Well, let's break up the conversation into segments. On one, we'll talk about Dawn of War and WH40k. On the other, we'll talk about other games. Sound good?

Fine by me! But I have to warn you, you will probably carry most of the conversation as I will have NO idea what we are talking about! Rest assured, I will learn though.

OK, then.

Dawn of War is a real time strategy game with 3 expansions: Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm. It's based around using squads of units and creating buildings that produce these units to defeat your enemy. There's Infantry, Heavy Infantry, Commanders, Vehicles and Daemons. You can purchase and reinforce units, create bulidings, research powerful upgrades and equip better weapons by spending the Requisition and Power rescources. Requisition is the primary resource acquired from Strategic Points, Critical Locations and Relics. Relics are especially important, for they allow you to produce your most powerful weapons: The Super Units. The Power Rescources is acquired from Plasma Generators that you build with Requisition. Thermo Plasma Generators produce a bigger amount of Power, but they can only be built on positions called Slay Deposits.

There are several ways to win a Dawn of War game. There's Annihilate, which requires you to destroy every sinice building capable of producing units. There's Assassinate, which requires you to kill the enemy commander unit. There's Destroy HQ, which requires you to destroy the enemy's main headquarters building. There's also Control Area and Take And Hold, which require you to capture over half of the Strategic Points or Critical Locations respectiveLy and hold them for a certain period of time.

Units can be effective against Infantry or Vehicles and Buildings. Some units are effective against all of the three. Commanders arw especially effective against Daemons. Some can use several useful abilities, like jumping to another location really faat or teleporting. Most units have a Morale Meter, but not all. The lower the morale of a unit, the less effective it will be in combat. There are certain weapons that are especially effective against Morale. There's also certain points with cover, which allow extra protection at the cost of speed. There's Standard Cover, Heavy Cover (Very well protected, but very slow) and Negative cover (You TAKE a lot more damage AND are very slow).

We'll have to explore the lore of the Tabletop Game to understand the full extent of the game's story.

On the other hand, we got a super fun Hack and Slash title from 2012, Metal Gear Rising: Revenuance. Heard of it?

I am sad to say I have never heard of Metal Gear Rising: Revenuance. Heheh, it seems like such a hard choice between Heavy cover and Negative cover! Unless it helps somehow?? And does Hack and Slash mean what I think it means?

Hack and Slash are games that are focused in action and lots of slicing. Usually, they're pretty gory. The best ones are Devil May Cry (Forget the reboot), God of War, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta and recently, Metal Gear Rising.

I can provide some info on these games, if you are interested.

If you want to! My brother was recently OBSESSED with video games, and complained constantly about the fact that we have no TV. To satisfy the urge to play, he instead went on Amazon and started picking out games he wanted. He added a ton to the cart, then asked me what games I would like. I told him I didn't like a single one. He took this as a challenge, and tried to get me to pick at least one. We both agreed that if we ever got a TV and play station thingy, we would get Second Son. It's not a hack and slash game, and I don't know a lot about the storyline. We just agreed it looked cool and seemed to be the most interesting one. Have you played it?

oODark-DawnOo In reply to SilasShrike [2016-01-19 09:55:21 +0000 UTC]

No, but I've heard about it! It's from the inFAMOUS franchise. An open world adventure game starring Cole Macgrath, a man trying to reclaim his freedom and save the world after being experimented on in hopes of creating a powerful weapon.

It features a morality system, environmental destruction and side-quests with a compelling story. Buy that game, you won't regret it.

God of War is set on mythological Greece. Kratos, a former Spartan general wants to kill the God of War, Ares, for making him accidentally kill his wife and daughter, whose deaths keep haunting him every concious and subconscious moment. He needs to find Pandora's Box and rake it's power in order to kill Ares. He eventually succeeds in killing Ares and is crowned the new God of War. That's the first game.

In the second game, Kratos is trying to forget about his haunting visions by helping Sparta conquer cities. Zeus, afraid that Kratos might kill him too, kills Kratos, who comes back from the Underworld with the help of the Titans, ancestors of the Olympian gods. He then tries to get to the Sisters of Fate and go back in time to fight Zeus and kill him. He does so, but ends up killing Athens instead. He eventually wages war on Olympus and saves the Titans from being defeated by the Olympians in the past and brings them in his time to wage war on the gods.

The third game is about Kratos killing the gods in his quest to finally kill Zeus.

The game is praised for it's storyline, it's puzzles and it's gigantic amounts of gore. Really awesome stuff.

Whoa. That guy has ISSUES. BIG ones. That story as a whole doesn't seem very compelling though. The whole point is to kill the guy who made him kill his family? I can understand that for the first story, that would definitely hold my interest! But the rest of it.....Seems a little dragging. I can appreciate the puzzles and storyline, definitely! I just read Star Wars Darth Vader Vol. one. It seems like it's kind of in the middle of things. Are you reading it?

oODark-DawnOo In reply to SilasShrike [2016-01-20 08:52:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm not reading that one. What's it about?

Maybe you'please like Devil May Cry. That one has one of Capcom's nest soundtracks and combat mechanics. You play as tg demon hunter Dante.

