribute bringing a little more attention to the beauty that we still have and ought to protect. Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment!

Same, it's one of my favourite things to observe in nature. I can't get enough of it.

Beautiful view! There’s so much beauty in nature. It’s shown in your pic too, with the green, vibrant forests, the strong, gray mountains standing tall, reaching up with white snow until it blends into the equally cold sky. Down below in the forests, there’s that splash of blue water, looking so pure. I could see this on a postcard, nice photo
