thank you man, it's a great compliment coming from you! To be honest I just sticked to the less-is-more philosophy here to make it more convincing. Many space artists tend to put a lot of stuff into their backgrounds which is actually quite far from reality.

How exactly did you do the core? I'm trying to get into simular works, but I'm having some trouble doing it.

It is a mix of photoshop painting and 3D asteroids. I also used rock textures and some custom brushes to increase the level of detail. But there are various steps, it's impossible to describe it in a couple of sentences.