Devil May Cry 1 follows his quest to defeat the king of demons, Mundus. Mundus wanted to take over the human world, but was stopped by the Dark Knight Sparda, who sealed him into the demon world for a long time. Sparda eventually got married to a woman named Eva and they had Dante as their son. Both of them are now dead and Dante is trying to defeat Mundus not only for the sake of his father, but for the world he grew up and loves so much. He eventually succeeds.

Devil May Cry 2 is unmemorable and forgettable.

Devil May Cry 3 is a prequel to Devil May Cry 1. Turns out Dante has a twin brother, Vergil! Vergil was deeply traumatised from the Death of his mother and wants to prove his worth to bear his father's name. He decided that the only way to do so was to gain more power. He embraces his demonic heritage and rejects his human half. So he summons a giant tower in order to try and merge the human dimension with the demon world in order to unlock his full potential. It's up to Dante to stop him. Vergil is the ultimate videogame rival, he's wearing blue, he's got well-made hair, is dead serious, uses a katana and prefers melee weapons, unlike Dante, who's wearing red, has a broadsword, is a crazy joker, has unkempt hair and like firearms. Creative bosses, banging soundtrack and amazing characters, Devil May Cry 3 has it all! Just check this out:m.youtube.com/watch?v=x6YMXXut…

And this!m.youtube.com/watch?v=v2aE_IY7…

Devi Mat Cry 4 follows Dante after Devil May Cry 1 ans a new character named Nero, who is heavily implied yo be Vergil's son. Dante is hunting down a conspiracy of an organisation of humans trying to take over the world through demonic power. Nero is an unwitting pawn in their game ad he hunts down Dante and many other demons in order to save his girlfriend. He eventually works things out with Dante and they save the world together.

And that was Devil May Cry. Next up, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Whoa. Devil May Cray Cray more like it. Dante seems pretty indestructible, so WHY doesn't he wear a SHIRT? And what's the deal with that fancy necklace? I'm assuming that it was something his father owned? Yes? No? (The cheesiness is in same boat with Beyblade!! If you don't know what that is, GOOD! Don't go looking for it, and it will save you many nightmares.) Though I have to admit it sound pretty good in the story wise department! About the Vader thing, it's about him doing his Vaderly stuff, getting extremely peeved that emperor master dude is keeping secrets from him so he hires bounty hunters Boba Fett to find out who Obi wan gave his light saber to, and this black Wookee to figure out who the guy that the emperor apparently trusts more than him, and whatnot but to do that he has to find this Dr.Aphra lady who reawakens old droids that were made specifically for war so she can do her stuff and finally gets the guy who gets beaten until he spills that beans and gives them directions roams battles ensue. In other words, Vader was being Vader.

Holy shit! I knew Vader was smart, but this is just insane!

Good eyes! Yes, that necklace is in fact a gift from Sparda. Vergil has one too. These two combine together to form the key to opening the gate to the demon world. And he wears a shirt in DMC 1, 2 and 4.

Next up is Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance! One of my favourite games of all time! But it's got a lot of crazy in it. It's a part of the Metal Gear franchise. Heard of it?

Well, let's remedy that, shall we?

Metal Gear has had MANY games, but we will focus on the main series: Metal Gear Solid. The game is all about stealth and quick thinking, with a few gadgets to mix things up a little. Created by Hideo Kojima, a master of videogames, this series is a complete masterpiece, with fun gameplay and an EXTREMELY deep and interesting storyline. Seriously, the stories of those games beat any Batman comic any day of the week. Social problems, beliefs, the horror of war, honor amongst comrades and enemies alike, it has it all. The games are more story-driven, with very long cutscenes taking most of it. The bosses in particular are incredibly enjoyable. The antagonists are not evil (most of the time) and you'll end up agreeing with them or even feel sorry for them.

It all started when an organisation called "The Patriots" wanted to make a perfect clone of the greatest soldier that ever lived, Big Boss. They created 3 clones: Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake

Our protagonist is Solid Snake, but his real name is David. At Metal Gear Solid 1 he was sent to save the daughter of a general and save the world by killing his twin clone Liquid and stopping him from unleashing a waking nuclear missile silo that doubles as a mech, Metal Gear REX.

