Description
It's been a while since I did any proper portraits. Getting better at non-referential stuff. Haven't coloured like this for a while either. Good times.Face looks flat according to some, that's something I gotta work on. Any tips for getting around that? Right now I'm thinking add more layers to the colouring job, more colours and contrast to create greater depth, but I chose not to do that many layer on this because most of the shading was done traditionally already. Tips, anyone? Thanks a lot.
Wow, 296 chapters of Vagabond three times actually did have an effect on my sketching. Arigato gozaimasu, Inoue sensei.

nice work on this, tips though? i don't really do traditional colour so i'm not too sure. i know you said most of this is traditionally shaded but still, i think a little more colour is needed otherwise it will be really hard to get a better shape with both line and colour. Yes to the darker shades, as in more contrast, the shadows could be a lot darker and perhaps a more saturated colour on the skin. Also for the hair stronger shades and shapes would help, sharper highlights and bolder shadow would give it more shape and depth especially near the top parting.
last thing and i'll shut up
perhaps more texture/shading/whatever around the lips to give them more shape. the actual form is really good just slightly too faint at the edges
Ok i lied. absolute last thing
love the illustration style of your drawing and please feel free to ignore my suggestions because colouring traditionally usually sends me into a panic. especially watercolours.

Ahaha, noted. Thanks for that. I'm still playing around with this technique of using a largely traditionally drawn and shaded picture and adding a wash of colour digitally. It's not the best quality product, but it's quite easy and simple for me (my digital colouring is hopeless).
Actually, I love using watercolours, they're just hard to handle sometimes and I don't have steady access to a good watercolour set, so I try to replicate the effect digitally on some level.

what? digital colouring is waaay easier. there is the godly power of Ctrl+Z also what type of brush are you using and what transparency? are you setting the lineart to multiply of just painting the washes over it? if not the latter then stronger colour is a must. which program(s) do you use?
btw, do i spy dodge tool on the forehead highlight?
mmm watercolours are OK as long as I only have to wash in a background. much more and i die. on one of my deviations i started the background in watercolour then gave up and switched to acrylics and ink. if i ever get you a birthday present remind me to give you my watercolour set, i have a really pro one XD

True, that, but I work in a much brisker, non-perfectionist style now. I set my lines to multiply and use a solid brush underneath with sharp edges and set to vary opacity and thickness depending on my brush-strokes. I only used a total of about a dozen layers for this, a lot less than I usually do. No, all the colouring is done on separate layers, but I didn't do that many at all. It was more of an afterthought. The whole thing only took my less than an hour and the colouring took up about 10 minutes of that so...

I suppose it could be that the hatching of the shadows and the main lines are the same value, although I think you did that on purpose and I wouldn't change it. Maybe add some deeper shadows around his cheekbones and under his chin?
That said, the shining hero is looking rather grim. I like that you seem to have portrayed him as a real person rather than simply Arthur's golden boy.

Part of Le Morte. You might recall my sketch of Mordred from a while ago.
Yeah, I really wanted to create an interesting set of characters, or a different take on already established figures. Arthur, for example, is a really conflicted leader - at times powerful and noble but very often insecure and savage. Lancelot I really wanted to be a rock-solid character - immovable and reliable, but at the same time, he's somewhat torn between his unbreakable devotion to Arthur and his own desires.

As always, I can't wait to see where you go next with this concept. Seeing it develop stage by stage is awesome.
