Description
A collaboration between the amazing GoldenStables and myself as our entry for the Annual Dragon Hunt 2014 over at Nordanner. We went with the Vrux dragon, and paired our father-daughter combination of 8098 EQ Makhai Mortem and 9683 GS Kaiser's Law , the two meanest, dragon loathing Nordanners our stables combined owned. They were also given Goldwing Potions to help in case of an aerial battle. The riders were hired for the hunt, as none of the riders at our stables had any experience in dragon hunting and as such thought it would be safer to pair our horses with experienced hands. Our entry is at the end of the battle, just before Kaiser's rider gets the dragon to submit (the rules are that the dragon must be defeated in a fair fight, not killed).
_______________
The Annual Dragon Hunt 2014 was fast approaching, and both stables had been noticing that a particular pair of their Nordanners had been acting up. At first it hadn't been much - the odd attack on a cat or dog, going beserk when they saw the native lace monitors in the paddocks - but they started to act more and more peculiar with time, and soon they were short tempered with the other horses, and being difficult to handle. When Makhai Mortem saw Equeline Stables small pet dragon, he would become completely mad with rage; usually he would just chase it for a game, sometimes nipping at it, however this was different. He wanted to hurt the small reptile now. Over at Golden Stables, his daughter, Kaiser's Law, was displaying the same strange behaviours.
Equeline rang around, she got in contact with as many Nordanner owners as she could - perhaps they had seen this strange turn in behaviour before? Hopefully it was something in the breed, and not that her stud horse had some kind of terrible genetic defect that he had passed on to his only offspring. That would be bad, she'd have to geld him for sure if that was the case. Golden had never seen such behaviour, and they were both at a loss until they found out about the Annual Dragon Hunt. Apparently other horses had acted like this before, and when they went hunting had returned to normal. It was worth a shot.
Both stables had their horses fitted for specialized dragon hunting Tack from Aleria's saddlers, and had found them experienced dragon hunting riders - there was no way any novices were about to ride their mad steeds, and the hunters got on well with the horses. It wasn't long before they were sent off for the expedition with their new handlers, to lands far away where their ancestors had originated, and began training, learning new techniques and how to control the wings their goldenwing potions had blessed them with. When they were ready, it was time to ascend the mountains - they were hunting Vrux.
It was cold and bitter, and the horses were thankful for the protection their tack offered from the elements - they weren't used to snow, yet they had the scent of dragon in their nostrils and every part o them quivered with anticipation. They were finally doing what they were bred to do. Kai was overwhelmed with pride for his daughter, what a partner to have in this fight! There was nothing soft about her and he had every bit of trust in her as he would any hunting stallion. As they entered the caverns and caves the scent grew stronger, and it wasn't long before their riders had them dancing in the dark with the huge Vrux, leading the great beast back, back, out of the cave it dwell in. It thought it was scaring the horses away, ha! The foolish creature. When they got to the entrance of the cave, both riders charged their steeds forward, jabbing at the dragon, enraging it. With a sharp rollback, both horses had turned and flown to safety, the reptile sharp on their heels as they swooped through the air like they'd flown their whole lives.
A plateau offered footing, and as they had practiced, the horses split up - Kai went down as an easy target, Kaiser went up, too fast to bother chasing. The dragon fell for the trick, and soon had it's scaly back to the mare, all it's attention on Kai as he ducked and dove around the beast. It tried to batter him with it's wings, slam in to his with its great tail, yet the stallion was guided expertly by his rider. With a jump that would put an eventer to shame, the stallion leaped over it's tail, his daughter positioned for her rider to release the winning arrow shot from his bow...

I did the sketch, lineart, flat colour, and shading, and Sealla did the final colours and that killer background. And then my internet wouldn't work so she ended up putting everything together and made my greyscale shading look way better than I could of ever made it, finished the whole thing, where I then did some final adjustments, added the border and got it in JUST IN TIME. GO TEAM.