In Metal Gear Solid 2, a new character is introduced, Raiden, but his real name is Jack. We play as him for most of the game, cutting to Solid Snake from time to time. Raiden had his parents murdered by Solidus and was raised by him as a child soldier. He had killed about hundreds of people... and he was only 14 years old. He became known as "The White Devil" and "Jack The Ripper". He eventually developed a Multipule Persionality Disorder. On one hand, we got Raiden, the man who wants to atone for all the misery he's caused. On the other, we got Jack The Ripper, who takes sadistic glee in seeing his enemies getting shredded to bits, who enjoys killing and even getting hurt himself. Raiden eventually got married to a woman called Rosemary as he was rescued from the clutches of Solidus by the Black Ops group known as FOXHOUND, which Solid Snake was a part of. He even got her pregneant! Raiden and Solid Snake eventually join together to beat Solidus and his organisation, "The Sons of Liberty". Butr it's kinda hard to beat the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! Yes, Solidus is the President under the name of George Sears. Mindblowing, huh? But as it turns out, Solidus wasn't evil. Far from it. All he wanted was to reveal a mass of information to the public in order to bring down the organisation that controlled all of his life, including his Presidency, while also being responsible for EVERY MAJOR WAR EVER, The Patriots. Sure, millions of people would die and the world economy would collapse upon itself, but at least the truth would be revealed. That's why FOXHOUND was sent to stop Solidus, they were manipulated by The Patriots all along! Solidus is killed, but FOXHOUND would continue his fight to bring The Patriots to justice.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is a prequel to MGS1 that follows the adventures of Big Boss. Too epic, play it yourself.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the story of the final fall of The Patriots. Solid Snake returns, uncovers all the secrets of his past and joins forces with MANY characters from all previous games to finally put an end to the final Gambit of The Patriots. Snake has grown considerably older here, but the game's events are not too far into the future. That's because Snake is a clone. A flawed one. He's aging faster than normal and will die. It's his last hurrah. Raiden had it rough too. See, his wife was a Patriot spy controlling his entire life after he escaped Solidus. But she had a change of heart and grew to genuinly love Raiden and have a kid with him. But knowing full well that The Patriots were still after them, she hid her pregnancy from Raiden, divorced him and married a close friend of Solid Snake, a general and the leader of FOXHOUND. Keep in mind, the general knew this and offered to marry her just to keep her and the baby safe. Raiden wasn't so lucky though. He was captured by The Patriots and experimented on with exoskeletal upgrades, but escaped eventually. But now he wasn't human anymore... he was a superhuman Cyborg Ninja! After the end of Metal Gear Solid 4, Rose revealed the truth and finally got back together with Raiden.

Metal Gear Rising follows the adventures of Raiden after the events of MGS4. Raiden now has a job as part of a millitary security firm called Maverick. Imagine mercenaries that protect instead of attacking. He was assigned to protect a Prime Minister of an African country, but failed. The attackers were a private millitary company called Desperado LLC. The ones who killed the Prime Minister, a guy named Sundowner and another called Jetstream Sam were a part of that group. Raiden is sent to stop Desperado and their plans. Which includes taking homeless children off the streets, harvesting thier brains and training them virtually into soldiers and then putting them into cyborg bodies that supress all free will and emotion.

Pretty crazy, huh?

I have to say, MY MIND IS BLOWN. It sounds SO much like the most perfect video game on the planet! It's got storyline! Fighting! Interesting characters! It sounds the epitome of AWESOME! When you said harvesting their brains, I thought of those crazy monks from Star Wars. The ones who put their brains in jelly jars. Video games are a lot more different from the usual ways of entertaining oneself than I previously thought! With movies, it's like this!

Rule #1: The first movie must drive fans of that particular book/game/comic/etc. INSANE.
Rule #2: The movie might be okay if viewed as something unrelated to what it was based on.
Rule #3: The second movie must always suck more than the first.
(This rule is optional.) Rule #4: The third must be okay. Not better than the first, but better than the second.

But with video games, it can just keep going with how ever many sequels it wants! How do they get away with that?
Also, something I have learned in my long life struggling to find a way to break free from my ever livin' constant daydreaming, is that it can NEVER. EVER. Get too CRAZY for you to handle. Unless you've watched Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.
You have watched Sherlock, right? IF YOU HAVEN'T I SWEAR I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN AND FORCE YOU TO WATCH IT. TO GOOD TO LIVE WITHOUT!! Okay, MAYBE the guy who plays Tony Stark is the better Sherlock, but, BUT! Bilbo is definitely the better Watson! I'm gonna thank you again for telling me about all the video games! It's nice to have an (apparent, anyway.) expert on them, aside from my common source of knowledge that is. Have you ever played Mass Effect? My best friend has, and she says it's amazing!! She told me about the choice you have to make at the end, and I was utterly wowed. That a VIDEO GAME (!!!) could have that OHMIFISHWHATTHEHACKAMIGONNACHOOSE?!?! affect on someone?  I have since learned different. And it still wows me every time.

oODark-DawnOo In reply to SilasShrike [2016-01-27 21:53:33 +0000 UTC]

Oh, goodness! You just hit the motherload! Mass Effect is the crown jewel of gaming!

