Description La Pucelle Tactics was a good game, right?

The characters were downright easy to get attached to, the story was entertaining, sad and funny, and the artwork was amazing. The gameplay was a bit simplistic when compared to SRPG games of this day and age of gaming, but fairly good and free spirited at that time.

These 3 red heads were from La Pucelle Tactics.
Croix the bad*** gunman, little Culotte the young yet mature minded choir boy, and of course, Prier, most stubborn, foul mouthed and aggressive of all the party members. Even the demons she would pound into the ground would question if she was truly human or not. = D

Do it. You get the Angel Shoes if you do, and those are awesome on Eclair, since she's already fast and they benefit her more than any other character. You can put them on Papillion, and she'll be the fastest character in the game, but thats only useful for clearing Dark World maps.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

elazuls-core In reply to Thesis-D [2008-05-13 04:23:42 +0000 UTC]

Ooooh, I do like me some more speed! = D That's a nice item to get, you can get use out of it throughout the whole game I bet.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Thesis-D In reply to elazuls-core [2008-05-13 06:00:19 +0000 UTC]

Definitely. Theres one map inparticular, where you have to clear it without killing any of the soldiers. It's the one where you try to save Angelique. If you kill any of them you get the bad ending for that stage, but lots of extra money if you don't kill any.

Putting the angel shoes in Papillion is ideal for this stage, since she can move many squares in a single turn, and she's too weak to kill any of the soldiers. It's also a good idea to put three more pairs of shoes on her to increase her movement and draw the enemies away from her with decoys like Monya Monya and low-level chocolats.

Dark Eclair is faster than regular Eclair, so with the angel shoes she can move a couple squares more than regular Eclair, I believe. I used to wonder whats the difference between the Eclairs.

Well, 'good' Eclair has a higher defense and INT, and Dark Eclair is faster and stronger, but as a lower defense. So the angel shoes are good for compensating regular Eclair's speed, and Dark Eclair gets an even more dramatic speed boost!

Definitely a good combo, since she's basically two characters in one.

It's tempting to put all the good/rare items on Prier just so she kicks more ass, but the game isn't as fun if you just use her to win.

I ended up having Culotte and sister Alouette as mage/healers by power leveling them at the cave of ordeals (Or whatever it's called in La Pucelle), and I think they pretty much outclass all the other melee style chara builds I was messing with, but they didn't have any kind of speed to them.
Prier was my powerhouse hitter, her attacks are so fun to watch. = D

Oh yah, I remember the map you're talking about, you've given me a good strategy for getting through that the next time I play. That map was kinda painful, I didn't know how to progress without breaking a few heads along the way. .w.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Thesis-D In reply to elazuls-core [2008-05-13 21:37:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Actually, Alouette is probably easier to and the best character to ubber up because she has the most well-rounded stats of any of the characters. She's virtually good in every stat and category. She can be your most powerful mage, healer, and fighter all in one.

I've found that to take full advantage of Alouette's stats, you need to give her items that level up every stat and bonus. There's not that many of them and they tend to be expensive. Holy Guards are a good choice, but so is the Goddess Ring, which you get by defeating the Giant Thing (which basically looks like a huge tree). If you fight it at it's full-strength only then do you get the Goddess Ring, and it's totally worth it, since it levels every stat, and the bonuses by 3! It's arguably the best item in the game, save for the Super Robo Suit you get from Bal in the Shrine of Darkness.

Also, it's a good idea to have her specialize in holy magic. It's the best magic in the game, because it doesn't do reduced damage to other element types (other than it's own). The spells usually do alot more damage as well, though they cost more SP to cast. It's also the coolest magic to watch, especially when you get up to Omega Saint and Poitreene herself attacks.

I don't know how hard you tried, but it's good to get Alouette using holy magic as early as you can, so she can build up her holy rating. The only way to do that effectively is to continue to combine holy rods and staffs. It takes many, many hours to do it, but I remember I had one staff that was INT 700 SP 700, and had a holy rating of 50+, and that was just one item contributing to the holy element and to her SP and INT. All the other three items were holy too, and it took a long time for me to get them in the shop. Having to enter and exit the shop menu just to get the exact thing you want can take hours in itself, but it's totally worth it when you can finally combine it all.

Although you have to be careful with that, since you could be cheating yourself. Sometimes if you try to combine two items that are already too powerful, it will allow you to do it, but the starting stats won't be what they should, they'll be slightly lower, and if you're anal like me, that's not good enough. I always made sure that all 5 categories were being increased (holy rating, INT, SP, INTx, SPx) Thankfully, you can preview what the starting stats will look like before you commit to the trade.

To get every stat on a rod or staff to go up, you usually have to have a really high level monster, which is a shame, because you have to give them away to get the item.

Anyways, I'm ranting, but my point is, Alouette is god-like when you ubber her up with holy magic. Buy her a God Staff (the most expensive item in the game that you can buy in a shop), a Holy Guard that's of the holy element, and fill the two remaining spots with additional combined holy rods, or one ubber holy rod you made, and the Goddess Ring.

By the time Alouette reaches Omega Saint, nothing will be able to stand up to her, and once she levels that spell up, she can take out entire maps on her own in a few minutes.

Nice! Thank you for the strategy! I wasn't sure about how to start out from the beginning of the game and build the charas up to be able to take on the big challenges later, but that there is some really good advice for building Alouette, just what I need.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Thesis-D In reply to elazuls-core [2008-05-13 22:36:07 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome...but I should be thanking you for talking your ear off. I hope my being long-winded about this isn't annoying you.

