Description
An oldie, but a goodie, done on bitmap but taken off from a scanned pencil sketch. This handsome fellow is of course my own take on everyone's favorite semi-aquatic dinosaur gone demonic, vengeful mutation of mankind's destruction and avid supporter of child adoption Godzilla! Now as mentioned before in the Godzilla Beneath The Waves, it's strangely difficult for me to draw the King of the Monsters, as most attempts end with an un-appealing too-fat-even-for-the-Heisei-era versions of the character, and the few images that do work out have been more like happy accidents then skill.
I don't know why this is; Godzilla is one of the most famous film giants around and yet I have a better time with the likes of Baragon and Gyaos when it comes to fan art...and Gyaos has a funny shaped head that's a pain to draw, especially at different angles.
And sadly I must admit, even this personal version of Godzilla was also something of a lucky accident. Will I ever find the perfect Godzilla + Drawing formula?

Agreed; I wanted something true to the Japanese Godzilla, without the radical re-deign of Zilla (American Godzilla), though even with that said, I was somewhat channeling the 1998 film's beautiful concept art, featuring a more tenacious Zilla on a proper rampage.

A very belated thanks there man, though I feel the picture could be better as a more traditional piece over bitmap / vector art.

Ah, I remember this. From a project you and he-who-cannot-decide-on-a-name were working on, right?
Normally I dislike overly skinny kaiju, especially for such powerful monsters as Goji, but like the Lovecraft monsters, it somehow works with your style. It's clearly stylized, so he doesn't really look all that thin. I do think it'd look better if the legs were a spot thicker, just to keep it looking firm and solid, but as a whole this design is definitely quite lean and powerful looking, while sticking with that nimble-ness that all my favorite Godzillas are known for.
I'd love to see him in that series. There's something about an old hero suddenly and spontaneously crossing over into another franchise, just to beat up the bad guys.

Unfortunately, the 'Rafzilla' was dumped from the project me and Burkion (for the moment) were working on, though it's all for the better since that story has evolved from a mature-rated Power Ranger fan fiction to a slightly more original homage to Super Sentai / PR.
I not a huge fan of skinny giants myself, but what I was going for in this picture is what I think Toho accomplished with the title suit of "Godzilla: Final Wars". BTW, I'm among the supporters of that infamy...but if it will make you feel better, the Godzilla suit and design of 1989's "Biollante" was Heisei-era perfection in my book as well.

Also, I forgot to mention that I like this design, but the lack of a thumbs is a little strange to me.

I know...the lack of thumbs is one element I don't like about this picture...and I drew the blasted thing it!
If I do more Raf Version Godzillas, thumbs will be present!

I must say that I also find it very difficult to draw Godzilla. I think part of the issue is that I care more about how Godzilla looks, so it is harder for me to draw what I think is correct. I often do dozens of sketches before i get something I remotely like. I have been trying to draw my ultimate version of Godzilla on and off for a couple of years and I still have made something a really like.

Why, I totally agree; maybe if Godzilla was a C-to-D list character, drawing him would be a snap.
I've started a series of illustrations dubbed Unlikely Daikaiju Crossovers (the name explains itself) and an attempt to do a Godzilla vs. Gudis (from "Ultraman: Towards the Future") picture failed because Godzilla looked off.
But more on that upcoming series later...

Looks good, and I agree with Danezilla, there isn't a true perfect Goji.

As in the real film suits and designs? Or in fans trying to draw him, whatever incarnation it may be?

I don't think there is such a thing as a 'erfect Godzilla'. We all have different interpretations of him, but a lot of the fan art I've seen seem to follow a similar formula to yours. Slim but muscular limbs and torso (Final Wars). Semi-Mammalian head (Ala-Heisei), semi-vertical posture (G-2000) and the general features that classify Godzilla. Until Toho uses a similar design in a movie, we can keep dreaming of a perfect Godzilla.
Nice pic

Thank you!
Well, I doubt there is a 'erfect-zilla', but one of the things I've enjoyed the most about the recent Millennium series is the different takes on Toho's leading monster. I could get into which G-suits and designs are my favorites, but that's been done to death...unless you want to hear them?
As for the above design, guess we fans can't help ourselves, though even as fan fiction, it's one of my better Godzilla illustrations of all time. Other past attempts can be found below:
