I think a lot of novice artists think as long as they have a foreground, mid ground and background, they can afford to have 2/3 of them completely flat. That's why when someone takes it one step further and has an element point into the depth or towards the front (such as a path, a thick tree limb, a hanging bridge), it really appeals to me because it's so rarely seen. Also a lot of times people paint a scene with seemingly thick vegetation, place a row of foreground grass, overhanging branches etc at the edges of the frame, yet leave the mid ground completely exposed and without any variance in terrain. It makes it look like an artificial curtain at the edge of a theater stage.

Excellent tutorial. This is one of the best conceptual art tutorials I have ever seen. None of my art teachers ever went this far. Your classifications for form, shape and 3D space are spot on and most useful!
Well done, Lorenzo!

Hello Lorenzo! I'm a long time admirer of your work and would like to thank you for continually providing these super helpful drawing lessons! You tend to cover a lot of obscure subjects that often get overlooked, so good on you for that
I know your work tends to incorporate more natural elements and scenery, but for this guide in particular I'd love to know how these strategies might translate into more refined interior environments/settings i.e. rooms, schools, shopping malls, haunted houses, "secret lairs", etc.
Far too often I see these kinds of backgrounds be nothing more than (occasionally some tossed-in perspective on) flat backgrounds! It'd be really nice to see what you'd suggest to make even inside places feel more 3d thanks again!

Hey StartJita!
Thank you so much for such a wonderful message! So nice to hear that you've been enjoying all this work for a while, and that the tutorials are proving useful and fun, that's awesome to hear
Thanks so much for your question on how to apply this to interiors - I'll be covering EVERYTHING in the end - I've added your suggestions to the list, and there'll also be some other tutorials on interiors coming up, as well as some tutes on perspective, which will hopefully all help build a good set of ideas for you to apply to your interiors etc. May take a while to get to them, but hopefully in the meantime you'll enjoy all the others too!
Cheers!

Ah, so good to know you're going to be able to use it on your comic, that's awesome! Environments can seem trickier than they are, it's all about seeing them as simple forms that compliment and support your characters and narrative

The art within each panel makes very good use of such a simple palette and simple shapes; overall, it's all very classily done.

Thank you so much, Sam! Yes, I kept them small because if the layout reads at that size, you know it works, and will translate up to full sized art strongly. Many thanks for such kind words!

Backgrounds... I don't like drawing them, but this provides great ways to draw them.
Baffles me that YOU USED ONLY 4 COLORS for these backgrounds!

Man, I love backgrounds, I think they're the most important element to generating a mood and tone in any piece of art. But I know a lot of people don't enjoy planning them into their drawings, hopefully this simple approach will make them seem a little more interesting to tackle?
Cheers pal!
