EDIT: "Sadly, that alone is a NOT good enough reason to stand up and demand change…"

(The iffy thing about long comments is you SHOULD proof-read them too.)

Ah, tis true. But I as a deviant with little comments enjoy getting even the smallest comments. But I can see how this is much needed for commenting on someone who gets many comments (like you). You are making many good points in this.

I must ad on to this however.

I think if you are going to leave a comment it should be written with correct spelling (or close to it anyway). This is an example of a comment I cannot understand and is truly useless:

omigd! fyi this is totly kewl + pink! lol but w/e ttyl cul8er ppls!

I indeed must show this to my friends. A

thnx Scaff.. plus the fav - means a lot!
Spelling is sometimes a problem in this multi language community --
I do agree the TXT sp33ch of some people is getting rather cryptic -- hahahaha -
(a great way to generate more comments - is to go to the #thumbshare chat section of dA)

Keep on drawing - and enjoy Canada Day!!!

Eh, I didn't really need that personally, but you're right. However, I don't mind short comments as long as they contain more than 3 words. A sentence is okay, if it actually means something. Just saying what you don't like is fine, like saying "It's great, but his left foot is weird", that's an okay comment to me. It's precise, and although I do appreciate longer comments, it's the kind that gets you to understand what the critic means without dragging it on. I do dislike one or two word comments, though, even though I just joined today... -_-.

I hate when I come upon deviations that have more favs than comments.

If you like it that much, couldn't you at least say SOMETHING to the artist that made it?

I'm happy to say that i've tried to make it a habit not to post comments that are just one exclamatory word. Though sometimes its so hard to say how much a piece amazes you without using such words as "cool" or "wow"... but as much as I appreciate every comment I get and every praise-filled word I get, I enjoy reading the ones that actually have something to say. I encourage people to critique my work when they comment that way its not hard for them to find something useful to say about it. And feedback is a must. I can't go through my comments without singling them out to each person and thanking them. I don't like it when someone doesn't thank me (though it happens so often that I almost don't notice it anymore) so I wouldn't want some of my favorite watchers to feel unappreciated. Its because of them and their wonderful comments and/or crits that i've become better as an artist. So I can understand what you were trying to say up there!

WOW!

Look at all the nice long comments that have been written to this piece,
I really appreciate everybody taking the time...
You are so right that it's hard to maintain the level of commenting when a lot of people are being watched - maybe we can all find some inbetween alternative...
Thnx for the great words,....

surrealmuse In reply to ??? [2004-05-01 00:04:11 +0000 UTC]

I actually just recently left another online art community due to the abuse of comments...we didn't really have a problem with the short wows compared to the overty critical comments from those who appeared to think they were experts in art...althought their own artwork suggested other wise.

I think sometimes it is difficult for artists to discuss art...while they can visually express themselves visually...they somehow do not know how to effective express themselves verbally.

When it comes to commenting on another artist's work...I think it is important to point out exactly what "wows" you, and if you're feeling up to it, it is good to share a little constructive feedback ever now and then. But for the most part, I try to stay focused on the positives for a couple of reasons.

For one, many artists are overtly critical of their own works. To the point, that they sometimes stop creating art simply because they think that they are not good enough. However, as we all know...every artist has a bad day. Not everything we create is a masterpiece. But if you keep creating art, you do have those "wow" moments.

Another reason to be considerate in your comments is the understanding that many artists turn to art as a therapeutic way to help them deal with the world around them. I know for me, it has been a very healing experience to be able to express myself visually. It allows me to let it all out...

Sometimes the artwork we create can be dark, it can be angry, it can be depressing....those emotions are just part of life...

Turning to your art to find a place to express those emotions is a healthy way to deal with stress. It can also help turn things around...once you let go, let it all out...you sometimes find that you can take a deep breath of relief...knowing that it is going to be ok, that maybe there is hope.

