Description
"See there, the innocent blood you have spilt on the steps of Notre Dame"Speedpaint of the death of Quasimodo’s mother, from Disney’s HoND. This scene made such an impression on me when I was a kid. Gutwrenching sadness, I tell you. Then (some years later) I read the book; even more gutwrenching sadness. Then I read Les Miserables, and concluded that Victor Hugo basically dedicated his authourship to killing off my favourite characters.
Très méchant, monsieur Hugo. Vraiment très méchant.
Ahem. Another speedpaint, because that is what I have the time and patience to do these days. And drawing something is better than drawing nothing, right?

I actually watched HoND up to three times a day when I was little but never really got it.
Until now that I'm 18 and I watched it again... gosh is it even for kids? xD

Hehe, you're right! I believe that the reason kids are allowed to see it is exactly what you said; they don't get it. The really dark, mature themes just go over their heads.

This is amazing! The touch of blood that wasn't present in the movie is so bone chilling! Poor Quasi's mom, say how do you feel about the book vs the movie? I enjoy both the darkness of each version. Book:Stabbing, murder, attempted rape, hangings Movie:Hints of lust, Genocide, Paris burning to the ground basically just frollo. XD Anyway Great job! How come you didn't draw the church Stairs? She looks like she's laying in snow.

Thanks a bunch for commenting! Wow, it's been so long since I read the book - I should probably read it again and take notes before answering! But here goes: I, too, enjoyed both versions. I think Disney did a good job preserving the dark mood and overall adult themes of the book, considering how it's marketed as a kid's movie. Granted, they changed much of the storyline, but that's not really a surprise; that's what Disney does with all the"Classics". The book has a much more tragic ending, of course. The film finished on a feelgood-note whereas the book left me "ohgodWHY!".
Oh, and I actually did draw the church stairs, but pretty much painted over the outlines. In the movie, she is laying in the snow, but you still see the stairs, so I tried to get them back in there, but it didn't look right. At which point i just said "nevermind". Lazy me speedpainting.

Yes me too! I agree they did change the story line but I enjoy both. I agree the book leaves me like that too. The Disney one made me smile. Oh, I see. Well, I love the speed painting very original and dark!

Thank you so very much. Of course, in the movie (being a kid's movie and all) thay had to cencor such effects. but I don't have to. I don't do gore just for the sake of gore, but here, it serves a purpuse.

I remember telling my friend who was a huge HoND fanatic and Frollo-lover about Frollo kicking that woman in the face to take the bundle from her. She was actually apalled saying Disney wouldn't do such a thing. All I thought was, sister, what drugs are YOU on??? She finally got her head out of her bum and paid close attention when next she saw the movie. Guess who was apologizing to me

Elf-in-mirror In reply to BadCowboy69 [2013-10-14 23:01:28 +0000 UTC]
Haha! I suppose your friend "knew" Frollo from the book? Disney warped his character quite a bit. Not that he was Mr. Nice Guy in the book, but hey, at least he didn't kill Quasi's mom!

Naw, she was just an idjet that thinks Disney spews out puppies and sunshine and wouldn't dare have someone stoop to kicking a woman in the face thus killing her. *rolls eyes* Yeah, same company that tossed another lion to his doom via his own brother and another that shot Bambi's mother. Naw, of course Dismal wouldn't dare kill someone in cold blood like that XD

Thank you so much! Yeah, it's probably my favourite opening too - although the Tarzan opening is wonderful too, IMO. Where, again, come to think of it, they insist on killing of some of the most interesting characters in the first scenes...!

Thanks for noticing! I did add some bloodstains that are not there in the movie (albeit in the lyrics). But the scene is, nonetheless, really dark - and not something you'd expect in a normal Disney movie.

First of all: Do you read my mind?
This is wonderful and expressive I love the colors and yes I love this movie went to the cinema watch it when I was a kid and this scene didn't get off my mind, and yes I red HoND and Les Mis and Victor Hugo is one of my favourite writers although he makes me cry like a child someone stole a doll. Oh well. Just to say this is awesome, and that I feel being able to find your drawings in my inbox is always a magnificent gift. Thank you so much for drawing this and for... basically for drawing everything you draw.

Oh, I've been wanting to read that book for ages! I've been putting it off beacuse I had this crazy idea that I wanted to read the original version. Which will never happen, of course, since my French is too rusty and over-all pathetic
From your comment I take it you reccomend it?

Yes I do, it's not as epic as Les Mis or Notre Dame but it's beautiful and definitely worth reading After all it's Hugo... I'm reading it in English, there's no translation in Portuguese yet... tried in French first too but after the first pages I thought my brain would blow up, my French is very basic...
