Description
This painting, as with all my other artwork on deviantART, was done as an art assignment for college. The only requirements we had for this painting were to use watercolor paint and to create an illustration involving an egg. After a lot of thought and discarded ideas, I decided to go with this composition. I used my suitemate Steve Limongelli as reference for the figure, an egg that I broke open just right, and a beach scene I found a picture of online.9" x 12"
30 hours working on composition including reference shots and using photoshop (why it took so long I don't know), 30 hours painting it
fall 2005

i love it, but i think the weak point of it is the beach,,,it doesnt look as good as the man breaking out of the egg, whether you meant for the beach to not look as impressive is another thing though, hehe
but i love it.

This is an interesting piece. A while back I wrote a children's story about a baby who came out of a dinosaur egg.

Kind of reminds me of that Dali piece "Geopoliticus child" or whatever. Really great use of the watercolours, by the way.

wow this is fabulous. Though if i may say something, the beach doesn't have that beachy feel..i'm talking about the sand....The sand seems like its just a smooth road....but doesnt have that "footprint in sands" feel. Do you know what i mean? Like his hands seem like it should be into the sand...same with the egg..and I think the head too ...
I dont mean to sound so critical...:\

I know why you would think this. However, the photo of a beach that I used for reference had sand that was this flat and smooth. The egg is sitting on top of wet, compressed sand that is near the ocean. As there are no people around, it's possible that there would be no footprints in the sand. As for his hands and head compressing into the sand a bit, you're probably right. If the figure is about the size of a turtle, it might be possible that his low weight wouldn't be enough to compress the compacted sand very much, but I'm not sure. But thanks for the criticisms and compliments!

You fucked up a little on the arm, and the idea is rather hackneyed. You paint pretty well, but the two previous points overwhelm the latter. Any reason you decided to make a full grown human crawling out of the egg instead of an infant?

egoodwinart In reply to itsallnoisetome [2005-11-22 08:49:49 +0000 UTC]
Ah, that's up to the viewer to decide. As for the arm, you'd be surprised to see how big his arm actually is in proportion to the rest of his body. I painted it from a reference photo of Steve that I took, and the painting is very accurate. But I can easily see why people would think that it's too big. Thanks for the criticisms.

very strange... i love it but its so weird... i dont know why its so weird... it just is.. probably the degree of un-naturalness to it. absolutly amazing idea though and pretty damn well executed! great work. congrats on the DD you definatly deserve it!

Despspite a few minor mishaps on the right arm, I must say this is an amazing piece. I'd love to work with watercolors eventually, but as of now, time is against me. 30 hours just seems like a mind boggling amount of time to spend on a piece but I assume I'll have to get used to assignments like that. Again, congratulations on a wonderful painting.

this looks amazing...it reminds me a lot of this story i read in grade 7...only the people turned out to be turtles...
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
egoodwinart In reply to hellstar [2005-11-22 08:47:05 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I was thinking of turtles hatching on a beach when I created this. Of course, turtles have to break out of their eggs and then crawl up out of the hole that they're buried in, but I was going for the same general idea of some creature that's hatching on the beach near water. I intended for there to be some kind of ambiguity about how and why the egg is just sitting there atop the sand and why it's a human coming out (full size or turtle size, there's no reference to tell you what size it is, which I like).

It's cool. It doesn't suit to me the all round shape of the egg. If its an oval shape would hav been better.

egoodwinart In reply to badr [2005-11-22 08:43:47 +0000 UTC]
I know what you mean. It actually was a real egg that I photographed for reference, broken and placed like this, and the perspective that the egg is seen at does make it appear to be round and not oval. Oh well.

Ha Ha, I know! I noticed this too a few nights ago when I was reminded by someone else's painting that bore a resemblance to Dali's work, and as I looked through them all I noticed this same painting and laughed at the similarities. I might have seen this painting before doing my painting, but if I had it would have years ago and was maybe just sitting there in my subconscious. Good eye!
