Upon first meeting Rye, why! You will find them quite unique! Twirling, shaking their tail feathers, twisting to look at you upside down, Rye has no fears of appearing odd. In fact! They like it! And why is that? Well, you see, odd people disturb others, don't they? Yes! Exactly! And this tickles the murkrow! Oh, how they will invade your bubble, inquire strange things, poke and prod! In this way, Rye is very playful and loves to get a rise out of just about anyone~
To those Rye is close to, they will find a very loyal, loving, and protective bird. Observant, Rye knows what those around them like, and will go out of their way to make a gift, plan a trip, or cook a specific dish. Their trust is hard to earn, but once they feel you will not betray them, Rye will listen to whatever little thing you love to talk about, or whatever troubles you possess. At any turn they will defend you. They may even stop acting impenetrable and divulge in their own weaknesses. Their attentiveness extends to clients, and along with their smooth words, they help mourners accept and overcome their unfortunate situation.
However, Rye is extraordinarily paranoid, something that comes from low points in their life and left lasting trauma. Rye is fond of being in control. They like to know everything, command everything. Their ears are always open to gossip and tidbits, to cracks and creaks. Their eyes are always observing, noting little details in their surroundings. So paranoid are they that even sleep comes with difficultly. Along side needing control to feel secure, a rather nasty murkrow trait they inherited is their possessiveness. They are painfully bad at sharing anything they like, and will consider anything their possession, even people. They are not above manipulating behaviors.
History:
Rye began their life in quite an average way. Their mother was a Hoothoot embalmer, while their father was a Honchkrow funeral director. Discussions of death and prone lifeless bodies were not unusual about their small home, which shared space with their practice. While death was their parents' passion, and Rye learned the practice through their instruction, they found themself drawn to the arts. A natural with dexterous fingers, Rye doodled through their school notes, slathered themself in paint as they brought a ghoulish portrait to life, and eventually moved onto sculpture. Known as a morbid oddball through their school years, their friends were often Dungeons & Dragonites nerds who could appreciate someone of their imaginative prowess, or souls who lined their eyes in dark makeup and rocked the grunge scene.
Life was good, other than their mother's early demise. Rye was informed it was a health complication in relation to formaldehyde, and being at the tender age of 12 did not ask much more than that. The death was shocking, but not long lasting as her Drifloon spirit soon returned to haunt their family for years to come. What was lasting was their first high school relationship. Jason the Duskull. The school bad boy. He was a senior and had been held back a year, but his advanced age, access to drugs, and general attitude enraptured the school's young population! Smitten and naive, the then Sophomore Rye caught Jason's eye and they started a toxic relationship. A long story short, after a few months and one bad evening, Jason was out of Rye's life and in his wake came the distrust and paranoid that would only exacerbate in the murkrow.
Upon graduation, Rye did not attend college nor take up the family business. Instead, they attempted to start a sculpture business of their own. Displaying their work in galleries around town and in the new online world, they began to carve out a small customer base while living out of their parent's home. When business was slow, however, they would resort to learning the funeral trade. By the time they were twenty three, Rye had some success in keeping regular business flowing. They had befriended a client who owned a jewelry chain, a rather obtuse donphan woman, and little did Rye know that this friendship would lead to another dip in the rollercoaster known as life. Ever fond of shimmering things, and perhaps too sticky fingered for their own good, at the age of twenty five Rye had been caught. They had been snagging a few precious gems here and there and maybe a touch too often. Foolishly so, they were unaware of the surveillance cameras newly installed which caught them in the act red-handed.
Dropping their life, Rye became a fugitive with a warrant out for their arrest. Charged with grand larceny, Rye was all too aware of the jail time that would entail, and eventually came to change their name and hide away on a set of small island known as Raccolto. It was here they started a funeral service and found a Tentacool man that tickled them just so! Caring, thoughtful, amusing, and shiny, oh so shiny, Rye feel in love and wed the man. This marriage was peaceful and led to the birth of their children.
Ah! But life! How it is as temperamental as the sea! One incident after another, Rye was eventually roped into the affairs of a murkrow mafia, which led to tensions in their marriage, and concerns for their young family. Coming to a mutual decision, Rye and Tomei packed up their valuables, gathered their kids, sold their land, and set out to find a home away from the dangers that haunted their old abode. They had done plenty of searching, contacting realtors in mainland cities, in other regions, and finally in Harthaven. It was here they found the perfect plot of land, their chance at a clean slate, the opportunity to raise their family in safely.
Job: Business Owner
Business Name: Good Mourning: Cemetery and Funeral Services
Business Type: Trade
Stock Type:
Funerary Services
Embalmings / Cremations / Burials
Coffins / Urns / Headstones
Talents:
- Rye is adept at sculpting and accepts commissions from their customers to make intricate headstones.
- Growing up, they took formal dance classes. While Rye prefers contemporary dance, they are good at other styles.
- Despite having no hair and always wearing a mask, Rye is good at hair and makeup...at least on still individuals.
Funfacts:
- Rye is not their real name.
- Insomnia plagues Rye. Already a very paranoid individual, their lack of sleep exacerbates their suspicions. They tend to avoid sleep as long as possible, though eventually they have to cave. When this happens, they can sleep many hours and they sleep solidly. The fact that they aren't a light sleep makes them even more paranoid to sleep.
- Rye has a distrust of tall strong individuals.
- Their trust is very hard to earn, and should that trust ever be betrayed, you had better run.
- During cool mornings, Rye likes to practice dancing. Since having children, they often like to join Rye after breakfast if they don't have school.
- All things shiny appeal to Rye! A discarded gum wrapper, a speck of glitter, that polished spoon you're eating with. Rye loves it all! Which also means, Rye may very well take it. After all, all shiny things are really their's and you have just been borrowing them.
- The above trait has passed onto their murkrow children, who can be found diving into trash cans to get something shimmery.
- Rye does not know how to swim and is terrified of most water.
- Unknown to many, only Ingrid and Edgar are descendants of Rye and Tomei. Ichabod and Imelda carry other origins.
- Fond of citrus flavors and scents, specifically oranges.
- If one could manage to drag Rye to a psychologist, they may be diagnosed with PTSD and ASPD. Though their ASPD symptoms seem to improve as they age.
- Psycho Shift: Rye's Psycho Shift is a double edged blade. While it can relieve them of status effects like poison, they still must shift the pain onto another living creature.
- Night Shade: Usually an involuntary action to extreme distress. Nothing physical happens, but those affected by Night Shade begin seeing shadowy shapes of their deepest fears. They can hear, feel, see, taste, and smell these figures, though no one else can see or experience what they are feeling. It's all in their head.
