Description
This image was created for a competition on [link] , where the objective was to turn the following concept art into a photorealistic matte painting: [link]The contest was fun and very challenging. I worked a good 50 hours on my entry and there are still many things I'd like to change but I just can't work on it anymore and time until deadline has run out anyway.

I don't expect to win anything, but I learned a lot during the process and now I have a cool piece in my gallery. It will also be part of my 2013 calendar.

ging eigentlich. Da man immer auch die anderen Wips beobachten konnte, war das echt motivierend dran weiter zu arbeiten. Nur am Ende fiel dann meins gegenΓΌber den anderen ab, das war etwas frustrierend.

yea, that might be a good thing to do. It's not a must though. You'll notice a few elements that appear in the alien movies, but it's not a problem if you don't. Actually there is very little reference to the alien movies anyway.

hehe well the contest was hosted by the animation studios which produced the matte paintings for Prometheus, and the concept is definitely related to it.

haha I think you did well, the detail is just not very photorealistic yet. I'm not a big fan of my version. The clouds look like carved in stone and not real at all. I didn't know how to pull that off...

My piece was more concept art than anything close to a production mattepaint haha. I can see what you mean about yours, but I still think it has a nice appeal.

Nice design. Monochromatic color scheme works well here. The interesting, curved shapes of the cloud banks focuses attention toward the ships. Well done.

My only problem is the presence of ships. The image is incredible, but they seem a bit out of place. It isn't often you find a good cloudscape and space scene in one.

I think it's an excellent image - certainly captured the concept sketch... Your image has a great sense of depth and your colouring is spot-on.
The only problem - and I think this stems from the original concept as much as anything - is that, because the cloud shapes are quite stylised, they have a tendency to look "carved" as opposed to being shaped by the wind.
But I'm nit-picking - you've done an excellent job, well done!

thank you, that's actually one of the things I didn't like about it. Some of other entries had some great realistic and smooth clouds which looked amazing. I wasn't really able to pull that off.

I only have one question..Why does the name "Prometheus" sound Familiar to me?... Every time I hear the name "Prometheus" it would sound like it originated from a Greek or Roman God/hero...
I know you may not have the answer...But... This is a Wonderful art piece!!! Reminds me of a video-game called "SOLDNER X2: Final Prototype"

prometheus is a greek god and the creator of human life. Maybe that's where you've heard it.
