these ones were fairly simply I do have a more complex pair I haven't worked on in quite a while.. they have cables on them super cute! As far as design usually sock yarn is self stripping so it contains all the colors and you just knit it up and see what happens

those may be the best fitted pair of hand knitted socks i have ever seen. which i will admit is because i usually ignore hand knitted sock deviations because they dont fit well.

They fit extremely well ^_^ I use a special pattern that takes the measurements of your feet/your gauge and then comes up with the perfect numbers necessary in the pattern. Ever since I used it I haven't had any fitting problems with socks

Ooh, I love how these turned out! Adorable. I still haven't been brave enough to try socks, but I'm working on my first shawl right now.
Love this pattern by the way.

Lovely! I love the colorway. The photograph is nice too as a piece on its own; I like the composition. I always admire sock knitters... I have such an aversion to feet I'm not sure I will ever jump that knitting hurdle!

Those are really spiffy! I keep meaning to try that pattern formula myself, but I've just never gotten around to it.
What yarn did you use?

It's a great formula I use it to help get an idea of how other sock patterns will work for my feet As for the yarn it's Jo-Ann Sensations Soles & More sock yarn. They have a lot of other reasonably priced sock yarn there as well ^_^

Ooh! I'll have to stop in there the next time I'm out; hopefully my local Jo-Ann's will have some nifty colours in stock.
Thanks very much!

Gotta wash wool by hand. I wash all my wool stuff with Eucalan

I know. Well, for those, I do have a portable hand crank washing machine. Now, for the wool kilt that needs cleaning, I am not so lucky. Both need cleaned, and I don't have a bathtub.

These socks are 75% wool but they are superwash so they don' felt but yea I have plenty of fiber things that are wool that need handwashed in the sink... I also have two never been cleaned fleeces that need washed.. not sure when I'll be able to get those cleaned.

I don't think I would trust my wool kilt to the sink.

Yes ^_^ you put 25% of the stitches on each of the 4 needles and work with the 5th needle. I had 13 stitches on each size 1 needle.

so the 5ht needle is the working needle? and you just keep going around?

ewm In reply to ArtisticLicenseNow [2009-03-18 03:51:28 +0000 UTC]
that's right! for the most part all you are doing is knitting very little purling involved. The only semi tricky parts were learning the crochet cast on and how to do the wrap and turns and make sure to conceal the wraps so you don't see them on the outside part of the sock. I linked above to some videos I used to learn how to do these two parts properly. ^_^

If you can knit they actually aren't too hard. The pattern I used is linked in the description. The only semi difficult parts are starting the sock it uses a crochet cast on and then learning how to do wrap and turns and how to conceal the wraps. Here are a few videos on those two parts.

no worries I always find it's best to learn from others...normally when I learn something new in knitting it's much easier to ask someone who already knows how to do it or try to find how to videos... sometimes the actual written instructions and patterns make the project more difficult than it seems and once you learn the little pieces it becomes a lot easier

yeah, that's true, i normally avoid patterns and such (unless it's tablet weaving) because i never understand them

Freygundr In reply to ewm [2009-03-19 00:44:11 +0000 UTC]
hahaha you should! it's fun! diffcult though i haven't done much weaving lately because i keep doing some strange mistake and i kept wasting more and more yarn, but i think i will start trying again soon (as soon as i finish reading all these books :/ IF i ever finish them ).
Anyway, if you want some links on tablet weaving i could give you some! there are lots of good websites to learn.

I'd love some links I saw a girl at the university I went to tablet weaving on a ridged heddle loom it looked really neat but the patterns confused the hell out of me
I would love to learn sometime.

Ok!
[link] that's a cool page with really clear instructions about how to warp the loom and weaving and all that technical stuff, plus some info about historical weaving.
[link] here you can find lots of cool patterns!
[link] more patterns yay!
I have some more links with really cool patterns but they are in spanish and german, so let me know if you want them as well!
You also might want to get the book Techniques of Tablet Weaving by Petter Collingwood, it's really cool and it's not hard to find, i think...
Good luck!

I hope its relaxing because I get very frustrated with complicated things...

ewm In reply to t-tasha [2009-03-22 14:34:44 +0000 UTC]
When you first start out it takes a bit of time to figure everything out... like what you do when you drop a stitch or if you notice you did the wrong stitch... but oh man it's 5 rows back but the more you knit the more you learn how to fix things and your knitting style becomes more consistent. Once you get into the swing of things it becomes natural some people don't even have to look at their knitting when they knit.. they could sit and watch tv or talk with friends and not look
I'm sorta there right now but depends on the complexity of the project. I've been trying to learn new patterns so I can challenge myself to try something more complex and different. So far the socks have been the most "difficult" as no only do you have to learn how to knit them but you gotta make sure you make it the right size but once you figure out the sizing it's actually a breeze I can make the socks now without having to look at the pattern
It's great to have friends that knit that way you can exchange ideas and it's much easier to learn with friends. Many cities have knitting groups that meet up at cafes! those are a lot of fun