The series makes heavy use of a large number of science fiction tropes. Nearly every aspect of the setting is well thought out, with hefty amounts of technical, cultural, and historical background data provided by an ENCYCLOPEDIA in the game! It has that much content. The games' protagonist is Commander Shepard, who, in true BioWare fashion, is customizable across the board, from gender to family background to previous military experience. A distinguished military officer, Shepard is selected to become the first human Spectre, an elite group of galactic peacekeepers given carte blanche to go about their job as they see fit. Unfortunately, nothing about the review process goes as planned, and Shepard is soon thrust into a life-or-death struggle with Saren Arterius, a rogue Spectre, who plans to seize control of the galactic capital with the help of an immense warship named Sovereign and an army of robots. Nothing is as it seems, however, and soon the very survival of organic life is at stake due to the shadowy threat of the legendary Reapers, an army of bio-organic virus robots that feast on living things and use them as their power source. Imagine it. You're peacefully going about your business in the wards of the Citadel when suddenly sirens begin to wail. Completely out of nowhere, unknown, gargantuan starships of unfathomable power emerge and exterminate everything, spreading out across your empire and slaughtering, subjugating or genetically modifying everything you hold dear, then using the liquefied slurry that used to be your bodies to produce and power more of themselves. This is the fate of the Protheans, and innumerable species before them. And it's going to happen again, and again, and again... Seriously, the Reapers themselves are the scariest thing in the game. Made even worse by several of Harbinger's lines in Mass Effect 2: "Sentient beings need never fear me." "We are your salvation through destruction." The Reapers believe that they are doing these species a FAVOR. The ending of the first Prothean message on Ilos springs to mind. "Cannot be stopped... cannot be STOPPED..." And turned into diesel was the lucky fate for most of them. The rest were forcibly mutated into the Collectors.

The franchise is primarily a RPG, with third person shooter combat. The games combine the regenerating shields, integrated vehicle sections, the stop-and-pop cover mechanics and wide open sandbox exploration elements (TONS of exploring) as you fly around the galaxy in your kick-ass starship, the Normandy. In combat, RPG (Role Playing game, like Final Fantasy) elements are present in the form of a class and level system for your party members, in addition to new guns and armor, while outside of combat you are able to influence the story in a lot of ways, and even transfer your story decisions to the next game.

The classes presented to you are divided up between three affinities: Combat, Tech and Biotic. Combat classes have abilities based on amplifying their weapons and reflexes to make them more vicious in combat. Tech classes counter the opponents' technology (jamming their weapons, overloading their shields, sending out attack drones) and hacking robots to attack their own. Biotic classes project the eponymous Mass Effect with their own bodies, giving them reality warping psychic powers that are based on warping space and gravity and providing biotic carriers. Shepard can choose one of three specialized classes for maximum effectiveness in one style, or one of the three hybrid classes, sacrificing the full range of options and abilities for each type for maximum flexibility. Your own team tends to be an eclectic mix of all three and you are only allowed to take two members with you on any given mission, so choosing which ones would be helpful for the circumstances is vital. Because gameplay evolved quite a bit over the course of the trilogy, it's hard to pin down just how the classes work, but here's a brief overview:

  • Adept: Full Biotic, based on manipulating gravity and providing crowd-control. Signature powers include the stunners Stasis and Singularity, but the basics are things like Pull and Throw.
  • Soldier: Full Combat, powers are focused on dealing as much raw damage through the use of weapons and grenades, as well as maximum damage protection. Slowing down time skills and a huge arsenal are typical. The second game gave them access to many elemental bullets they could swap out quickly, letting them adapt to enemy weaknesses.
  • Engineer: Full Tech, very useful in stripping away enemy defenses and distracting them via automated turrets and drones. They can also reprogram enemy technology and (in the first game) get bonuses to unlocking minigames or (in the second game) cheaper research projects.
  • Sentinel: The Tech/Biotic combo. In the second game, they got their signature power, Tech Armor, which: doubles shields but also cooldowns, staggers nearby enemies when depleted, and lets the Sentinel alternate between frontal assault (when it's on) and support spellcasting (when it's not).
  • Infiltrator: The Tech/Combat hybrid, has a variety of debuffs and offensive abilities. In the second game they got their signature abilities: an Invisibility Cloak and a Time Slow that activates automatically when they use the scope on their Sniper Rifle.
  • Vanguard: The Biotic/Combat class. Formerly bland, the second game gave them the signature power "Biotic Charge", a Flash Step (really quick and sudden movement) cannonball move that also recharges their shields. This encourages them to stay in the fight.

Mass Effect employs a morality meter with two moral endpoints. Rather than simply Good or Evil, however, the meter essentially measures the player's place on a scale of Cynicism VS Idealism. Paragon choices move toward idealism and Renegade choices toward cynicism. Most responses tend to be either nice or mean ways of saying the same thing ("I'm sorry, but please tell me what happened" VS "Get over it and tell me what happened"), but as you climb each meter, you unlock new conversation options which can take things in a completely different direction. These options also allow your character to influence people via their charisma or their intimidation factor, reflecting on the growing impact you are having on the galaxy.

  • The Paragon is the more humane, compassionate, diplomatic end of the spectrum, one who tries to solve problems and disputes as peacefully as possible, or at least with the motive of protecting the innocent, but shows little if any pity towards corruption or immoral actions. Paragon dialogue also tends to take a more cooperative, egalitarian stance to the other sentient species of the galaxy and the Citadel Council.
  • The Renegade is a more ruthless hero who believes in solving problems and disputes by force, intimidation, and an "I did what I had to do" philosophy, preferring to kill the enemy at all costs and allowing petty immoral acts to slip by to achieve the bigger goal. Renegade conversation options tend to show little regard for the council and more of a "humans first" position.

