Description This is my contribution to this year's Desktopography collection.
You can download various different sizes of this wallpaper here: www.desktopography.net/exhibit…

As the title suggests the idea behind this work is to depict what it would be like to explore a nebula firsthand.
Nebulae can form for instance as remnants of supernovae and are known to be made up of various types of gas clouds. The nebula closest to Earth at the moment is the Orion nebula. But with more than a thousand lightyears distance to Earth it is very unlikely that we will ever be able to witness this spectacle of nature in this manner for ourselves. Unfortunately!

I thank wolfworx and dmaland  for the excellent resources!

This is also included in my new Space Art calendar 2015, check it out

you're not the first to say that it is scary, but why? Thanks a lot for the nice comment!

NineFireStar In reply to ErikShoemaker [2014-10-01 00:20:15 +0000 UTC]

Np!

I think it has something to do with the proportions. If I was to imagine being there, the size of the asteroid (or whatever it's called) on the right is small enough to not feel as stable as a planet but HUGE enough to easily crush you even through the slightest shift. Imagine swimming at an extreme depth alone, and all of a sudden a gigantic whale approaches... Even from afar, I think most people would be terrified.

ErikShoemaker In reply to NineFireStar [2014-10-08 19:03:36 +0000 UTC]

haha yea, asteroids flying around is usally a problem for any nearby vehicle in space. I usually ignore that for art pieces because they look cooler with asteroids most of the time.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NineFireStar In reply to ErikShoemaker [2014-10-09 22:20:40 +0000 UTC]

Well it's just not the asteroid, it's the size ratios that get frightening, in that proximity at least. You bring the picture to life so well that the fear is hinted at for real.

Have you never had that dream when you were young, entirely abstract - you go from something very large, something so extremely large that it engulfs you and everything, then shrinks again, smaller and smaller, until it becomes so infinitesimally small that you can't even fathom how small it is, until it starts to swell again... It's incredibly frightening. I know several people who have had the same kind of dream.

ErikShoemaker In reply to NineFireStar [2014-10-19 08:43:38 +0000 UTC]

I did actually, although I don't know why or understand how it can happen that several people have this kind of dream. Very interesting!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NineFireStar In reply to ErikShoemaker [2014-10-21 22:34:44 +0000 UTC]

It is extremely interesting. I've even heard people talk about it on the radio.

I did some light research into it, trying to find if there was some psychological common theme to it (such as the dream of flying and falling representing fear and lack of control, or teeth falling out representing feelings of power loss), but I couldn't. I have some other hypotheses though. It would be interesting to talk about it, tell me if you find more on the topic.
