In newer versions of SAI it might be labeled the "Legacy Pen".

what is the point of clipping the layers?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ERDJIE In reply to DotterelDog [2014-11-13 04:36:20 +0000 UTC]

it masks your colors or opaque pixels to another layer. Without clipping, you could leave pixel leaks that would add unwanted Β color in your palette.

what's the purpose of putting the layers on pass through? ouo I mean, I never understood the purpose of it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ERDJIE In reply to Aurapi [2014-08-13 03:52:05 +0000 UTC]

You mean the group layer? You need to put it on pass through so that every layers inside
with their own layer mode will put over the other layers.

If the mode of group layer is 'Normal', all layers inside will change their modes into 'Normal',
same goes if you make the group layer mode into multiply, then all layers will change their modes into 'Multiply'.

Pass through group layer set lets you use multiple layer modes inside.

Aurapi In reply to ERDJIE [2014-08-13 14:15:38 +0000 UTC]

i think that I understand. but doesn't normal group layer mode also let you use multiple layer modes? or not?

This is gonna sound super silly, but what do you mean add layers every time? You mean lie, draw a section of hair and then make a new layer, then repeat... or draw each line on a new layer??? I'm sorry... I'm a bit confused

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ERDJIE In reply to TehOtakuBunneh [2014-04-22 05:07:19 +0000 UTC]

No, I mean layers as general partition. A layer for a lineart, layer for colors, layer for darker
shade, one for another shade, and so on. :>>

As for the base colors, what I do is I put one layer for every shade. Like, a layer for hair color,
the skin color, then parts of the clothes with similar palettes. You can put all these color layers
into a folder so you can organize.

This tutorial is very understandable thank you for making this...

Question, how do you make a transparent background in SAI? I have no idea how

ERDJIE In reply to MizukiLuna [2014-04-17 16:41:45 +0000 UTC]

save as .png with 32bpp ARGB pixel format. The you can convert it into GIF in photoshop. (ctrl+alt+shift+s)

thank you so much for making this!!!!

quick question, however; why is it important NOT to erase stray pixels but to make them transparent? thank you!!! ;A;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

ERDJIE In reply to sunarii [2013-11-29 16:02:14 +0000 UTC]

I guess... I haven't answered your question directly.. hahaha!

Ok, I'll make it simpler. When you ERASE a part of a line, you will see the space

where you clicked your eraser becoming soft and pixels were not wedged on

its original color. That means, instead of staying in a solid pixel, it became

translucent or see-through.

For example:
You have a big yellow pixel dot, then your background is red.
when you used the Eraser on a part of pixel dot, the edges will

become softer that looks like it blends on the background, appearing

an orangey color.

I hope I explained myself clearly OTL.

OOOOOOOOOOH okay! I thought that's what you meant ; 7; thank you so.much!!!!! ; 7;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

ERDJIE In reply to sunarii [2013-11-29 15:48:32 +0000 UTC]

It is because gif, which is pixel-art's format, doesn't support alpha compositing.

alpha-transparency supports gradation of opacity that overlays intoΒ a transparent

composition partially.

.png is the only format that enables this feature. When there is a partial transparent

pixel in .gif, it will not blend into a transparent composition, but will turn out to blend

in white color instead.

I apply this method because I want people to know the real way how to make pixel art.

Some of them were just cheating by making a vector work, then just applying a 'pixelize'

or 'dithering' effects fromΒ softwares like photoshop to make it look like a genuine pixel art.

I'm just saying tho xDD.
