Description This is a DVD case designed in Illustrator CS4. I'm working on my typography.

The back of the case reads:

The Bible holds the answers to life’s greatest questions. Your view of the Bible is the most important thing about you, as it determines your relationship to God. The Bible is God’s Word written, in essence God’s divine autobiography. The entire book is a revelation of God – from God, centered on Jesus Christ, inspired by the Holy Spirit. God is revealing Himself to us through His Word.

Any ideas, suggestions on how to make the typography better?

I don't see any point to argue or get upset. I enjoy talking to people.

I agree. Some translations are totally messed up because people have muddled them. But there are some translations that are still good. Here and there artifacts are discovered (The Dead Sea Scrolls for example) which are not the original manuscripts, but they are old enough to show that the scriptures have not changed over the years.

Well, here's the thing. I believe that when we die we enter eternity, either Heaven or Hell. You believe in reincarnation. One of us is wrong.

It's rare to find X3

The most important thing about scripture really is the intention :3

Hee hee X3 Depends. Quantum physics says we created our own reality. So, it could be... That everyone is right. Whatever they believe is correct, I have my reincarnation, you get to go to heaven, everyone gets to be happy...
But Ya know. Least if I'm wrong, I only go to the first circle, virtuous Pagans Not so bad

Right. The intention of scripture is to show people that they need Jesus.

That's so silly. If I'm right and I believe that you are going to hell for rejecting Jesus...and you are right and you believe you will be reincarnated...that means you are going to be in 2 places at the same time. That doesn't make any sense.

That quantum physics idea does not pan out if you really think about it. Lets say that I believe I can walk on water, that the ocean is a surface I can walk on by foot for miles. Or lets say that I believe red driving lights mean "go" and green lights mean "stop". That is absurd and just wouldn't work. I can't make my own reality. Reality is what it is.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. May I ask why?

Icharos In reply to Emberblue [2012-02-24 17:19:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, I like how you combined technical/blueprint-style with art deco/classical elements. I think in this way you could maybe indeed judge the book by it's cover: Old, ornamented and symbolic (love the three circles!) Message in a reduced, almost technophilic way. The quite monochrome color-setting reinforces this in my opinion very well.
Or did you mean why I'm not sure if to support the slogan?

Emberblue In reply to Icharos [2012-02-24 17:49:23 +0000 UTC]

To be honest I meant "why" for both the artwork and the slogan, I was just curious which way you would answer it.

I do appreciate your comments. You seem to have picked up on everything that I was thinking when designing this. I'm happy to see that you recognized the 3 circles. They were subtle and intentional - I did not know if anyone would notice them. In your opinion, what do the 3 circles mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Icharos In reply to Emberblue [2012-02-25 09:21:26 +0000 UTC]

I chose this type of answer because discussing religiosity is always tricky, especially on the internet and not im my native language, but if you wish to I can elaborate on this topic, too?

The 3 circles are to me foremost of course a symbol for the trinity of god and the way how they frame the letters emphasize the idea of a transcendental god. More so, because they are clean an technically, the circles can be a symbol of perfection (of making if you want), both in their own shape as well as in the arrangement in a equilateral triangle. (By the way, is their a symbol which unites trinity and infinity? Would be cool, too.)

I have to say, for me not being an artist, it is pretty interesting to try to understand why I like a special work. Thanks for that opportunity on analysing.

You did well describing this in English. Actually, I think you got more insight out of my design than I had in mind when I made it. I really like your insight.

I really appreciate you spending the time to tell me what you think. God bless you.

I haven't taken typography myself, but the general rule I hear from my classmates who've taken it is less is more. I could four fonts, five if you include the word DVD. Maybe change one font so it matches another. I don't know if the curvy font matches up with the others. I like your graphics over "Why" and "Important." I wonder if you even need the word DVD at the top? Though it is nice to get a little bit more orange to tie it in there, it puts a lot of emphasis on that little logo, when you probably want the emphasis on the DVD's title.

