To celebrate the upcoming release of Disney's live action feature Maleficent later this year (to which I am excited about beyond all reasoning
), I thought I would try my hand at a bit of "realistic" digital rendering. 
This is a first for me; normally when I attempt something life-like I turn towards using traditional mediums like pencils, charcoal, or paint if I'm feeling confident.

You did an amazing job with the leathery texture on her headwear! I really enjoyed Maleficent, especially the twist with the kiss. (Vague spoilers ahead for any lurkers who haven't watched the movie yet!)
I really appreciated how they treated platonic love as being just as valid and powerful as romantic love. I think too many stories overemphasize romantic love as the be-all-and-end-all that people need to save them from their woes, and I feel that having Prince Philip kiss her eagerly would have been both gross on his part (I mean, she's unconscious!) and unrealistic, since they'd met too recently for a powerful bond to form. I also liked how reluctant he was to kiss her when she was out cold and couldn't consent.

I agree with you completely. 
But yes, there are still a lot of films that run with the idea that falling in love romantically is the one thing that characters need to "live happily ever after." As long as it gets Disney the big bucks they'll keep telling that story, too.

Hopefully the day will come when more healthy, realistic depictions of love and what it takes to be happy are the norm in media that influences young minds. In the meantime, I guess we'll have to cherish the good examples we have, and maybe create some ourselves.
