Description "See there, the innocent blood you have spilt on the steps of Notre Dame"

Speedpaint of the death of Quasimodo’s mother, from Disney’s HoND. This scene made such an impression on me when I was a kid. Gutwrenching sadness, I tell you. Then (some years later) I read the book; even more gutwrenching sadness. Then I read Les Miserables, and concluded that Victor Hugo basically dedicated his authourship to killing off my favourite characters.

Très méchant, monsieur Hugo. Vraiment très méchant.

Ahem. Another speedpaint, because that is what I have the time and patience to do these days. And drawing something is better than drawing nothing, right? But I'll try to upload something "serious" for Halloween. Something a bit more finished and a bit less sketchy. *crossing my fingers*

Instead of being Quasimodo’s mother, she could have been Esmeralda's.

Oh geez that poor woman, after trying to so hard to get both herself and her baby to safety. She even managed to make it to the door and start pounding it for help.

One of my favorite parts of the movie. Mostly because it's so tragic (in a Disney film) but that chase scene is so scary too the first time you watch.  Wonderful speedpaint!!

I wish I could remember my reaction to this scene watching it as a kid, but a few months ago, my husband and I watched it, and my heart was so wrenched from this scene.  And your portrayal is equally heart-wrenching.  Which is a good thing, actually

It's impacting.  Great job!

[Heavens, this is impressive! The sheer sorrow, the emotions! Beautiful artwork!]
[I agree about Victor Hugo, he is awesome but so much tragedy!]

[Frollo: "... ... ... ... ... That... that had, to be done... I am guiltless, she was a trespasser and a gypsy thief... and I am to enforce the law, is my duty." *explained the Minister in calm voice, but inwardly he was horrified by this sin he committed*]

[Frollo here was impressed by your painting! ]

I know what you mean about Victor Hugo. When I read Les Miserables a few years ago I was seriously crying during Fantine's story. As tragic as his stuff is, however, I still find it all so beautiful. Heck, Fantine, to me, ranks up there with one of the most tragically beautiful characters ever written. He tackled many serious issues in his works and his characterization is brilliant. I can't remember another author that truly takes the time to lay out every characters' facets the way he did.

Like you, I love both versions of HoND. They're both good works that stand on their own and that I enjoy and love for different reasons. Every time I hear someone say how fans of the book can't like the Disney movie I'm just like, "Psh. Please."

Anyway, all this to say you did an amazing job with this! It captures the surprise and the sadness of the moment so well.

Thank you so much for your insightful comment! Yes, Hugo's characters are indeed tragically beautiful. And, sadly, so many of the problems he addressed are still relevant. There are many Fantines walking the streets even today, just to take an example.

Don't look down on something you did quicker than other pictures. It usually holds on to the passion much better than something that has been detailed to death. This one really shows emotion, spur of the moment idea I love.
