Description
I am pretty happy with this one. Dramatic lighting is so fun to paint (or draw)!Acrylic on canvas.

"I'm a scary and powerful FIRE DEMON!"
Love Calcifer. And that movie in general.

I actually just finished reading the book by Diana Wynne Jones. In the book Calcifer's flame is blue but I prefer him bright orange the way you have him in this painting. Even though I like both the book and Miyazaki's film, I still think Miyazaki's interpretation is way more imaginative.

I was always curious about reading the book, but never got around to it. To be honest, I thought it might ruin the movie a bit for me...

I completely understand your hesitation, movie adaptations of novels tend to suffer or vice versa. A huge motivation for me to read the book was to discover if Howl really could see Sophie as a young girl in the scene when he sees her sleeping and the other scene when he first brings her to the flower field. Miyazaki's interpretation of this mystery is just genius.

(Sorry for the late response)
Ohhh...you know I never thought about that. Now I'm curious. Well...since I'm probably never gonna get around to reading ( ) does he see her as a young girl when she's sleeping, or was that just Miyazaki's addition?

Alright then!! Let me put it this way, Howl hopes the old lady Sophie is the young girl he met in town (the stroll through the sky part of the movie). Throughout the book Howl was trying to figure out Sophie's identity. By the time he purchases the hat shop (includes it in his moving castle) he knew for certain and both Calcifer and Howl were waiting for Sophie to break the curse. Miyazaki's genius comes through because both the book and the movie are through Sophie's perspective, she always perceives herself as an old lady while most of the characters who knew about her curse "imagine" her youth and vitality---actually they come to depend it.
Also, in the book Sophie has a strange magic power: when she speaks to inanimate objects they become exactly what she directs them to be. The hat you see her mother wearing in the moving was actually one of Sophie's creations and as she was trimming it she said "You will marry money" and sure enough Sophie's mother marries some baron or duke.

All I can say is...wow. This just gave me a whole new perspective on Miyazaki's genius! That doesn't seem like an easy thing to pull off in a movie – actually, the more that I think about it, the harder it sounds! – and I like how he kindof left it up to the viewer's imagination (assuming they haven't read the book). I always did like the part where Sophie would change to her younger self when she got, you know, passionate about something – and then suddenly change back. I always thought it had a little to do with her self-confidence, because especially in the beginning she seemed to be distancing herself from all the other girls; believing she wasn't as pretty.
I think I'm actually more curious about the book, now. Maybe I'll actually stop by a Barnes and Noble or something and check it out...

It's Howl with his natural bla-- err-blond hair! Nice job on the lighting and I'd also like to say that Calcifer offered comic-relief as great as Futurama's Bender.

You watch Futurama, too?? Love that show (although the newest season wasn't quite as funny...)
All hail Hypnotoad...

Well... it's not that the new season was bad, just not as funny as I was expecting. It did have its moments, though.
Have you seen the second movie? Bender's Big Game I think it's called...

Ah so it wasn't as big a disappointment as I was afraid of. That's good to hear. Is that the one with the ugly nudist aliens who take over the earth and bender finds the binary code for time-travel?

No, I think that's movie 1 (?). Movie 2 is where it starts to become a parody of Lord of the Rings.
