Strangely, it is derived from engraving - or rather, the preliminary sketches used to create them... . I am glad you like him.... A high-spirited one!

I have always loved that. Them preliminary sketches.. croci?
Even since I was a child.. I adored da Vinci's sketches.

Yes... they are usually much more lively and 'free' than the finished pictures, and they are infinitely better to render movement... (croquis)

I croquis, then. Always have.

Do you sketch yourself? Pencil, charcoal, sanguine, pastel, chalk?
Yes, I love them, too. Artists like Rafaello, or da Vinci, who had a very smooth and polished painting style, made extaordinarily lively and free sketches, sometimes even caricatures, parts of anatomy or whole scenes, of such truth and personality, that you feel much closer to them than to the finished oil paintings... . Today's digital art equivalent would be 'speed-painting'....

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

InStunnedAwe In reply to eunecte [2008-03-26 19:07:38 +0000 UTC]

Already replied on the sketch question. I am a periodical person.
Mostly pencil.. but charcoal is fun. Since I am partially red/green colorblind
I am too cowardy to try oil/acrylics in a more serious way... But I have tried.
Because of that I prefer pencil and charcoal. No colors.

I also like those old illustrations in old schoolbooks. Expecially those of technical
character. Like old exploded views of clockworks.. or waterpumps..
da Vinci was a master on that too...
Speedpainting. Yes. But on the other hand the time shouldn't be an issue. What
counts is the results... and how satisfied the spectator and the artist is. Then,
if it took 25 years, or 25 secs.. shouldn't matter. And fractal art.. what's that?
Manipulating transformations in the form of triangles on a computerscreen (Apo)
Or tuning a mathematical formula and iteratively recalculate the results in a multi-
dimensional mathematical space? Is that art? Yes, because of the artists ability
to form and remake and creatively put in soul and feeling into the picture.
I am ranting... Sorry.

Not ranting, no... We have been cross posting a few times, which was inevitable. PLease don't answer again when you know the answer has already been posted...
I mentioned speed-painting because of a fault of mine, that I have been trying to correct through these sketches... I am a bit of a perfectionist, aand as such tended to lose myself into endless, minute details, instead of focusing on the general positioning, balance, lighting, and body language. I could spend hours on end on those details, and end up with a lifeless, academic drawing. As I couldn't find any other way to cure myself from that, I started out making 'live' sketches at the riding school. My time, obviously, was very limited, and I had to concentrate on a few spare lines to express movement, general shape and lighting. I finished them back home, still lilmited by those guidelines. Then I started to draw from memory or imagination, to practice what I had learned. The first attempts were still stiff, academic and a bit ackward because of the inner war between my perfectionist nature and my aesthetic preferences. it took quite a few attempts before movement and expression started to overcome the miniature painter in me...and I discovered that, not only were the drawings much more to my taste, but that it took me much, muh less time to finish them (even though experience played a part in it). Hence the speed-painting reference...

I recognise that... That's what I like with charcoal.. Big fast movements, and
to capture the idea.. work fast. And when the picture is "laid down".. just tidy
up the worst. Nonono, I just like the media.. I cannot make anything of it.. need
more practise.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

eunecte In reply to InStunnedAwe [2008-03-27 01:25:33 +0000 UTC]

Then practice, if you like it. If you have time. If you care to. Gain confidence. It took me enough time, it might not take so much for you...
How much of your time does music take , on an average day? Do you play the guitar? What kind of music do you play? Are you a composer? Do you write lyrics.... (shut-up, Agnรจs, stop bothering the poor man with your hellish nosiness) - Sorry, janne, my nosy inner demon just broke its leash. Please, don't feel you have to answer to any of this...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

InStunnedAwe In reply to eunecte [2008-03-27 01:40:29 +0000 UTC]

Time is an issue, yes.
Music.
say 10-20 mins a day on an average.
The guitar, did play the flute until I went 18.. Fumbles a little on the piano/keyboard/organ
Rock, blues, slide, own stuff and a little of what some call jazz.
Not a composer formally, have made songs and tunes, yes.
Did write lyrics in my early 20's.
Bonus answer: Want to have my own recording studio for producing my music.
Answered it. No prob.
Hey, check the time.. Is getting a bit late..

