Description
Despite the hundreds of intelligent species in the galaxy, the mystery of the Chromatic Nebula and the entities it produces has yet to be solved. The energy that makes up their forms is impossible to study, as machines and organic equipment can not interact with it. The other problem with studying this massive, garish cloud is its lethal tendencies, and its ability to leave entire planets brittle, black husks. What is known of the Chromatic Nebula is that it is a large gas-like cloud that slowly drifts its way through empty space. Even without equipment, it is bright and colorful to the naked eye. Flashing constantly with brilliant colors, some have described it as a thunderstorm made of rainbows. This billowing celestial body travels seeming at random, blown through the cosmos on solar wind. Recent examination of its movement patterns suggest some type of intelligence though, or at least some form of control that allows it to ride the correct streams and orbits. This is due to the fact that the Chromatic Nebula never allows itself to be drawn in by a star, or gets close enough to black holes to be consumed. It is either extremely lucky, or it has some mind that keeps it safe from these fates. The other point towards this idea of intelligence is its ability to steer itself towards planets. In a universe so vast and empty, a gas cloud hitting a planet is very rare. For it to do this with dozens of planets within a single century is impossible by sheer dumb luck. Whatever mind the Chromatic Nebula has, it hungers for planets.
When this cloud of light and gas closes in on a planet, entities begin to form within the flashing vapors and bright fog. Beings seemingly composed of pure light and shadow, monsters made of rainbows and darkness. The most common form of these beings have been dubbed "Prism Moths," due to their shape and fluttery movements. Once formed, they will fly down to the planet surface and begin to feed. How their feeding process works exactly is not known, but the results of its feeding is well documented. Made of some alien form of light, Prism Moths can pass through solid material as if it was air. Physical objects do not effect them, as projectiles sail right through them with no effect. Prism Moths can feed by two ways: passing through objects with their body and limbs, or by hitting them with a vibrant beam of light that can be fired from their "antenna." Both of these methods will drain away the object, or victim's, "color." What it is they are draining is not fully known, but objects that are fed upon will become pure black and extremely brittle. Merely touching the remains of a fed upon entity will cause it to crumble into black chunks. Prism Moths will fly through the land, passing through objects and draining away all color. Entities that try to flee will either be chased down or fired upon with their beams of rainbow light. The Moths will continue to feed as the Chromatic Nebula swallows the planet, hastening the process until the consumed body breaks down into blackened fragments. Entire planets reduced to mere pebbles.
Combating the Prism Moths is extremely difficult, as their bodies require very specific weapons to effect them, and their powers are extremely destructive. The beams of light they fire off can break down any material within a matter of seconds, but that is not all they can do. Prism Moths can fine tune the frequencies of their light attacks to transmit massive quantities of "noise." By aiming these tuned blasts towards machinery and computers, they can overload the systems and cause them to explode. A single Prism Moth is capable of destroying an entire Space Carrier by simply firing these data heavy beams at it. Their light can also be honed to the precision and heat of a welding torch, allowing them to slice through metal like it was paper. A Prism Moth, or any entity born from the Chromatic Nebula is an extreme threat to all life and can spark a planet wide evacuation.
The only known ways to combat Prism Moths and other similar entities is to fight back with sonic waves or specific light-based weaponry. Finely tuned sound frequencies can be used to "disrupt" the forms of Prism Moths. A steady blast of this wave will cause them to lose control over the cohesion of their bodies, forcing them to flee, as it somehow causes pain within them. Light-based weapons can be used, and have been a recent addition to the arsenal. Studies and experiments done on the remains of "drained" victims have found that the Prism Moths cannot feed upon or "digest" a very specific wavelength and frequency of color. This "color" that they cannot absorb is extremely precise and requires the highest grade equipment to even reproduce it correctly. The slightest error in its reproduction will cause failure, making these weapons extremely delicate and hard to produce. Their effects, however, are well worth the effort. Objects covered in this specific color are immune to Prism Moth feeding, preventing them from passing through it. A Prism Moth will simply collide with it, as if it was a normal wall. When fired from a weapon, this light tears holes through Prism Moths and can successfully break them apart without harming the environment around them. More studies are being done on this color, and many of the brightest minds are trying to build the equipment necessary to create this material efficiently.
Thankfully, Prism Moths and other entities made by the Chromatic Nebula cannot travel far from their home. Some substance or condition within the Nebula allows them to keep themselves together. A Prism Moth that travels too far from the Nebula and doesn't return in time will slowly fade away into nothingness. This is a relief to many, but the Chromatic Nebula has still claimed millions of lives. Efforts are being made to find ways to destroy the Nebula, or to steer it away from thriving worlds. No real solution has been found, and each attempt has resulted in failure. All the galaxy can do is track its movements and evacuate planets before it can reach them.

This guy has been a concept that I have had for a while, but never really knew how to draw him. Still kind of don't....

i faved your early deviation that had the early Prism Moth, it looked more alien but i still like the current one, this has the potential to be a terrifying extraterrestrial Kaiju, maybe a redo?.

Thanks! Unfortunately these fellas are going to be real hard for me to ever really get right. In actuality they are composed of bright colorful lights and other flashy sparkly stuff, which I am currently unable to even draw. If I ever want to truly capture how I envision them, I need waaay more experience and skill.

colourful particles of clouds of death, very interesting idea! could some kind of bat species be used to fight the moths due to their echolocation? or whales and dolphins, even?
also, this thing kinda reminds me of Piet Mondriaan's paintings...

It would have to be a species that hits a very specific frequency with their echolocation. I could see scientists and genetic engineers creating small bats that can produce this frequency and release them in droves to drive off the Moths.

well, bats hunt down moths, so that would be a valid idea, i think.

These moths would be a little hard to eat though!