Emberblue In reply to joshthecartoonguy [2012-02-24 17:03:25 +0000 UTC]

I didn't even think about that! I totally forgot about limiting the number of fonts. My original intention was to have each word a different font, but I ended up changing it. And you are right, the orange DVD logo does stand out too much. I could change it to dark grey. Thanks so much for your input!!!

It's important because people will kill each other over who's God's favorite! Buuut anyway, I think the word "Bible" might look better if it was angled the same as the pages of the book. The lines of the type wouldnt clash with the lines around it, and it would stand out from the rest of the text more. Not sure though.

Emberblue In reply to zeratanus [2012-02-24 17:01:16 +0000 UTC]

Very good point. I thought about that and decided against it. But since you mentioned it maybe I should give it a try and see how it looks. I wasn't sure if having only 1 word that was distorted instead of totally straight would look out of place. But you are right, it kind of clashes with the angled edges of the book. Thanks for the suggestion!

zeratanus In reply to Emberblue [2012-02-24 17:52:46 +0000 UTC]

Guess that comment was a tad more uh... offensive that I intended to make it lol. Sorry about that. Anyway, yeah, it will definitely look out of place, but sometimes that's good (draws the eye) and sometimes its bad (clashes with everything), so without trying it myself I can't tell which it'll be.

zeratanus In reply to joshthecartoonguy [2012-02-24 17:39:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes I've read it. No my statement is not bigoted or ignorant. Heck, just in the Old Testament there's plenty of evidence of this. But it was just my little joke. Sorry you got mad, bro.

joshthecartoonguy In reply to zeratanus [2012-02-24 17:55:30 +0000 UTC]

Okay, here's a hypothetical for you. Let's say some right-winger pulls a few quotes from the Koran out of context, and with no real knowledge of the Koran or the original story, claims that these quotes prove that all of Islam is an evil, violent religion? Would you say that person is being Islamophobic? Could we at least agree that an argument which paints with a broad brush all of Islam as violent ignores the many followers of Islam who are peaceful and don't believe in blowing up buildings? That's the way your comment came across to me, but directed towards Christianity, rather than Islam.

If there's a passage of the Koran which seems violent or nasty, who is the best person to explain it? A Muslim-hater who doesn't know much about the Koran or the context of the stories, or someone who is a Muslim with faith in the Koran, who has spent a great deal of time studying the context of the stories, and believes that those apparently violent passages should not be used to justify terrible actions? I think the latter. Why shouldn't that hold true for the Bible as well?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zeratanus In reply to joshthecartoonguy [2012-02-24 18:29:26 +0000 UTC]

Because you mad bro.

I didn't quote anything out of context. I didn't claim Christianity was an evil, violent religion. You're overreacting to what you're assuming I meant.

I'm just happy we can have this kind of discussion and it not end in me getting stoned to death. Another joke!

I'm not going to spam this deviation anymore with this conversation. if you want to respond feel free but arguing on someone else's art is not the place for this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

joshthecartoonguy In reply to zeratanus [2012-02-24 18:56:35 +0000 UTC]

That's all right. I don't care to have a long debate on the subject. You make fun of me for getting mad, but who's the one who apparently can't look at a design for a church DVD case without instantly spouting off a negative comment? Maybe you mad, bro. I'll take you at your word that you don't think Christianity is a violent religion, but that's how I took your comment based on how it was worded.

Whoa whoa , Actually that was a pretty accurate statement , if you look at how people have killed in the name of 'god' so don't be so quick to judge just yet. Not to mention I'm sure it was just a harmless comment .

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

joshthecartoonguy In reply to ArtisticAxis [2012-02-24 17:50:43 +0000 UTC]

If someone made the same comment about Islam, I think that person would be called an islamophobe. Now, I don't want to call accuse anyone of that, but I think it's okay to call people out on simplistic, inappropriate comments. You think that comments is appropriate? Tell you what, why don't we pretend it's that same comment, but just change one thing: who it's directed at? What if someone said something similar about, say, Native American religion, that it makes all it's practitioners violent savages? Would you say that person is just raising a valid point, or would you say that's a bigoted dismissal? I'm not interested in getting into a long debate on the subject. I just thought what the person said was inappropriate, and I thought someone should call her out on it.
