It's supposed to be a moon of a huge gas giant, as for instance shown in this picture of saturn with its moons: i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/a…

Perhaps I didn't get the scales exactly right, but in principle not all objects in space close to each other have to clash.

Oh yeah I didn't really take into account how big these things can be
And I guess there is no atmospheric perspective in space so no real way to show distance or scale.

yea, the moon is closer to the viewer so it appears quite big at first, although it's probably not. Admittedly it's always hard to do that stuff without a 3D program.

It is possible. If their orbits have enough big distance and there is no cross between them it is possible. Tho you are right ofcaurse the gravity of the big planet will have a big influence on a small planet. And it's pretty possible that someday it will suck it on her gravity field and then both planets would be destroyed. Tho according that fact that our universe is always moving rising the distance between all space objects, the fall of the small planet on a big one is not so big as it could be if all stood still.

Sammavanklaarbergen In reply to bnka [2013-11-20 20:24:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the planets would be moving constanly around each other or something right?
Very informative. Thanks!

bnka In reply to Sammavanklaarbergen [2013-11-20 20:37:24 +0000 UTC]

Well if the small one will be catch by the gravity of the big one it will become a sort of planetoid ( or really a planetoid if the mass is enough small ). And it means that it will be just like a big satellite, like a moon for us. Big planet obviously will be moving around nearest big star. Tho also possible that if big planet will not get a small one, then this small planet also will move around the same star but on another, her, orbit. But according the position I guess that our "small planet" is actually just a dieing satellite of the blue planet.

And welcome !

hehe vielen Dank. Ich fand das alte auch nicht soo schlecht eigentlich, aber im Nachhinein freut man sich dann doch, dass man in 4 Jahren doch ein paar Fortschritte gemacht hat..

Amazing stuff... but what is happening here? What's causing this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErikShoemaker In reply to MoonlitCrescent [2013-11-22 08:57:39 +0000 UTC]

I leave that to the viewer's imagination. But as a suggestion it could have been a huge impact with another object in space, which ripped the surface open. Here we have the moment just before the gravity of the destroyed planet will pull in again and suck up the slowly decomposing surface into its core. Or maybe the graviational pull of the huge gas giant nearby will be even stronger, drawing the pieces farther away from the core, as shown in this picture? Who knows.

How did happen to that moon?! o_0
Naturally or unnaturally? In any case it would take quite some force... XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErikShoemaker In reply to DannyAndYoko [2013-11-24 19:14:12 +0000 UTC]

Probably not naturally. It must have been a huge impact of some sort, but I leave that to the viewer's imagination.

QAuZ In reply to ??? [2013-11-20 12:44:01 +0000 UTC]

Lol it has Gucken's style but I'm sure he would not keave it simple like that! The pic is nice but just simple and misses more details.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErikShoemaker In reply to QAuZ [2013-11-20 12:53:14 +0000 UTC]

less is more, especially in case of a wallpaper- and I wanted to keep the star field realistic with a clear focus on the planet core.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

QAuZ In reply to ErikShoemaker [2013-11-20 18:09:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but I said more details for more depth and the pic is nice still

Jscenery In reply to ErikShoemaker [2013-11-20 13:58:07 +0000 UTC]

More detail would ruin this in my honest opinion. Thank you once again for making my jaw drop ! One of your best works if you ask me !

And i wouldn't take anything that Qauz says seriously. he releases a new picture everyday which are nearly identical Simple stock image with few planets on the sky.

Keep up the good work my friend, keep amazing me !

Thank you for your support! I really appreciate it.

And thanks for the compliment as well! I'm happy with how the core turned out. Maybe I could have done more with the background, but I didn't want to distract from what was supposed to be the main point of attention.

I normally found the whole "destroyed planet" concept super cliché and over done, but damn, that's one of the best I've ever seen, I actually really like it, good job!

Yea, I agree, some things have been done to death in space art. That's why I rarely do it because there's not much more to explore. Thank you for the comment!