The story largely remains the same regardless of the choices that you make but the multiple methods of how Shepard works through any given scenario is carefully monitored between the games, which creates a more enriching experience as your particular choices resonate throughout the story and across the games The railroading on dialogue choices may not allow complete freedom of choice but it helps hold the plot together: whether you choose to play Shepard nice or mean, s/he is still a hero either way.

These choices are omnipresent, as every conversation in the game is interactive and most give a chance to score Paragon and Renegade points. Yes, Paragon and Renegade: you can climb both sides of the scale simultaneously. Instead of each choice pulling you in one direction or another, there are separate meters for Paragon and Renegade, and choosing towards one does not change your position on the other. This allows much more complex characterization.

With rich lore, beautiful graphics, exquisite gameplay, tons of customisation and content a VERY compelling storyline (Seriously, it shits on every comicbook and movie ever.), excellent voice acting and a very unique cast of characters, Mass Effect is a FANTASTIC trilogy of games... buuuuuuuuuut the ending of the whole game made all your efforts go to waste. The ending SUCKS. Here are two videos from very reliable critics thate xplain why the ending sucks. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H_A7S… www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M0Cf8…

The games are incredible... but bear in mind that the ending is complete bullshit.

I had NO IDEA that the main character dies in EVERY ending! Wow. That last link really explained the all endings, and you are totally RIGHT. You stick with her/him/they through all the games thing and they just kill them off?? What type of evil ploy are they getting at? The second link you sent me pretty much explains everything about the whole no choice thing. What were they thinking?! It must have incredibly frustrating to the gaming crowds when they realized that no matter what they choose, they will always lose their character. And nobody knows what happened to his friends? Aside from the ones who crash? I absolutely HATE it when the character dies in a book, the Divergent series does this. And while I don't like the books all that much, the death of the character completely GOT me. If the producers were trying to make it a meaningful ending, they failed. And they failed BAD. See, in my extensive sci-fi reading experience, the deaths of the main character almost always made me feel sad and cheated. But it's their friends that make a person want to cry themselves into the afterlife. The people who have either stuck by their side from day one, or the people that grew to be loyal followers and whatnot. That fact they didn't explain what happened meant that they either had no idea what ending would have satisfied the fans, or they were purposely trying to make the ending worth crap to the dedicated gamers.

Exactly. The publisher company, EA, notorious for fucking up many great franchises by rushing games into being released or using microtransactions and DLC to get more money, is at full fault here. The same thing happened with another great game franchise, Ultima, which is basically Legend of Zelda, but ten times better.

If you're going to kill off your main character, do it with STYLE! Make them go out with a bang! Their last act of defiance against fate must be something that makes you say: Holy shit, that is the most badass thing I've ever seen! Like Supergirl on Crisis on Infinite Earths. Do know how she died? She was punching the living crap out of the FUCKING ANTI-MONITOR, until he got a lucky shot and had to retreat to replenish his strength, buying our heroes precious time. Yes, she died beating up DC's Galactus (but he eats UNIVERSES, not planets) and sending him crying for his mommy! If a character is to die, they better go out swingin'!

I wholeheartedly agree!! Make them a legend! Make their death worth it!! It must be AMAZING enough to satisfy the fans or they will probably be hunted down or forced to revive them. I am not sure if Damian Wayne went out swinging, but it was impressive! And what's Ultima? I have never played an Legend of Zelda game, and sometimes I think I'm lucky because of it!

Well, we got Gears of War (which is a cool story of superhuman Space Marines doing stuff).

We got Call of Duty... which is the same rehashed story and game mechanics over and over. Americans kill foreign terrrorists. Woo-hoo.

We got HALO! One of the best stories ever told in gaming. The super-soldier John-117, more commonly known as the Master Chief, is trying to save humanity from rebel humans, zealot aliens known as the covenant, who are following an ancient prophecy and the Flood, an army virus zombies that assimilate all they see into their army. It's up to Master Chief and his trusty A.I. companion Cortana to clean up this mess. Bonus points for having a badass Covenant warrior called The Arbiter joining him in the last game. The game has a full trilogy already, and a new one is in the works, with two out of three already in the market.

And now we're going old school! DOOM, the first shooting game that was publicly acclaimed. A Space Marine known simply as "Doomguy" goes inside Hell and kills EVERY SINGLE THING INSIDE IT! With pistols, shot guns, a machine gun known as a "chaingun", a chainsaw, a rocket launcher, a plasma gun and the BFG 9000 (AKA, Big Fucking Gun). Seeing as it's an old arcade game, it's not very story based, but the gameplay is tons of fun. Entire mazes full of demons and deathtraps, with hidden rooms full of goodies, including invulerability powerups, invisibility powerups, health packs and damage increacing medicine.

Then there's Duke Nukem. A Badass who kills a lot of aliens and gets a lot of babes while saying every action movie one-liners ever, He's one big spoof of 90's action heroes and we love him for it. An old arcade game too.

