Description

The Euderion-A was the fifth starfleet ship with this name, after a Daedalus class Cruiser (NCC-126 ) in 2186, a Constellation class (NCC-1951 ) in 2272, a New Orleans class (NCC-62470 ) in 2343, and a Akira class (NCC-79541 ) in 2373. The NCC-79541 was part in the final battle for Cardassia Prime and took a heavy beating. Back in drydock she was decommissioned and dismantled into its component parts. It turned out that large parts of the ship were still usable and it was decided to use them in the construction of a new Akira class starship. Since almost a third of the components could be reused, the decision was made to use the name Euderion-A which went into service in 2376.

The year 2381 marks one of the largest ship upgrade programs of the 24th century. Much like the refit program of the 2270s, which began with the complete remodeling of the Constitution class and would become groundbreaking for the new century, Starfleet began ordering most of its ships back into the shipyards in 2381.
When the missing USS Voyager returns from the Delta Quadrant in 2378, she brought a couple new technologies from her long lone journey. Most prominent, the Quantum Slipstream drive, an advanced form of interstellar propulsion allowing starships to break through the warp speed barrier.

In the year 2380, the Vesta-class Federation starship USS Aventine was among the first Starfleet vessels to be fitted with a quantum slipstream drive, but in 2381 Starfleet began an fleet wide upgrade program and installing quantum slipstream drives on most of its vessels when they were compatible with the upgrade.

By mid-2381, the USS Euderion NCC-79541-A was already in drydock repairing damage from the Battle of Salvinius. The ship sustained extensive damage while attempting to protect a Cardassian refugee convoy. Due to the extensive damage, Starfleet decided to put the ship straight into the upgrade program. Many parts had to be rebuilt anyway, so she could immediately benefit from the innovations.

Among other things, the Euderion received a new Quantum Slipstream Drive with its Quantum field focus controller and a new weapon pod to replace two of the torpedo launchers there with additional sensor arrays. This resulted in a complete replacement of the nacelles, pylons and torpedo tower, leaving only the saucer and catamaran sections of the original ship. The slipstream drive fell short of the original expectations, since many converted ships required too much energy to create a suitable transfer tunnel due to their wide shape, but it allowed the ship to "sprint" shorter distances. For safety reasons, these drives could only be operated for a short time before they had to be switched off. In this short time, however, the spaceship was able to cross an entire sector of space in a couple of minutes, which would have taken several days with conventional propulsion. After a short period of charging and recalibrating, they could be reactivated for another "sprint". Initial testing indicated that the outward appearance of the Akira class was capable of creating a large enough slipstream tunnel which the ship could maintain for a maximum of 12.47 minutes before the tunnel collapsed and the drive had to be recharged and recalibrated. This was still very energy-sapping, so use was limited to emergencies.

Beside that, the ship was upgraded with Mark XII Quantum Phase Phasers who replaced the older Mark X Particle Phasers. New in this is the zero-point field generator which was already used in the related quantum torpedo. When a phaser shot is fired, the generator sends a wave pulse into the nadion beam, which when it hits an object opens a short rift in the zero-point vacuum, a kind of quantum subspace (hence the name quantum phaser), and can release tremendous energy. The phaser uses the principles of the big bang on a small scale. The original Akira class had only three phaser banks, as they were originally designed as torpedo cruisers. A large primary phaser bank on top of the saucer section and two smaller ones on the bottom. With the upgrade of 2381, the Advance Starship Design Bureau wanted to correct some mistakes. Two of the torpedo launchers were removed and replaced with three small phaser banks that were rear-facing to allow for a larger firing radius. The upgraded Akira class now has 6 phaser stripes.

Along with other internal upgrades such as the Cetacean Ops on deck 10, the upgrade to the current LCARS system and the new bridge module, one of the more notable upgrades is the replacement of the weapon mission pod. 15 photon torpedo launchers gave the original Akira model the classification as a torpedo cruiser. That may have sounded good on the drawing board, but in practice this high number of launch pads has never really paid off. Modern launcher systems could fire up to eight torpedoes from a single launcher, so using all 15 launchers was extremely unlikely. Starfleet therefore decided to re-imagine the Euderion's weapons module and make it a hybrid design. Half torpedo turret, half sensor turret. Of the original eight photon torpedo launchers, two of the rear-firing launchers were removed and replaced in the vacated space with a phaser bank and a docking device for a new Arrow-class runabout. As a hybrid module, the mission pod now also has a new sensor array. This extended the range of vision of the standard sensors by 26 percent and significantly increased the sensor resolution, so that planetary scans or similar could not only be carried out faster, but also more accurately. The new tower now also had the Quantum field focus Controller integrated at its highest point, which enables the ship to travel safely in the slipstream.

The length of the ship increased from 464 meters to 556 meters due to the new warp nacelles and the pylons, which were aligned further aft.
