Description
They came by the thousandspacked into sinking boats
like tin soldiers, adamant and unwavering,
as they sailed towards the promised land.
They took no Gods with them.
Where they were going, none were needed.
They went towards a land of glorious disbelief,
of shining opportunity,
where the measure of a man was determined
not by birth nor marriage nor luck
but by the sweat on his brow.
And so, they sailed,
leaving their giants to clutch desperately from the shores,
bringing only their dreams with them.
They would bow to no emperor now,
worship no god-king,
offer no sacrifices to any idol
save for themselves.
This was a land that needed
neither demons nor angels,
no gods nor kings,
but only man.

Well, this reflects on you in no way whatsoever, but when I think of America I think of it as "the land of decadence and grotesque excesses". This is mainly due to my current study of Gatsby.

I strongly doubt it's unique.
The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald during what he called the Jazz Age and most others refer to as the Roaring 20's, explores the flaws of American society and aspirations of the time; the law of Prohibition lead to the birth of a sprawling black market, and this was very much symbolic of the perceived "moral decay" of the time. Also, the American dream then was of ownership; a set of aspirations built entirely on materialistic notions, where one would be consumed by the greed of owning merely for the sake of owning. Gatsby, a novel that is mainly concerned about the upper reaches of society at the time, provides a harrowing analysis of the supercilious, ultra-affluent ideals of the time that caused so much moral deconstruction. It is commonly hailed as one of the best American novels of all time.