I have to say, out of them all, HALO sounds the greatest! I've never been big on the gun oriented games, what's the point? I also have a HUGE bone to pick with Call of Duty! In my little tiny town they were going to have a midnight book release party for Inheritance, the fourth book of the Eragon series! I WAS SO EXCITED. And then I found out that they had canceled and replaced it with a Call of Duty party.

When you said 'one big spoof of the 90's action heroes', you reminded me of something called G.I. Joe. I know absolutely nothing about the guy, except that maybe he was made a really long time ago? I dunno.

Halo is great! I suggest you just play the first 3 games and ignore the next trilogy.

As for G.I. Joe, it's an organization of spoofs of 90's heroes that originated from a cartoon. It's not one guy.

Have I mentioned one of my favourite games, Asura's Wrath? If so, sorry for bringing it up again.

Is it good?! Sit down, son... It's gonna be a long series of comments.

This is set on many million years in the past... where technology is surprisingly more advanced than in the present.

The planet itself had manifested all it's hatred and rage created from endless abuse at humanity's hands into an endless swarm of lava creatures that come from the planet's core called Gohma. But humanity is far from helpless. They have the Eight Guardian Generals, demigods of incredible power. The source of their power is a soul-based emotion-generated cosmic power called Mantra. Mantra can be generated through prayers, by stealing the souls of others or manually (but only the demigods can do so manually). With that energy and the planet's resources at their disposal, humanity created a gigantic planetary army and a humongous battle fleet of spaceships. The army consists of MANY figures that resemble icons of Asian culture, Buddhism in particular. Giant space robot Buddhas that wield spears and laser machine guns. The most powerful of the Gohma is called Vlitra and it is immensely powerful. The demigods have been fighting it and the Gohma for hundreds of millions of years. Then at some point it all changes...

That's the setting. Should I continue on with the story itself?

GIVE. ME. ALL. (If you don't mind.) So who are the good guys here? The demigods or the Gohma? And how do you make manually? Do any of them ride dinosaurs?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

oODark-DawnOo In reply to SilasShrike [2016-02-07 22:09:19 +0000 UTC]

No dinosaurs, unfortunately. But the Gohma come in all shapes and sizes: Apes, Rhinos, Fishes, Turtles, Elephants, Stingrays... but lava ones.

We are on the side of humanity here. The Guardian Generals can create large amounts of Mantra through specific emotions that fuel their power. Each of the Guardian Generals has a Mantra Affinity, which determines what emotion they need to feel in order to create more Mantra and grow stronger. Think of internal Lantern Rings, but from the soul. The affinities are Vanity, Lust, Sloth, Violence, Pride, Greed, Melancholy and Wrath.

We cut to the latest appearance of Vlitra. The Guardian Generals are trying their best to stem the tide of Gohma as they erupt from the planet's core and head our into space. And the Generals are engaging the Gohma in SPACE, DBZ style. Our protagonist is Asura, one of the Eight Guardian Generals and the bearer of the Wrath Mantra Affinity. vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/a…

He's husband to Durga vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/a… and father to Mithra, the High Priestess of the empire. vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/a…

He's fights the Gohma alongside Wyzen (Violence Mantra) vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/a… , Augus, his mentor (Greed Mantra) vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/a… , and Yasha, his brother in law and rival (Melancholy Mantra) vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/a…

The rest of the Guardian Generals are on board a giant planetary fortress called the Karma Fortress vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/a… , which houses a superweapon fueled by Mantra called Brahmastra. The rest of the Eight Guardian Generals are overseeing the battle inside their spaceships with their leader, Deus (Pridd Mantra) vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/a… inside the Karma Fortress. The test of the Generals are Sergei (Vanity Mantra) vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/a… , Kalrow (Sloth Mantra) vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/a… and Olga (Lust Mantra) vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/a…

Deus decides to fire the Brahmastra in order to stop Vlitra before it surfaces. The giant cannon makes it mark against the target, but Vlitra static.giantbomb.com/uploads/o… manages to emerge nonetheless and destroy a good amount of the fleet with a single attack. The Generals on the field try to stop it, but are overwhelmed. Mithra uses her unique ability to manipulate Mantra and also increase the power of other people's Mantra to heal most of their wounds and give them the strength needed to go on. Asura gets REALLY pissed and uses that rage to reach his next form: Six-Armed Vajra Asura! vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/a…

With this form, he manages to put down Vlitra, but not kill it. The Guardian Generals decide to let the world rejoice on this victory, but Deus knows better. Vlitra will return and fate won't be so much on their side next time. He wants Vlitra and the Gohma gone. The time comes for a great change...

That's the first part. 21 more episodes to go. Questions?

Okay, the link with Olga shows me the Sloth Mantra dude. Other than that, every single one of them worked fine! What does Sloth stand for? (Tiredness? Sleep?) The guy called Yasha looks really cool. Who made the game? The idea of using emotions and everything is a great one! There are episodes?? I thought this was a video game! (Or are you talking cut scenes?) Is his wife a Mantra user? And Sergei looks like he belongs in an Anime! Hah! Do you know what's causing the Gohma? Is it JUST humans, or is it something else too? And what does Vlithra look like? I'm assuming lava-like. And glowing. Oh, and one more thing! Most of the Mantra users looked like they were part.......Machine? Almost android like. Does using Mantra have a cost?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

oODark-DawnOo In reply to SilasShrike [2016-02-08 08:15:44 +0000 UTC]

First, here's what Olga looks like. vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/a…

Second, Sloth means laziness.

