Update 1/17/2008
I wasn't entirely happy with the first version and have since totally redone the tutorial.
More screenshots (about 160, I believe) and more descriptions all around.
It's much, much more complete than the original!

New to this version
"Random" button - Pressing the top corner (where the 'close program X' is.) will take you to a random frame.
Layer Blend Modes - I went over it in depth this time around.
More descriptions - Check around, lots of stuff has been revamped.

Update: Jan. 18, 2008
I finally managed to isolate the bug in my random script and have fixed the problem. I also fixed one or two minor grammatical errors that I noticed.

Update: Jan. 20, 2008
I just clicked the Download button for reasons even I don't fully understand only to realize that it doesn't actually allow you to download this tutorial... Armed with such knowledge, I've now made it possible to, what else, but download this tutorial! You can get it for offline use (or whatever else really) here! [link]

Jan. 22, 2008
This update features some incredibly minor aesthetic issues. The preloader is more "professional" now and all the text links are more noticeable. Also, I cleaned up the grammar in the "Help menu" section.

Anyone who preferred the first version can find it in my Scraps here. [link]

Sorry if this is a simple question, but I keep getting the message "The required plug-in is not installed"
What should the plug-in be? I have flash 10 installed!!!
Looking forward to starting to use this program
Thanks

You don't need Flash, you need the Flash player.

I've tried everything that even slightly resembles a download link, but I can NOT find that tutorial to download. Everything I have found is just another link to this page. Can someone tell me EXACTLY where that link is or if it has been taken down?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tiny-Nuttella In reply to hoplesslylost [2010-01-16 12:12:57 +0000 UTC]

[link] try that.

if you can see the little orange screen on the right side of the picture/art/whatever (this ges for everything on DA) it's the button, click it.

for this one, i went into the downloadable link which is mentioned in the artists comment, and then on that page i pressed download.

Hope I helped and that it was understandable.

I don't have a clue how to use this tutorial. Does anyone believe in explanations? All I want to know is how to crop a photo, and I can't figure that out. It makes this program useless for me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Eulogy-Dignity In reply to reh48 [2009-11-11 20:56:41 +0000 UTC]

The Crop Tool isn't readily apparent, I'll admit. Rather, it isn't a tool at all.

Use any Selection Tool to select the region you wish to crop, then use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+X to crop the image to that specific area.

If you're not one for keyboard shortcuts, you can find the command under the Image menu in the menu bar.

I apologize for my late response, but hopefully you'll still find some good uses for Paint.NET in the future!

you forgot to put in posterize...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Eulogy-Dignity In reply to shadowfirepearl [2009-11-11 20:59:58 +0000 UTC]

Posterize wasn't a built-in effect at the time this tutorial was made. Though I agree it needs to be added now, there's nothing that can be done from my end. My hard drive crashed, taking the original .fla with it as well as the copy of Flash I was using at the time. (Which was gifted to me by a guy I worked for as an intern for a few months. I've long since moved and fallen out of contact with him to retrieve any licensing info again.)

whoa, this is incredible. it helped me out ALOT! let me tell ya. heh, but i have one question, how do you move one image onto another? like.....say i drew something on a picture, then i wanted to copy it over to another image i have on paint.net.....? know what i mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Eulogy-Dignity In reply to nintenerd [2009-08-26 20:19:32 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... Well, you could copy everything on that layer and paste it into the other image.

Alternatively, if you need the whole image to be moved, try going to the Layers menu in the top menu bar, then Layers > Import From File command. (The Import From File option is actually covered briefly in the tutorial. )

Is there a tool for dithering?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Eulogy-Dignity In reply to Plaguemotes [2009-08-26 20:15:56 +0000 UTC]

To the best of my knowledge, there is no Dithering tool or effect.

You could play around with it and try combining effects with Frosted Glass or something, but I haven't tried anything and can't guarantee it'll work the way you want.

Eulogy-Dignity In reply to Ipidnano [2009-07-05 20:27:19 +0000 UTC]

A truly blurry picture can be a monster to fix. I'm not even sure how to really get around to it, because I've never tried.

I did a quick search on the Paint.NET forums and found some plugins that may help you.

If not, try going to the forums and asking in the General Discussion and Questions section, if you haven't already.

First off, glad you like it!
Secondly, I'm very sorry for the extremely late reply. I forgot my password and was too busy with stuff to bother with dA.
---

Now then, to answer the question that has most likely already been answered or figured out...

On the top menu bar, go to Window, and press "Reset Window Locations" or press F7 to restore the Layers window.
---

Glad this helped you.

StainedInColor In reply to ??? [2008-11-26 05:57:33 +0000 UTC]

I think I missed this. But how do you move a part of the picture? (I mean like how in MS Paint if you press that lil square on the top left corner you can move whatever part of the picture you want.) EXAMPLE: you make a head and you make a mouth in a different area and then you want to move it to the head. I'm sorry if you got confused by that lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Eulogy-Dignity In reply to StainedInColor [2008-12-23 08:05:10 +0000 UTC]

Once you have your selection active, use the Blue Arrow to move it around.

I have a question, when i go to try and make a color, it turns up this reddish when i want brown and its driving me crazy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Eulogy-Dignity In reply to RoseUnicorn [2008-04-24 04:45:17 +0000 UTC]

RGB is Red, Green, and Blue. Those sliders are the general color values. To get really specific colors, you'll need to play with the HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value) sliders as well.

An easy brown is to just start with orange and lower the Value a bit.
