Description My final self-portrait for my Drawing and Design class! I'm rather fond of it, actually. The pose is photo referenced from a photo of myself, but it's a pose borrowed from a screenshot of a certain someone I identify with.

Also, before anyone asks, yes, that is Gallifreyan in the corners.

Basically I stuck a bunch of sneaky Doctor Who references in because my professor dislikes fanart and I'm an asshole.

Media: Tissue paper, illustration board, medium-weight drawing paper, copic markers, india ink.

Original size, 24 x 32 in.

I remember when this happened to me. The intensity of the colors combined with the heat of the fires in my hands knocked the wind outta my sails for a good while.

It's incredible how whole you feel afterward though. After you get the taste of hay out of your mouth.

great work Hannah! the lighting on your hands and face is SPOT ON!!! so beautiful. this is the best fuck you art to come out of hating a professor. in general just impressed you put your all into making it rather than was like "FUCK THIS NOISE HERE IS BULLSHIT"

sdfkjslkfjs beauty!!!

love all the colors and texture, and the way you used the overlaying patterns. that light aw yeah. is it supposed to reference a stained glass window? I totally get that sense of light coming through a window. once again amazing work!

sobbbbb
have I ever told you that your compliments are the greatest because you and your art are the greatest, and it's basically like Kate Beaton coming down from the sky or New York or whatever and saying "you do history good"?

Well, if I hadn't, there it is.

So thank you, thank you SO much, yes, the luminosity is actually one of the things that I am really proud of! The lighting placement is heavily photoreferenced, but I do feel like the light quality is all me. :3 It IS supposed to be a stained-glass window, but once that came out, all the class and the professor could talk about was the Catholic imagery
and I was just like

"yes cool okay yeah shut up about it now please"

This is extraordinary!!!

I know of the pose lol. Jo Grant is quite awesome.

I really like how your portrait fit so well into the background as if it were meant to be there.

Thanks very much! Yes, I'm a bit of a Jo fan, haha.

That's probably because I made the tissue paper background, cut out the portrait and glued it on, and then added the designs.

That's great! I am as well, as I have found that I prefer Classic!Who to NuWho. NuWho is great and all, but I love the writing of the classic episodes.

It makes it look really cool! Personally, I've always hated working with tissue paper, since it always ended up wonky XD But this is beauteous.

Both versions have pluses and minuses - old!Who has some cracking storylines but an awkward format for character development, and new!Who does character beautifully, but stumbles clumsily into romcom territory more often than I would like.

oh god I LOOOOVE how unpredictable tissue paper is, haha! I guess I'm an art masochist or something. Thank you very much, though.

Very very true. I mean, I love New!Who to death, but the "romance" between Rose/the Doctor annoys me. I don't mind her as a character, but the Doctor can't settle down. Sometimes with the old!who, I tend to notice random things that irk me. I think both have their strong points, and both have little annoying things.

It is fun to work with, sometimes I just end up derping around with it instead of doing anything serious with it.

This is amazingly gorgeous, I love it! The use of tissue paper collage makes the whole thing look so luminous! And sneaky Who references ftw!

Oh, but you are a sneaky little something what produces gorgeous art! You should be fond of it, this is most definitely the sort of thing for which fondness is required. :]

(Try hard to remain coherent, Josephβ€”)

Right, well then. I think that this is the best thing you've ever done and it demonstrates your control over the various media you used. If I were you, I'd be proud of it too.

It was a good idea to use the tissue paper to simulate stained glassβ€”I think you succeededβ€”and the designs that radiate from your face and hands all add up to great composition. It's spectacular.

That pose! I see what you did there. I'm a big fan of artists who sneak in references to their favorite works in some of their own pieces. (Also, I just took a quick look and wow is it going to take a long time to translate all that circular Gallifreyan.)

explosive-toaster In reply to Ofidian [2011-12-16 23:09:28 +0000 UTC]

It'll definitely take you a long time if you try, it's entirely made up, no refs used. It probably says something like "Vortex you dog to sneeze black hole she insinuated."

But thank you so, so much, I'm just glad that people like it, and that it turned out better than I expected. It may very well be the best thing I've ever done (certainly the best thing in this gallery, haha) but I'm going to try not to let that freak me out!

Ofidian In reply to explosive-toaster [2011-12-18 01:02:52 +0000 UTC]

That's the terror inherent, isn't it! Even when you've done something fantastic and involved you don't want people to forevermore expect that level of involvement on every piece. Nobody can create a masterpiece every time.