Third, CyberConnect2 made this game along with Capcom. CyberConnect2 is known for its over the top boss fights and making a big series of fighting games based on the Anime and Magazines known as Naruto. Capcom made several great games, including the aforementioned Devil May Cry, the highly successful Street Fighter game series and the puzzle/visual novel series of games called Ace Attorney.

Fourth, Asura's wife can't produce any Mantra on her own. Also, Mantra doesn't have any drawbacks other than that your personality mostly matches the Mantra Affinity. As such, Kalrow is always lazy, Deus us always proud and Asura is always angry and so forth.

Fifth, the Mantra users are indeed cyborgs! But why that is the case is unclear.

Sixth, the Gohma are being produced by Vlitra, who is in turn the manifestation of the planet's will, corrupted by the doings of humanity.

Seventh, here's Vlitra destroying the fleet. vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/a…

And in case you didn't notice, the whole game is like an epic interactive anime. The stages are referred to as Episodes, which are all put inside seasons. Hell, the loading screens look like commercial breaks and teasers for the next part of the episode.

Which reminds me, we haven't talked about gameplay yet. Want me to elaborate on that before we move in with the story?

Wow. Heels. I cannot fathom how it is possible to walk in those. And what doe you mean, "on her own"? And their cyborgs? (and can still reproduce?) Oh, and I have another question! Are you born with Mantra or do you grow into it? Also, Vlitra look so cool.  And I'm gonna assume the game doesn't end like Mass Effect did, right? And that would be great if you could elaborate!
Aaaaaaaannnnd I kinda need your help with something. www.deviantart.com/art/Bats-Cr…

oODark-DawnOo In reply to SilasShrike [2016-02-09 08:02:05 +0000 UTC]

Don't ask me how the reproduction works. I got no clue.

Everyone is born with Mantra and can generate more with prayers or by dying. But it's only the demigods that can use Mantra as a weapon and generate more of it just by concentration of emotion.

Oh, don't worry. The game has one of the most satisfying endings of all time. It's totally worth it.

I've not played too many Assassin's Creed games, but I can tell you that Damian is Desmond and that Nightwing is Ezio Auditore. No clue about the others, though.

Now, gameplay. The game is not very innovative. It has the basic quick attack, a heavy attack that hits everything in around you in a small area and a dodge button. Sometimes you will be called out of these melee sections to rail-shooter sections. You either press the quick attack button rapidly for a stream of projectiles or you can just move the cursor (the circle with which you're aiming) to lock onto multiple targets then press the heavy attack button to fire powerful blasts of Mantra that find their targets automatically. In the melee sections, you can also counterattack through a quick-time event. Quick-time events are basically a mini-game where you have to press the correct button in a short period of time. The game is mostly an interactive cutscene, with lots of quick-time events to help you stay invested in the action. You proceed to the next part of a stage by filling up a Burst Gauge. When your enemy is down, you can use your heavy attack on him for a more focused heavy attack that will fill up the Burst Gauge a little more. Unfortunately, your heavy attack has a time limit. You can only use one per minute. Thankfully, there's also the Unleashed Mode, where you can use heavy attacks as often as you like, fill up the Burst Gauge faster and makes you resistant to enemy attacks. Every time you get hit by an attack, you can press the jump button to recover your ground and minimize the damage. When the Burst Gauge is full, you go into Burst Mode, and charge at the enemy. If you manage to get your target, you proceed to the next section of the game.

Now, I will continue on with the story. Ready?

I'm glad about the ending! It's nice to know that whatever you've worked toward isn't useless! Thanks about the Assassin's Creed info; I will definitely use it to hunt for more! And what do you mean by 'dying'? Do they release a burst of it when they die?
Gameplay sounds REALLY difficult.   One other thing I hate say, but I will not be on deviantart for a LONG time. Not sure if you're Christian, but for Lent I have given up the Internet. So it's gonna be a while before I'm back.   But I'll be ready when I get back! Count on it!

Alright, on with the story. Deus decides to kill the Emperor of Gaia and frame Asura for it. One of his Generals, Sergei, kidnaps Asura's daughter and kills his wife. Deus wants to use Mithra as a living battery to maximise both the amount and the potency of Mantra so that he can put down Vlitra once and for all. Asura finds his wife and she dies in his arms. He goes to fight Deus, but is easily beaten and thrown into the the planet from orbit, shouting his declaration of vengeance before dying... for a while. He finds himself in the land of the dead or Naraka, suffering with amnesia and is guided out by a golden mechanical spider. But why was Asura aloive in the Naraka and why didn't he fall into the embrace of death?

HE WAS TOO ANGRY TO DIE.

