Description

A while ago, i made a Starship Comparison for most of the larger size SciFi-Hero ships, such as the Galactica, the Andromeda Ascendant, Star Treks Galaxy class USS Enterprise, the Moya or Star Wars Imperial class Star Destroyer. (you can find it here: fav.me/d9gbjeo )

Now after lots and lots of request which ended in my mailbox who asked how big the Orville is, i made this image. More or less most of the major mid or small size Hero ships.

The list does not claim to be complete.

For the size of the White Star please note, that we had seen three different scales during the show.
In first they worked with an size between 120 to 260 meters. The original dimensions made some parts of the ship far too small to walk through, especially after accounting for hull thickness and the size for the shuttlecrafts etc. This was especially problematic at the neck to the bridge module and for the shuttlebay which should be able to hold four Minbari fighters. Designer Jim Earls, who joined B5 in Season 4 scaled up the ship to the 475 meters. The new scale was officially approved by JMS and the producers and is now the size to which the animators must scale.

What this reminds me of more than anything else was the size constraints that JMS imposed on his universe through the minimum size of hyperdrives. It led to a very unique scaling of the special effects.

Fantastic to see the White Star from B5. I'm happy to see that this franchise is still being remembered

Babylon 5 was and is still a great SciFi-Show. Some of the best of this genre.

When you look through the description of this image, you will see, that i co-work on the Mass Effect, Star Trek and Dune section of this image.

That's really well made. Fun fact, the largest boat on earth (a gas tanker in Korea) is only slightly longer than the last of those.

The largest ship ever built by length was the Seawise Giant at 458.46 m (1,504.1 ft). So in between Voyager and the White Star

And "The Prelude" is 488m. It relies on towing for its mobility, so I can certainly see arguments against calling it a ship, but Wikipedians are loathe to give anything so controversially known anything but a safe label. Tomatoes suffer the same bullying for being fruits that are also vegetables.

Aaaaand the ship that moves like a fighter is the biggest one of them all. Well done, Babylonian productions. Well done.

well- no air resistance. Also a nice visual example of how much more advanced teh Minbari and Vorlons are.  there's one White Star moment that really sticks with me-  when they're fighting the Omega X's. one takes an engine hit, spins out of control and smashes right into the ship that killed her...

Whenever I see the White Star scaled against other ships I always think she is too large for some reason.  Anyways, you've brought together a fine flotilla from fandom fleets!

In first i thought about adding the Defiant, but we never had a canon size for her. The Defiant size varies between 90 and 170 meters.

wellis In reply to Euderion [2019-03-17 02:19:25 +0000 UTC]

According to this, the CG mesh is 170.7 meters: memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/D…

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Euderion In reply to wellis [2019-03-17 13:04:48 +0000 UTC]

But the same site says, that the CG model mostly was scaled as around 130 meters.

The Defiant case is difficult to handle with all the different sizes for this ship.

Depends on the reference, since they never scaled the models properly.

Nice - as others have said, nice to see the Orville in here!

One thing about her, though: I don't know what they call the engine rings, but the middle one feeds straight into the top one, it doesn't have that curved shape upwards into the top ring. (Double checked this - you can find a couple of shots of the actual Orville model being used for filming on google image search.)

I've been enjoying the show quite a bit - that, ST: Discovery and The Expanse being my favorite TV shows of the moment. (Well, okay, The Expanse ain't here right this minute and I'm not sure I'll be able to catch it on Amazon Prime...)

Never played Mass Effect but I *love* the Normandy, as well!

Can't believe the Millennium Falcon is the smallest of all these...

Nifty comparison chart!

According to Trekyards (Fleetyards edition.), Prometheus and Daedalus are a lot bigger than the Wiki suggests.

Also... the White Star looks TINY in the show. That's 475 meters? Or is it, like the Stargate ships, what the plot requires?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Euderion In reply to Kadindarklord [2019-03-04 23:01:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the 225 meters wiki info for the Stargate Daedalus class was way too small. I have done my own calculation because i made a 3d model for the Daedalus and come to the size of around 650 meters. The Prometheus instead was way smaller. It was just a prototype, so the 195 meters seems matching.

That the White Star looks tiny in the show is mostly because of the other ships we saw her with. In relation to these giants even a 475 meter ships look small. The Omega Destroyer were nearly 2 kilometer long. Most of the Babylon 5 ships have Star Destroyer sizes.

WindseekerArts In reply to Euderion [2019-03-05 00:55:50 +0000 UTC]

Also there were 3 different classes of White Stars. There was a sort of gunboat model you see in the last episode of the series. The one that John took to the end.

Excellent!  I had not realized the size of The Orville, especially in comparison to other famous (or infamous) ships.

Euderion In reply to FactionParadox [2019-03-07 09:53:14 +0000 UTC]

The size of the Orville was my main motive for this comparison because many people scaled her wrong.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FactionParadox In reply to Euderion [2019-03-07 14:23:51 +0000 UTC]

She is a very decent size and they often refer to her in the show as a mid-level exploratory cruiser.  How big are their BIG ships then?!  Wow!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Euderion In reply to FactionParadox [2019-03-07 14:39:58 +0000 UTC]

The largest Planetary Union ship we saw to this time is the Leviathan class Dreadnought most of the Admirals fly. Have not a exact size of that thing at this moment, but it is roughly three times the length of the Orville, so around 900 to 1000 meters.

FactionParadox In reply to Euderion [2019-03-08 00:44:35 +0000 UTC]

I only finished season one recently and have not had a chance to see any of season two yet.  They may show other ships in S2, I am not guessing anything, I want to be surprised.

mdbruffy [2019-03-04 22:21:14 +0000 UTC]

It's still a good effort. I didn't realize the White Star was that big. But then, I've only seen it shown against the Babylon 5 station- which is HUGE.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Euderion In reply to mdbruffy [2019-03-05 11:10:54 +0000 UTC]

Or against the Earth Destroyers which are nearly 2 kilometer. Most of Babylon 5 ships have Star Destroyer sizes, so it is no wonder, that even a 475 meter ship looks small in comparison.

Vumpalouska [2019-03-04 22:20:27 +0000 UTC]

Huh, the Serenity is really tiny for a ship with as much interior space as it appears to have.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Euderion In reply to Vumpalouska [2019-03-05 10:37:47 +0000 UTC]

Beside the Millennium Falcon, the Serenity is such case were the filming set was build in 1:1 so it is no guesswork. It fits. There is also a very good technical Manual of the Firefly class out there with an awesome cross-section of the ship.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vumpalouska In reply to Euderion [2019-03-05 11:35:28 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm. Interesting. Admittedly Firefly is not particularly hard SF, but I would have expected a ship of that size to have a significantly larger percentage of its interior devoted to machinery and fuel tanks.