I'm sure you were not quite expecting such a lengthly comment...but this is one of the things that I love about interacting with other artists...by sharing and communicating...we often trigger thoughts and ideas that are beyond what the original artist intended...so thanks for sharing your thoughts...I think I might post this comment in my journals since it touched on some thoughts that have been in the back of my mind...

That's exactly the kinda comments I was envoking! I love to have more of a discussion going on here at DA - more indepth - talking about art and what it means to everyone one.
Sharing info - yep - you are so right! Boy! (or rather...Girl!) you hit the nail right on the head!
That's a nice piece of text there and I hope many people will read it!

You have a way with expressing yourself in words... I also agree with the therapeutic side of things, this place for me is often a form of escapism from the crazy hectic world out there. I come here to have a nice time - and share my thoughts and ideas with the rest of the DA community - especially those who have over time become good friends.

Keep writing! Keep commenting - keep submitting - oh, ... and if you want to you can always email me - I love corresponding - and always reply!

lol...the love is very much appreciated...I was quite the up and coming member at my last little community...but we didn't quite have the moderators to put people in their spot when appropriate...while my husband and several of the members were very supportive...that little comment just destroyed something inside...and not to mention, deviantart does have so much more to offer...so here I am...

so I thank you for the warm welcome...it is much appreciated...as I mentioned in one of my works, I was very active in the arts community in college...but in my profession of being an accountant...I don't usually meet very many like minded individuals at work...and I am a bit shy so I haven't ventured out as much in the area I live in now...so the internet has become my little art haven.

WoW! a creative accountant....
I hope you don't use the creativity in the books! hehehe

Nice to see you getting support from your husband, my wife doesn't quite
understand my addiction to this place yet - she's is however used to me taking
heaps of photos of her - ....

Nice to have made another friend!

surrealmuse In reply to eRiQ [2004-05-01 02:40:27 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I did get teased one time for being a creative accountant when I used all sorts of color coding on a spreadsheet once...but no, normally, I am straight by the books...the field calls out to my analyical side.

As for the support, I'm hoping my husband will consider joining...he is an amazing sketch artist...much more than I am. My focus tends to be more on colors...so eventually, we might do some collaboration projects together.

As for the addiction to art, tell your wife that it is much better than video games, which is one of my husband's other interests...

I've never been one for video games...I'd rather interact with people in real life or through the internet either through my art or writing...but I also understand the need to get away from it all...

And for awhile there, he got me to play black&white, I think it was called...basically, it allowed you to be god...hehehe

WoW

just kidding I think it's harder each time to comment a deviation and it takes also a lot of time. so with short comments you can comment more deviations in less time. I don't know much to say when I like a deviation very much then "great job" or "beautiful capture"
I mean I have about 90 messages a day so if I comment like I'm doing right now, it takes me about 4 hours to finish. btw this took me 10 minutes
I type very slow hehehe oke 11 minutes

hehehe - thnx for taking 11 minutes to comment on this..
I do agree with you - that it might get out of hand with hundreds of deviations to wrestle through,... but at least if we like somethink a lot - we should be able to put more words to it...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

tuborg [2004-04-30 22:14:51 +0000 UTC]

well my comments are often short
I have most of the time about 200 deviations waiting for comments in my inbox and if I were to write a detailed comment on everyone of the I woudnΒ΄t be able to do anything else.
I really love to get long and detailed comments on my work but I seldome give that kind of comments myself.
I think most of all itΒ΄s the thougt behind the deviation that triggers the willingness to make a long comment.
Some artist upload one picture in a week time and you can really tell that they have been spending hours and hours working on it to make it perfect...........then I feel I must give them a really good comment.

i dont believe in the short comment rule. I for one do happen to say "cool" or "wow". Its hard for me to put into words what i think about a certain piece of work and im sure im not the only one. One should be thankful for every comment they recieve...regardless of it just being "wow" or "cool". I get those comments all the time..and dont care that they are short. I appreciate them just like i would a very long comment. I also just like to be a silent fav'er. People should appreciate that as well.