Also, don't forgot that when you are going to try and combine items, it's best to only try and combine two at a time. I know it may seem that more is better, but actually it's worse, because the more items you try to combine into one, the weaker that item will be starting off. So it's best just to work with two. Another thing that's important is to make sure that when you equip the monster with the items, that you equip the strongest/highest level one first, and then go down like that from strongest to weakest. It may seem petty, but it actually does make a difference in the final stats, because the game has a way of calculating the final stats based on the order the combined stats were received.

Also, try and combine items that are the same level, or at least really close to eachother. You'll get maximum results that way, and better starting stats on combined items. If you start with one item being level 10 for example, and the other one being level 17, you'll be cheating yourself during the merging. Like, for example, you 3 of the stats might go up combined, but you'll miss out on the other 2. Remember that when combining items only up to 5 areas can go up. If it's a staff or rod, then you only have to worry about INT, SP, and their respective bonuses, anyways. If you see that less than 5 areas are not being increased, then something is wrong, and it's not going to be a good merging. Also, make sure you have a high enough level monster for the trade. If it's level is too low the dealer may refuse you or the item may turn out weaker. As a rule of thumb, it's a good idea to have a monster whose level is higher than the combined level of what your items would be together, even though the item will start over at 0.

Your element rating is also more important than you might think because it determines several things. The omega level spells cannot be unlocked unless you have a high enough rating in that element. I'm pretty sure it's 50+ for holy in order to unlock Omega Saint. Also, the rating determines how much damage that element will do when you use it. It might also affect the range of your spells as well, and how much damage you'll take from opposing elements I'm not sure.

Finally, don't forget that your items will level up faster if you purify maps using the same element that your items are. Items that share the same element gain a bonus amount of experience from this, especially from Miracle Attacks. If you're trying to level up Alouette's holy items, try and set off Holy Miracle Attacks (Ragnarok). These also do more damage than the other elements. Holy Miracles are time consuming to pull off because they require a combination of the other elements, and if they're not there, you have to leave the map until they're available. If you don't already know, the best map to use to get easy miracle attacks is Hall of the Dead, I believe it's called. It's that huge stairway that you go through at the beginning of the game during the tutorial Alouette gives.

Wow, it gets complicated trying to rid the world of evil!
I never even tried to combine items very much, in my first play through. Much like in Disgaea 1 and 2 where they have the item world, I didn't have the patience for it. I'll have to give that a try tho, and your advice on miracle attacks too. =3 When I get playing again, I'll let you know what I'm up to in the game and maybe you can help tell me if I'm doing things right.
Your strategies are pretty self explanatory tho, so I should be okay.

Thesis-D In reply to elazuls-core [2008-05-14 02:05:25 +0000 UTC]

Well, I have the strategy guide, so that helps. If you ever want to know whether a weopon or item is worth investing the prica into, just ask me, and I'll tell you what weopons lie ahead in the higher rankings, so you might decide you want to wait until you increase your customer ranking and save up for the better stuff.

It's better to work with quality items and level those, since leveling up the weaker items at the beginning is a waste of time.

Don't forget to look at all the red event squares on the maps, too (excluding the entry and exist points), since viewing some of these events mean the difference between good and bad endings. Good endings mean more money and in some cases, bonus items not available anywhere else.

Yeah, because theres no 'harm' in that. I just think the whole thing is laughable because they attempted to cover up the catholic christian overtones by removing the crosses and changing some things around. But in truth, they did more than that, and it genuinely pisses me off, and not just because I'm a catholic.

For instance, look at Disgaea. That game is pretty much as is. They didn't have to edit much. Yet, it's a game about demons, in hell or in the 'netherworld', and they're killing and hurting people, and they have names for items like "lucifer" etc., and a pure angel becomes a fallen angel. They didn't remove or edit any of that because it was done in a cutesy-poo way, with chibis and loli.

La Pucelle got the axe because of the christian themes, but Disgaea got away with it. It's a double standard if I ever saw one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Thesis-D In reply to Artificer-Urza [2008-05-13 02:13:23 +0000 UTC]

No, not expected more, just expected nothing to happen and the game remain as it was in the Japanese release. There have been plenty games in the past that had religious overtones and they weren't edited because they just so happened to be pagan enough. La Pucelle is not pagan, however, save for a goddess in place of God and Calamity as a female version of Lucifer, I suppose.

Disgaea makes references to 666 and such and seems to glorify the evil, but does it in a cute way and it stays, while words like possession are removed from La Pucelle because the game actually takes the demonic themes seriously in the context that you are a demon hunter and you expel demons for a living because you're a nun or priest.

I just think what Mastiff did was a slight against Nippon Ichi's theme for the game because they tried to deemphasize those themes. They attempted to shy away from and water down something that didn't need to be watered down in the first place.

Did it make such a huge difference on the game itself? No, not really, but I'm a hardcore fan, and leave it to a fan to make a federal case out of it.

Finally got to see this, after wanting to see it for so long! Instant fav!

They're all very awesome. I like that you kept the crosses on them. In the U.S release the crosses and other religious symbolism (even some of the dialogue) was edited out, which I never really appreciated, and replaced with ambiguous symbols.

Mastiff actually had an interview about this trying to explain it away as "insignificant" and that they could have gotten in trouble with parents for allowing religion to be in a game. We can have killing and blood and demons, but not religion and smoking. LOL

They can't cover up the fact that this is basically roman catholicism and that these are nuns and priests, which they clearly state they are. Noir is basically the anti-christ, and the Dark World is actually Hell (in the original). Also, the "Divine Mother" was originally "The Virgin", perhaps a play on the Virgin Mary.

But no, mere crosses and smoking have to go.

I know! What's this country's problem with controlling foreign stuff, making it crappy with all the editing that they do, most of the time the editing is unneeded and pointless. Suckage. At least the game was domestically released tho. From the moment I first saw Prier in a crappy game mag, I said to myself that this game just HAS to be localized, or I will be sad.
