Oh, look! A new issue of Zirca! Fumbles for his credit chip to buy a copy...
Rue pretty much steals the whole scene here... But I absolutely appreciate all the work you did to come with all those fun titles for the various stories featured in this issue!
Had a good laugh at the "Top 100 salarian baby names" and I'd love reading Kasumi's tips about dressing with style!

Haha! Hope you found those credits!
I'm so glad you got the Kasumi reference. LOL
Was hoping that one wasn't too obscure.
It's ALWAYS the coming up with articles that take the longest time.

Ops, looks like the credit chip was left in the pockets of a different pair of trousers... Might just submit a subscription request through the Extranet to solve the problem!
Well, I tend to like "obscure" references, but I'm pretty sure most ME fans will figure out the Kasumi reference. And it just occurred to me that the next time I'm rendering something in Cycles I might use the time to think about some clever article titles... Not that Dragon Age related renders make much use of those, but you never know when some good titles might come in handy, lol.

Hey, they might have a newspaper called "Wonders of Thedas" featuring cool articles about the different heroes. Totally believable!
Does your renders take a long time in Blender? Have you tried the tricks to speed it up? This one took...maybe 6 mins at a 3000x3000. Granted that was a bit of an overkill on res, but I wanted it big so I could rescale without compromising the quality.

Isn't "Wonders of Thedas" also the name of a shop in DAO? Regardless, your idea sounds absolutely believable!
Unless you want to expand on the idea at your own end, I might consider working on a concept based on your suggestion.
And yeah, my renders take a pretty long time in Blender Cycles, compared to your 6 minutes. If there's any further tricks to speed up rendering time that you can recommend and that I haven't already implemented, then I'm more than happy to give those a try. To give you an idea, this scene here was rendered @ 2560x1920 using about 2000 samples and took around 3,5 hours to render (everything in the scene is a model, I did not use a background picture). The hardware is most likely not the culprit (got pretty high end CPU and GPU), so I "blame" some computationally heavy shaders (the skin shader uses SSS which tends to increase rendering time as far as I can tell). I'm inclined to believe there's not much else I can do to shorten render time (unless I switch to less computationally heavy shaders), but I'm open to suggestions.

Go for it! Thedas needs a good magazine as well.
Oh wow...that's A LOT of samples. I rarely use more than 800. This one is 500. You usually can't tell the difference between 2000 and say 1000. Also check your light bounces. You honestly don't need them set to the default which is max: 12 and min: 3. Set them to something like max: 4 or slightly higher if you wish, but keep min: 0. All of my uses 4 and 0.
Under the tab where you have colour management there should be a section called simplify. Check that and set AO bounces to 2 on both the AO values. Some people state up to a third of their render time cut. Mine is usually cut by a few mins.
I have all these settings (and obviously render using gpu) and denoising. Build a really heavy scene with lots of sss and other shader plus a lot of geometry (faces) in it. With these settings it took only 17 mins to render at 1920*1080.

Hey, thank you very much for the additional tips about improving render speed in Cycles! I was already using low numbers for the light bounces, but I was not using the Simplify feature to set the AO values nor the Denoiser. That's because both features have been introduced with Blender 2.79 (at least I think so) and I was still using 2.78 (because I was too lazy to upgrade... Yeah, I'm lazy like that!
). Having installed 2.79 I've just run a small test and with the Simplify feature on I've cut down the render time (2880*2160 @ 2000 samples) from 4+ hours to slightly more than 1 hour and finally improved it to just 33 minutes after I remembered to set the tile size to something my GPU likes (256*256 rather than the default). I'll probably use less samples (I generally stay between 1000 and 2000), but for the sake of the test I was curious to see what was the difference when keeping the samples to 2000.
Let's see if I can come up with some interesting scene to render now...

Sweet! Yeah it does quite the difference for big renders to change the AO. I have my tiles set to 120/67. But I'm gonna try yours and see if I can get mine down a bit more. Was trying to render volume scatter the other day and it would take me nearly 3 hours för just 1000 samples. Eeeeeeeek!!!

Berserker79 In reply to elmjuniper [2018-04-20 21:33:26 +0000 UTC]
Apparently a larger tile size works best to improve speed when rendering using GPU, w hile a smaller tile size is faster if rendering using your CPU. Also, I seem to remember that as a general rule of thumb using numbers that are a power of 8 for the tile size seems to make Cycles happier, but admittedly I've never tested this. And wow, that's a pretty large increase of rendering time due to volume scatter! But I bet the final result would look pretty much amazing (so maybe from that perspective 3 hours for 1000 samples are not that much after all...
).

Lol but THREE hours! Ok, maybe I'll put it on over night when I don't need the computer for other stuff as well. It's odd tho, because I did render an environment render with volume scatter and it didn't take that long. Granted not as many samples because the scene was a day scene so had better lights and needed less denoising...and thanks for the advice on the tiles! Actually didn't know that.

Yeah, 3 hours is a lot of time when you know a regular render can take much less. Guess that I got too used to my renders taking too long if I'm ok with the idea of keeping my computer busy rendering for 3 hours. Things will undoubtedly change soon, now that your help allowed me to shorten my render time to 30-35 minutes!
Anyway, rendering while you're doing other stuff away from your computer is a good plan, I used to do that regularly. The first Cycles render I ever did used 5000 (!) samples and I went out for dinner+cinema with my friends while the computer did all the work (ofc, all those samples were unnecessary, but I didn't know back then!
). Regarding tiles, I've read this article reporting that the CPU can work on multiple tiles, so a small size is better, while the GPU works on a single tile, so a large one is better (and then it's a matter of finding what size fits best your setup).
