Description
An early sketch I did a while ago of an alien design. The large bulge on his head is a "melon" like those of dolphins or whales. These creatures will use their melons to locate underground tubers as well as communicate with each other.
I'll move to scraps later.

this is amazing! is it a continuation of the same "mellon head" as the one in your scraps here? exobio.deviantart.com/art/melo⦠or is it just a coincidence of names?

Thanks! The colored sketch I did a while before the other one, but they are basically the same concept just tweaked around.

Sort of, it was an older alien design that kiiiind of morphed into a Gapuri. I really only kept the melon and feelers on the neck, otherwise they were super different. These guys came from a much more deserty world.

It's cute, in a big-headed baby sort of way. Are these guys related to the Gapuri in any way?

These were actually sort of the start of the Gapuri, I had a design sort of like this and it just evolved until I was really happy with it, the end result being the Gapuri's current head, their bodies are still subject to some change, but I'm pretty well satisfied with them.

Ah. What did the Gapuri evolve from?

exo-bio In reply to Doodlebotbop [2012-01-06 19:06:10 +0000 UTC]
Well if you want to go reaaaally far back they evolved from a type of fish that had two tendril like pectoral fins that eventually evolved into the two tentacle like arms the Gapuri have now.

Fish people! Yay!
What happens if they lose the neck antenna?

exo-bio In reply to Doodlebotbop [2012-01-06 20:08:59 +0000 UTC]
It would be almost like losing our sense of touch, taste or sight, the antennae are used quite often in feeling other's presence around them and just taking in the environment as well as tasting the air. They can survive without it, but it will often cause depression.

I guess they don't grow back then.
Same with losing an arm I would think, but they are not as at a disadvantage as us humans since they still have two others to help out.

If a top arm is lost it can cause problems, considering the Gapuri are big tree goers they use their arms to swing. Can't do that so well with only one. The smaller arms are not strong enough to support the body, they evolved to be more prehensile and have more finesse. If one of the smaller arms is lost they can still make due, the larger arms do have prehensile digits, they are just larger and less delicate.

Oh I didn't realize that the arm sets were of different sizes. But that makes sense, nature does like its specialization.

They aren't drastically different in size, it has mainly to do with the hands.

Oooh. Strong hanging fingers and fingers meant for delicate tasks and item manipulation.
Do they still do a lot of swinging in the trees then?

Indeed, in fact many of their villages are in the trees. They sort of live in their "crops". Their crops being Khamakhama fruit trees and other fruit trees.

Oh that's super awesome! Keeps them safe from predators too I'd imagine. Do the babies climb well?

exo-bio In reply to Doodlebotbop [2012-01-06 21:17:11 +0000 UTC]
The babies are a little clumsy at first, but they get it down pretty quickly, they have to. But the adults keep a close eye on them for their first couple of months.

I've got a few travelling beasts in mind for the Gapuri, I'm in the process of coloring a Gapuri taming one actually...it's a bit rowdier of a beastie though.