He climbed out and found the world of Gaia a war-torn, barren wasteland. He managed to get there after 12.000 years. The humans are being used as Mantra sources with their prayers and then killed in order for their soulss to be absorbed. Seems stealing souls gives more Mantra than prayers. Humans are treated with disrespect and used as cattle. All for the sake of the traitor generals, who have now proclaimed themselves as the Seven Deities.

Asura manages to find a village that is under attack by a Gohma horde and saves it, only to get destroyed by a force led by Wyzen. Wyzen brags about his might, but Asura givs no shits, so he punches him in the face before Wyzen can finish. Asura easily overpowers Wyzen... until he grows to the size of a mountain and redoubles his attack. And it gets crazier from here!

Holy shoot. That is one angry guy! Not sure if I already asked you this or not, so I apologize if I have, but does Asura's daughter have any power over Mantra? And that bit about harvesting human souls for it!! I guess it does make sense that Souls would produce more mantra than anything else. But man! His poor wife didn't deserve to die! Does she have any fighting skills? Was any other guy (or gal) appointed new snappy pants while Asura's was dead? Is it possible for the power to refuse to go to anybody else if the original host isn't dead? Or does it not work like that?

oODark-DawnOo In reply to SilasShrike [2016-04-03 00:14:23 +0000 UTC]

Wyzen is indeed insane. Remember, his Mantra Affinity is Violence, so it would make sense.

Asura's daughter has no offensive Mantra powers, but she can generate large amounts of Mantra and give it to others, while increasing it's potency.

Pretty much everyone started calling themselves gods. Except for Augus, Asura's teacher, who basically gives no fucks about the Gohma, Deus or Asura, he just wants more people to fight. He was never a part of Deus's plan, but he didn't exactly try to stop it.

Actually, the Mantra Affinities can be given to another demigod... With the right tools. I'll tell you about that later, because spoilers.

Asura fights the mountain sized Wyzen and manages to knock him on his as by grabbing him by his finger, after destroying his battleship. He throws him into the air, but he regains his balance in mid-air and tries to punch Asura by coming at him like a meteor. But despite Wyzen having reached terminal velocity and being much heavier, Asura us still leagues and bounds stronger than him, breaking through his punch and sending his fat butt into orbit. Wyzen activates his Mantra Reactor and uses hundreds of thousandd of stored souls to grow bigger than the size of the fucking planet! And he tries to crush Asura by poking him with his continent-sized finger! Asura's response? He roars, clenched his fists, plants his feet firmly to the ground, spreads his arms and proclaims "COME ON!" He manages to stop the finger and not get crushed, and after he fully remembers what happened to him and his family, he pushes back the finger, punches it rapidly until his arms break, and manages to throw one last punch that made Wyzen explode! Watch the fight in this video and be amazed! m.youtube.com/watch?v=H4MKvO08…

OH GOSH. Wyzen looks like overused putty. And I completely forgot the part where they're basically half human androids. (Shame on me!!) You neglected to mention Asura gets crushed his under his  house-size butt. Also that he grows multiple arms that turn to metal....Man, that dude stretches like taffy!! (those are some moobs, Wyzen.) And is his finger ever going to descend? Okay, what? He dies in the end?? Who was that guy? Was it the guy who trained him? I think I am suitably AMAZED!
I understand now, about the whole breaking his arms and still punching on  last time. Their eyes are so cool!!

oODark-DawnOo In reply to SilasShrike [2016-04-09 13:03:17 +0000 UTC]

Asura had normal eyes before Deus betrayed him. Now he has glowing eyes. It's a metaphor for being blind with rage.

After the fight, Yasha (Asura's rival and brother in law) finds Asura and tries to reason with him, make him surrender. Asura, despite having lost all of his arms, decides to fight him with headbutts and kicks. He didn't actually hurt Yasha. All he did was break the mask that he wears in order to supress his emotions and focus his power. Yasha easily overpowers Asura and splits him right down the middle.

Cut to 500 years later. A village made a shrine around the place where Asura died because it kept the Gohma away and wanted someone to believe in that wouldn't enslave them like the Seven Deities did. But no one would actually enter the shrine, for they feared Asura was too angry to tell friend from foe. A little girl named Ahria, however, enters the shrine in secret every day and offers flowers as a tribute. She goes to the shrine one day... and Asura breaks free from death once more.

Last time was 12.000 years. This time it's 500 years. He gets out faster now.

That dude is ANGRY. Stubborn too.
What about his daughter?? Is she still alive? I'm assuming people with high levels of Mantra have a longer life span. How else could she have lived 12,000 until her dad came back the first time? 'The seven deities did'? DID?? What on earth has been going on?
It's apparent he has a soft spot for children, anyway. And how does he live this time? HOW IS HE STILL ALIVE?! This guy is seriously beginning to remind of wolverine with his steadfast "Not Gonna Die" routine.

She's still alive. Deus put her on a capsule that stops time so that they can milk her for Mantra as much as they want.

Didn't I already explain the the Seven Deities are now acting like blood-hungry dictators and demand worship from the humans for Mantra and then kill them to take their souls?

He ends up on Naraka and he climbs out into the world of the living. Like I said, he's too angry to die.
