Progress of this etherealdreamcloud.deviantart.…Well, I tend to pick previous pictures I did to pick the colours, since I don't always remember what colours I've used. I tend to want the colours to be consistent unless I'm going for a different art-style or something along the lines.
I also sometimes when I have no idea what clothes to give to character (or how the character would look like in general), I look up for some pictures to get a better idea. Once I do get a better idea, I draw clothes similar but different to the original. Keep in mind that I more often do that while drawing in my sketchbook, especially when I create new characters. I know that's sort of cheating, but I'm not very creative if I don't do that.

I know it's normal, I even searched poses for reference. Though with designing, it would be kind of iffy because it may seem to someone else as "copying".
And I'm glad to know that I'm not alone with the using previous works as colour palettes
