Description I'm most pleased with the way Morgoth turned out! I imagined his armour to be sophisticated, yet crudely wrought - thinking of the Hells of Iron. It would seem with his corruption, everything he devises is crude and hellish. So, even Grond - as impressive as it sounds - is a big, nasty, diabolically heavy, and raw-formed weapon.
I wanted to compliment the Sauron seen in the films - I couldn't help it this time.
Even the look of Angband was to echo the "molten-formed" iron works of Morgoth.
Fingolfin is okay. I wanted him to be alive with light - maybe he's a bit too "glow-ey"???

I've experimented with the colour for it. Here's the result: [link]

Morgoth's armor looks great. I like those colours. When it comes to Fingolfin being 'glow-ey' I think it looks good.

AWESOME!!! I'm reading the Silmarillion at the moment. This is just how I pictured Morgoth to look.

Great work.

Ooh, very interesting to see the final product after seeing the process. I think your choice to make Fingolfin lighter as a whole is contrast enough to the impressive Morgoth, you can clearly see the good vs. evil here Very epic!

It looks great! I wouldn't like to be at Fingolfin's place...Melkor looks particularly fearsome with this helmet: it evokes a spider face. And I especially love the glow of the Silmarils and the surrounds of Fingolfin.

EthalenSkye In reply to Wild-Huntress [2010-01-30 05:27:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, Huntress! The spidery resemblance is an excellent observation, my friend! When I was deciding what to do with Morgoth's helm, skeletal and spider came to mind - in particular because of his dealings with Ungoliant.

Splendid work! I like how Fingolfin turned out, he looks just right with the light, so don't worry... And Morgoth... Well, that's one of the scariest versions of the evil Vala I have ever seen... So, well done! I really love it!

Fantastic work! I really like your thoughts on the armour design. And Grond is impressive, raw-formed or no
And for some reason I really like the look on Fingolfin's face - kind of "Oh shit, how am I going to get out of this?!"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EthalenSkye In reply to Qitian [2010-01-30 05:41:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I kinda see Fingolfin thinking really hard about what the heck is he supposed to hit to do any damage on that evil bastard!
I don't know if it shows, but Grond lifted as high as it is, is supposed to suggest that the hammer is about the size of Fingolfin with quite a bit of girth.
Thank you very much!!!

I forgot to mention what I used . . . .my bad. . . . .

Started out with my usual good ol' paper, favourite mechanical pencil and Faber Castell pens - both drawing and greyscale.
Took it in to Corel PSP for some darkening from the scan and experimented with some looks - this one was simple as Effect-Photo Effects-Film and Filters, then messed with Film Looks in that department. The first one worked the best: Glamour.
I used the airbrush tool and prismacolour to make Fingolfin glow and three sunburst effects for the Silmarils.

Fun!!!!

Welcome to the group Don't think we have any of your pieces there, other than the one you just submitted, of course XD

Oh, now that would explain the glows! I thought they were painted or something XD Always fun to experiment with digital stuff on traditional works ^^ I just discovered some new tools in Photoshop... whenever I get a new laptop I'll have to get back to trying my hand at digital painting XD

No wonder I couldn't submit to the Silmarillion folder! I'm in now!

OMG YES!
i wish i had time to do this sort of thing again! i love the details and action! and no i dont think he's got too much glow! i love that effect, how did you do it?

and this is a coincidence lol before i saw your WIP my sons and i started watching the LOTR movies. i've never read the books but have plans to - my mom has them somewhere in her library - and oddly enough, my youngest son - almost 3 yrs old - LOVES these movies! i was worried it would give them nightmares or worse... the violence and fighting etc.. but so far nothing. my oldest likes some of it but he loses interest quickly because there is no machinery to speak of. but the youngest loves the battle, and the "scary monsters"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EthalenSkye In reply to Dogote [2010-01-23 07:53:44 +0000 UTC]

LOTR is absolutely kid friendly! What're you talking about, G?!! Haha, kiddin . . .
As far as time goes, I've had plenty lately being betwixt jobs . . .

To make Fingolfin glow I used prismacolour first and then used the airbrush tool in Corel PSP.

I love your first line "OMG YES!" Awesome!
I'm very glad you like it!

Dogote In reply to EthalenSkye [2010-01-24 02:13:45 +0000 UTC]

lol well you're not the only one to think so apparently, i have finally decided to read these books..... had too many of those freak coincidences, ok... but i cant find my mom's copy of the books so i went to the library.. found out when i got there i had left my card at home.
but the librarian said next time when i was in to look in the kid's section for those books.

i told my mom when i got home and she said "Pfft! figures... stupid small towns...."
she's read them a few times in her life and told me the Hobbit is a little more up beat than the LOTRs. well i can see her point. i've never read them but i have seen the movies.. i remember the ooold Hobbit cartoon movie. didnt like the art much but i remember it wasnt quite as dreary as Frodo's story.

lol some are i know. but when i worked in a high school library i was opposite. my friends would laugh at me because every book they picked up would have my name already in it - because when i would be tasked to reshelve books i would find something new and interesting and check it out for myself lol

Very impressive work indeed. I especially like how you used colours here (shades of grey and brown works here extremely well), and the scenery altogether. Glow-effect in the crown and around Fingolfin is a good addition too.

In my opinion, it's hard to say what kind of colours you'll might use if this version is already at this level. But well, I dont have experiences with colouring so I'll wait and see.
