Description
After the last few projects, my tool boxes looked like a war zone lol. so i decided it would be good to reorganize and clean up before my next project. some people got a real kick outta seeing my tools in a past tutorial, so i thought i would show you the contents of my hobby tool boxes. this is in no way all my tools but basically everything i use on a day to day basis for my projects.I will be describing from top to bottom, from left to right.
The "Paint" Tool box:
Tool box:a large tool box, this one houses all the paints and painting tools i use for my models and dioramas.
Trash can: its a good idea to keep a trash can near your work space, i use an old coffee can.
Disposable gloves: its a good idea to have a box of these on hand. i use these mostly when spraying and working with pastels(the dust gets everywhere)
Pastel set, pastel brushes, and pastel tray: I use pastels for weathering. i just buy regular artist soft pastels. i use some #2 brushes to apply and have a some paint cups as the containers for the pastel dust
Thinner, water, and washes: i have big containers of thinner, but in my tool box i like to keep small amounts on hand. i make washes in labeled old baby food jars
Art oil set: just a cheap set of artist oil paints, great for washes and staining effects
artist Acrylic paints: i have two cheap sets, and some academy acrylics colors tubes. i use these a lot when it comes time to paint buildings and diroamama bases. they make great washes/filters as well
Foam, alligator clips: i use the cheap florist foam and sticks with alligator clips as part holders. great way to paint parts and have them dry hands free
Small bricks of foam and pins, candle: these are what i use to pin up small parts and figurine pieces. i heat up a pin and met it into the part. that way the part or figurine can dry hands free
Q-tips: these come in handy! not only do they clean up messes and mistakes, but help out when wiping away washes/filters
Spare model car for paint tests: this is the best $10 modeling investment i have made. before i paint anything i test out the paint and other techniques on a cheap car model. when starting a new project, i just prime it again and start over. a great way to practice before you try it on a "real"project. Practice makes perfect!
Model masters Enamels: i use enamels alot of the time, and prefer the model masters when i do. they cover great and have tons of great colors in there line.
Tamiya acrylics: i have a few of there acrylics paints, i have not really used them too much yet. i can say that the flesh color is great tho!
Cheap Enamels: i have tons of theses small testors Enamels. they are pretty cheap and can be of shoty quality, but people always give me the sets as gifts(gee thanks) they do come in handy when you need just a little bit of a color(flat white) and are a good cheap choice when buy paint that you will hardly ever use
Good Brushes:
i have tons of brushes, and most are very cheap to mid range. the brushes that i find to work best for me are #4, #2, #0, #5/0 , and # 3/0.
Knife: always come in handy
Eyedropper: good for adding water/thinner to washes and paints
Pencil: come in handy, and good for marking parts
Tweezers: awesome when working with small parts, a pair of reverse pressure ones are a must.
Pliers: good for opening up stuck paint jars
Assorted brushes: i have a pretty big assortment of brushes. its good to have extras on hand, i am always destroying thru dry-brushing and other stuff. and its good to have some that you can use for a one shot application and throw away
Paint Pallet: great for the artist acrylics, no need to really clean ether, they are wicked cheap
And of course a tasty beverage, make sure you keep it away form your work tho!
now don't think you need all of this to start modeling tho. it has taken me a few years to acquired all of this stuff. and a lot of it you can find in your garage. but different tools work for different people so test out new things!
feel free to question and comment!

Yeah, it has been growing slowly but surely last year. Just need to buy the tools every time I come across a project that requires new tools.

Ah yes! See the Testors and Model Master paint and your awesome brushes look just as crappy as mine? Do you have any Floquil paint? Kinda train set paint? Flat and grungy plus it works for weathering if you can stand the smell?

I love model masters paints, the tiny testor are good to for all the small details(some of the gloss colors have lasted me years) i have a crazy stock pile brushes. i do have a few nice once in the mx but most of the time i buy them from a art store. Most of my "good" brushes are about $4-7 each.
have not use the Floquil paint, i would be surprised if any paint smell could affect me at this point.

Unfortunately, the good brushes always cost a lot of money but worth it in the end. Gotta have the right equipment for the job. I have a bad sense of smell but some paint is really devastating. When you get dizzy it is time to quit painting.

yup,i tell people all the time, if your gonna spend any money on a model/projects the one thing you don't want to be cheap about is the paint and brushes. if you take care of a brush it will last awhile.
of course i have a huge pile of crap brushes(i am sure you do too XD) that are great for everything else. i never pass up dollar store or yard sale "craft" brushes.
i am pretty god damn immune at this point to the fuses XD
i paint a ton with enamels and use thinner all the time. i hear some hate that(prefer water clean up) but i don't seem to notice. when i start getting dizzy i blame it on being 3am lol

You know it! Some brushes are great paint stirrers! It is very rare that I need to grab a new brush from the pile. Actually, can't remember the last time that this happened? I blame my bad sense of smell on the massive intake of toxic painting fumes. My nose hairs have all long been burnt out? Enamel is way better than acrylic but do use both. The best time to work is at 3am or later?

So many colors! Query: how much do those paint wells cost, and where can I find them?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
enc86 In reply to katze316 [2012-05-04 12:42:21 +0000 UTC]
ok so.
the little bottles of enamel about about $1.50
the bottles of model masters enamel are about $2.50
and the bottles of tamiya acrylics are about $2.20
you can find them in hobby stores, and many internet sites.
not to promote anybody but i use scalehobbyist [link] they have a great section and a good search tools. and a fair flat shipping rate.

Mother of God...how can use make use of that many glass bottled paints?! The lids of mine would always get sealed shut over time! That's why for the past years I've almost always used plastic bottled squirt topped acrylics.
I have that same pallet and it used to look exactly the same but I finally got most of the paint off.

enc86 In reply to Super6-4 [2012-05-04 03:16:05 +0000 UTC]
lol yea i love enamels, i guess it cause i have always used them. when a cap gets sticky, its because there is paint in the groves. dab some thinner on a q-tip and clean the groves on the cap and bottle. lol and all the small bottles of enamels are gifts from relatives,i hardly ever use them, but having a basic flat and glossy set comes in handy( most models have a touch of white somewhere) and if all else fails to open a bottle, i have a set of pliers in the tool box.
lol as for the pallet, i clean it every once in a while but it was like a dollar, so i see no need. once the acrylics dry thy will not affect the new color on top.
