Description Scratchboard of a Lipizzaner stallion

8 1/2" x 11", this is done on Scratch Art scratchboad paper.. Entirely drawn with an X-acto knife tip (Size 11 if you're curious, I cycled through about 10 blades) My biggest annoyance with this piece is that the paper has a metallic sheen to it which it made it impossible to get a perfect photo! Some strokes at different angles are shining incredibly bright although in person they are just as fine as the ones beside them... If I had a scanner available, I'd try using it and see if things came out better.

Well over 30 hours put into this piece, I lost track. Definitely the most time I've ever spent on a drawing. x.x

This is really awesome. I have a few scratchboards in my gallery too, and they are definitely one of the hardest things to do!

This has turned out beautifully despite some small anatomical errors (the nostril and the pupil of the eye) these are easy enough to over look when you see how good the rest of it really is.

Ah, you noticed my trouble spot! XD

The nostril gave me such a headache. x.x I re-inked it and enlarged it a couple times, and still it's a bit tiny I think.. My reference picture had an entirely black nose (All shadow, no detail, you can see my first derpy nostril in this wip with reference - [link] ), so I had to guesstimate on that. I need to work more on understanding equine anatomy in the future so I don't end up so attached to refs.

Pupil was more of an artistic decision though. Originally there was no detail added, it was simply the white highlights on black. I was encouraged by my instructor to make it more exciting, and I actually liked the result of giving the horse a bright, kind of human-like pupil. Overall it gave the horse more feeling and intelligence, or at least that's what came to my mind when I compared pictures.

Ah I recognise the reference. It must be the fact it is a poster that you are using and can't make out the nostril. The image features in a book by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Horses and here the nostril came be made out. It is however good practice in this situation to use multiple references to know the detail in the shadows or as in this case too dark to make out. Nothing wrong with a love for references by the way.
I understand what you mean about the pupil.

That's an insane amount of detail, especially as the coat has its own design and pattern.
You should be very proud!

Ah ha, thank you! I'm probably the most meticulous, anal, detail-oriented person you'll ever meet when it comes to realistic pencil drawings and scratchboards. XD And yep, I am quite proud of this, it was time well spent!

I admire your patience. I think that is truly what makes great art (excuse the cheesiness, but it's honest)!

*nod* I think you're right about patience. Just imagine what the old masters had to go through to finish a single painting years ago, especially since there weren't art stores to provide them with tubes of paint in every hue in the rainbow. x.x

Thank you!

I actually do transfer a simple pencil outline before I start, so I don't mess up the placement of eyes/ears/prominent highlights. It's a huge help, not sure I could be as detailed without it! x.x

Wow! you can really the see the amount of detail and effort put into this I especially like the horse's fringe, and how it isn't completely straight but with natural kinks
Is scratchboard simply metal under a surface that you scratch off?

ElementsofMadeiness In reply to djemilahgordon [2012-06-03 18:03:51 +0000 UTC]

I love wild and kinky hair, so glad I'm not the only one! ^^

Scratchboard is actually a coating of clay on some surface, with black ink sprayed over it. So you create images by scratching off the black ink surface and revealing the light clay underneath. Cheap versions of this also include the metallic foil scratch-art kits that you see in the children's section in art stores.

This is actually a student grade of scratchboard- so it's black ink over clay, layered over a thin sheet of plastic. Most scratchboard is white/off-white clay, but for some reason this company thought it would be a brilliant idea to give the clay underneath a metallic sheen. In person it's beautiful to see, but it's incredibly hard to photograph because of the reflections.

XD it's much more interesting!
ah that sounds quite fun I might have to see if there are any I could look at when I next go to the art shop
Like you said, you may have to beg someone with a good scanner to scan it for you i'd like to see it in person though it sounds like quite a cool, if impractical, effect
