They stood pressed together in the old ruins and she closed her eyes listening to the shrieking of demons as they poured out from the rift.
Keeland shifted in front of her, moving closer and she held her breath focusing all her willpower on not wrapping her arms around the small elf.
Keeland’s scent filled her senses as a tendril of wind brushed past them. This cannot happen. She remembered the words as if she had spoken them only moments earlier.
Why not? Keeland’s voice echoed in her mind. Because you’re the inquisitor and...a woman. But now here they stood hiding in an old building so worn by wind and weather
she feared it might collapse on top of them any minute, but rotting tree and collapsed stone walls was the last thing she could think of.
A faint rustling sound caught her attention. The demons were drawing nearer. How many were they? She felt the sensation of the battle tug at her stomach. The rifts could spawn an
endless stream of demons unless someone stopped it. She looked down at Keeland, her back molded into Cassandra’s chest. There was only one person who could close the rifts.
The Inquisitor.

The dalish elf who had accidentally stumbled upon the anchor. Accidentally? She furrowed her brow. Or was it the will of Andraste? If not then why had the elf been given this remarkable
gift? The ability to close the rifts. It had not been blood magic as she had first suspected, but sheer...luck? She did not always understand the Maker’s will, but she understood one thing
-her faith. She believed in the Maker and her belief made her stronger, better. Strong enough for them to close this rift on their own? Could she protect the Inquisitor long enough for
Keeland to close the rift? Could she risk it? If it mean the inquisition lost their leader...it could not happen. They would have to wait it out.
The glow of magic caught her attention and she grabbed the inquisitor by the arm. “Don’t,” she leaned her head closer and hissed.
“Why not?” Keeland frowned.
“There’s too many of them.”
“It’s a rift, no?” Keeland quirked her eyebrow.
“Yes, but we don’t know how many demons it has spawned.”
“I can find out.” The elf hissed through her teeth.
“You’re a mage.” She looked down at the leather outfit the elf wore covering far too little of her delicate skin than what Cassandra approved of. “You’re obviously not equipped for a brawl.”
“Well that’ why I’ve got you, isn’t it?” A smile tugged at the corner of Keeland’s mouth as she tilted her head backwards exposing the skin of her neck, the silky, smooth look of it tempting
and inviting to her hungry lips.
“Oh, so that’s all I am to you? A meat shield on the battlefield.” She shot back as quietly as she could.
“Only because you rejected my other offer,” Keeland said the lilt in her voice sultry and challenging.
“I…” She began, her eyes transfixed by the plump lips. This mustn't happen. She bit her lip. Keeland’s face was close, too close. It was the only thing she could focus on.
“How long are we going to do this?” The elf asked. “You pretending you don’t want me and me pretending I don’t see the way you look at me.”
I don’t look at you. She protested silently. You do, you’re just too stubborn to admit it. Stubborn old Cassandra Pentaghast. A small voice at the back of her head taunted her.
“Don’t get any ideas elf” she snarled defiantly. “Just because we’re standing like this. It’s just because we’re hiding.”
“Hiding?” Keeland turned her head closer bringing her lips so close to hers one could barely fit a thread of silk between their lips. “Then why are you still not moving away?” The elf’s lips brushed
against hers as she whispered the last words sending a tingling sensation down her spine. Her mind reeled desperately looking for an answer before her mouth would betray her. Because...
because I...because we...because you…
“Because I don’t want to.”
