In the Japanese version, Vivian is a boy, but at the end she becomes a girl, or at least calls herself a girl, its like that in most versions minus the US one.

I loved Vivian as mario's partner in this game, she was my favorite girl partner. She was my second favorite under the one more character!! I really loved that crystal star mission, but it also scared me as a child.