Time is an issue, indeed. I read your post at 5.30 a.m...
You know the day you have your own recording studio, you'll become a businessman, maybe a producer, have no time for music anymore... -I'm kidding - You ARE multi-talented - have you ever been in a band, or thought of creating one? (you see, the questions are endless, I absolutely have to leash that demon back, and tightly... I am very sorry for its tactlessness... it won't happen again, I promise.
Going to bed now, it's about time!

InStunnedAwe In reply to eunecte [2008-03-27 12:09:19 +0000 UTC]

Good morning.
No business man, no no no. This is the time of the internet.
One can produce music and let other listen to it. There even is
ways to actually get payed for it.
I have been in bands, yes. But that was before I become a dad.
Yes, I would love to be part a gang of old men and women, playing
nasty loud rock n' roll music, with beer, coffee and whisky.
Keep asking, no problem. But if you are getting too "personal" I would
suggest "notes" as a medium.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

eunecte In reply to InStunnedAwe [2008-03-29 03:03:09 +0000 UTC]

I was just intrigued by your avatar, and that's how my thoughts started derailing toward music, bands, and the rest. I would never presume to ask 'ersonal' questions. This is as far as I will allow myself to go... Don't worry. I may be nosy, but still have SOME education!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

InStunnedAwe In reply to eunecte [2008-03-29 12:23:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh, what I ment was that this is a most public forum. By moving our dialogue to
"notes" the other deviants wont have to read uninteresting facts about ppl they
don't know or care about.
And I am not worried.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

eunecte In reply to InStunnedAwe [2008-03-29 13:58:50 +0000 UTC]

You're quite right, of course. On both counts. No need to worry, the nosy questions are over. As for other deviants reading uniteresting facts about people they don't know, it's by reading an exchange that was certainly not meant for me, between you and Ursula, that I learned that you were crazy-mad!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

InStunnedAwe In reply to eunecte [2008-03-29 14:18:17 +0000 UTC]

?

And it's by reading some conversations between you and U I have collected a
few unverified facts about you. So a certain sneaky nosyness is a common trait
in both of us, then.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

eunecte In reply to InStunnedAwe [2008-03-29 15:37:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, I was VERY intriged by the nonsensicality of the whole thing, the overuse of emoticons, and the very obvious pleasure Ursula was taking in it. It was the one and only such exchange I fell upon (and by chance).
I do confess, though, to an irrespressible tendancy to nosiness - especially since was told as a kid that curiosity was a major fault: I understood then that the really interesting things were those I wasn't meant to know....
On the other hand, I am quite ready to complete or explain those 'unverified facts' of yours, if you care to know more....

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

InStunnedAwe In reply to eunecte [2008-03-29 16:44:42 +0000 UTC]

Don't think I didn't have fun with those emoticon-abuse.. It have happened
more than one time that I have fallen off the chair in laughter.
Curiosity is a natural instinct, and a healthy one. It's a cultural thing that it
is looked down upon as a bad trait. Curiosity in itself is harmless. It's the
missuse of gathered facts that can be harmful.
Can I ask you to "verify and complete" when the questions comes up? In context
so to speak? It would feel very weird and like an interrogation or examination to just
list the question here and now.. Not natural, between friends at all...
And please feel free to ask me too, if you want to know more.

Hugs!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

eunecte In reply to InStunnedAwe [2008-03-29 20:30:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, of course, you are mad. I already knew that.
Yes, not only is curiosity harmless, it is the foundation of knowledge.
Yes. although I wouldn't be offended by out-of-the-blue questions, especially in the getting-to-know stage.
I think I have gone as far as that getting-to-know-stage would allow, for the time being.... unless there is more you wish to tell me... ies

Well, they are only hand-drawn horses, nothing as complex as fractals, especially the way you make and post-work them...
