Five to ten sentences about Haumea

Sailor Haumea, both as a senshi and in her day-to-day life, is the sort whose life revolves around protecting and caring for others. While her powers over rock provide a reasonably strong defensive and support base, she's only at her most powerful when she exercises her abilities that make her known as a mother goddess: bringing together the power of her children of her past life.

She has lived all of her current life in Hawaii, and a significant portion of her past life as well. Some time before the well-known events of the Silver-Millennium, the trans-Neptunian planetoids were attacked by Chaos when their teammate Sailor Eris turned. Haumea, seeking to protect her family, went into hiding on the politically isolated Earth. She was eventually tracked down and killed by Eris, but her children protected her spirit to allow her to be reborn in the next rebirth cycle.

In her current incarnation, Haumea has a fairly great sense of destined responsibility that keeps her going as a senshi. Knowing she's now a public symbol, she wants to be a good role model, but without sacrificing her normal roles as wife and teacher. However, when it comes down to it, being a senshi will take priority, although not for the usual "destiny of the world at stake" reason. Above all, Haumea keeps up with being a senshi because she's terrified that if she abandons it, her two daughter-guardians, Hi'iaka and Namaka, whom she believes to be her twin daughters who died at birth, will abandon her.

Brief Profile

Name: Sailor Haumea, aka Rochelle Ili'ili'alohi Natsumi Kwan, nee Penhasco
Meaning: Rochelle - little rock; Ili'ili'alohi - glittering stone (Hawaiian); Natsumi - Summer beauty (Japanese); Kwan - mountain (Korean), Penhasco - cliff (Portuguese)
Note: Her name reflects a relatively common naming scheme in Hawaii -- "normal" given name + multiple middle names that reflect national heritage. She's also married, complicating matters

Age: 24
Birthday: July 12 (Cancer)
Ethnicity: Technically, half Hawaiian, quarter Portuguese, quarter Japanese. She identifies as Hawaiian.
Home: Waimanalo, Hawaii

Occupation: Teaches art and Hawaiian language at a small charter school
Likes: Spear fishing, torch ginger, potlucks and barbecues, being around lots of people
Dislikes: Disunity, Portuguese Man-o-war (a jellyfish; she's gets stung a lot), Wyland and Lassen and other generic sell-out tropical artists, touristy beaches
Strengths: Sculpture, she's warm and approachable
Has trouble with: Managing conflict (*cough*doormat*cough*), she's judgmental about other artists, overcoming grief
Dream: To be a mother

A more complete profile, with design notes, is HERE . Profile-wise, it's accurate, other than her symbol (both in terms of brooch and actual symbol), which is now Haumea's official symbol, seen HERE . I've obviously made minor changes to the design (headdress, shoes) since that drawing was made.

Art Notes

EDIT I'm a perfectionist if you didn't know. I wasn't satisfied with the background, so I fixed up the background to make it less BS-y, and rescanned.

Finally got the description done, so I can officially submit this thing. Boiling down Haumea's key points into a well-written 5-10 sentences is not easy.

Slight rework of this lineart that I submitted back in July. I changed my style a bit since then, so I wanted to reflect that with this submission. I also redrew it on bristol board. OMG, bristol is so nice, I love it. Totally asking for pads and pads of it for my birthday/Christmas.

I like the pose and expression for her. It's got that warm and open feeling that she tends to convey, and it's definitely a Hawaii thing (shaka!)

Background is me totally BSing the Ko'olau Mountains out somewhere more on the north end of the windward side, north of Kualoa. Slightly less BS-y now that I looked at a couple reference photos. I wasn't totally off though--it did look quite a bit like the Kualoa area.

Prismacolor and copic marker, prismacolor pencil, and ink on bristol board.

I figured out how to selectively change colors that were eaten by the scanner by watching *sakky-attack 's livestream! I don't know why the hair scanned purple and the pattern colors came out so weird, but now it's fixed!

Beautiful character.

Given her outfit I take it that you based her on Greco-Roman clothing?

Thanks! It was actually more Hawaiian history type stuff, although I can see the Greco-roman tie ins as a result of trying to get the whole warrior look. Besides the obvious Sailor Moon tie-ins, the main influences were King Kamehameha the great [link] , elements of a fern headdress I saw in a painting of the goddess Haumea, petroglyphs and petroglyph-inspired fabric print (less obvious in this, my digital art of her shows it better). I also stuck a couple non-floral leis in with the kukui nut bracelets and the ti leaf leis (the green rope things).

She actually has patterned fabric in her outfit! I love that this happened in an otaku senshi! <3

Thanks! Yeah, I like that pattern. Much simpler to do with digital art, since I have the seamless fill, but I like how this came out. :-D

She is so pretty! * _ * Reading her info was quite interesting. She sounds like quite the fascinating character.

Why thank you! I like her a lot too, and it was pretty hard to distill her description down to just 10 sentences. I'm excited to get to show her off a little more with OSI.

Has she always had that purplish hair? *tries to remember*

Still awesome. I love this senshi. :3 Good luck in OSI! I think she'll be tough to beat in my absolutely humble opinion.

Nah, it's more red. Once I get the description done, I'll upload a new, color fixed version. The scanner ate some of my colors (the hair turning purple, a lot of the contrast on the pattern lost), and I figured out how to selectively fix it in photoshop.

And thanks!

Thank you! Yeah, I was going to get around to it eventually, partly waiting on OSI, mostly working on other things.
