Description As promised

Here is my very first watercolour tutorial that you've requested me.

and something I would like to say before you start

Make sure you have some tissue papers while you're working, This will helped you control the water flow, cleaning your brushes, etc.

and don't use only one water container, let's find 2-3 of them

one is for washing your brushes and one for mixed with paints.

If you use only 1 water container, the water will become muddy and give you some horrible dirty effects, ruin your precious work for all time.

And use the best quality brush you can afford.

I can not color very well. I try to use a computer program called Gimp to color my inked and finished sketches. It has worked alright, but I just don't have the vibrant color you have.

220gsm paper is better than paper I used in this tutorial [mine is 190gsm]

I paint mainly with oils , and spent alot of money on the brushes, i want to do watercolours now because me and oil painting are not freinds any more
do i have to buy new paint brushes or can i use the watercolour ones ?
Oil brushes are more hard and springy ,they dont bend at all when you ar epressing into the canvas or paper, is this okay ?

emperpep In reply to Aicent [2011-02-15 06:31:34 +0000 UTC]

Oil brush is too hard for watercolor painting, They will damage the paper surface.
I recommend you to buy a watercolor brush.

What brand of watercolor do you suggests? Is pental good?

I read some of the comments saying that watercolor pencil work to. I 've tried it before, and it ended up by a hole in my drawing paper. The paper is from sketch book paper. not printing paper.
Would you mind helping me out?

NFG24 In reply to splendidangel [2011-02-11 07:07:26 +0000 UTC]

You absolutely need to get watercolor paper for watercolors.

See, sketching paper has a 50lb weight. It most definitely isn't thick enough to hold any amount of water. It's basically useful for pencils only.

Then there's drawing papers which range from 60-90lbs. They're generally used for fine-detail drawing or charcoal drawings [if the paper has texture to it]. They're a bit thicker than sketching paper, so if you wanted to do a commission for someone or wanted to frame it for a friend...I'd bump up to these.

Watercolor paper is much much thicker/heavier though, at about a 110-140lb weight. Go to your nearest art store and just feel the papers. As the lbs go up, the paper gets thicker; and thus, the ability for the paper to retain water also goes way up. There's really no other paper you can use for paints of any kind except watercolor paper.

As for watercolor brands...until you're experienced, I'd practice with whatever is cheapest. I bought a pack of assorted watercolor paints by Reeves for like $10, if that:

Until you have a reasonable level of skill with the medium, don't sweat not buying the individual tubes. There's an interesting learning curve with watercolors, so it'd be best to start with the basics and work up. It also works out into a nice way to "treat" yourself for all of the hard work and practice you do to go out and buy new art supplies. Keeps the process going smoother for me. ;]
