Description
L1A1 Assault Rifle. "Right arm of the free world."Primary British weapon throughout the latter-half of the twentieth century.
I did the modeling and textures, Darko did the scope and texture touchups.

How do you get the base layer black like that with the touch of contrast?

It's technically a very dark yellowish-gray. Throw in some brush strokes (this is where a Wacom comes in handy) of a touch darker color and you have a nice weathered 'black'.

I found some good metal textures that seem like they should work. I really only photo texture

That's brilliant mate. But I'd say the scratches are a little too bright. Tone them down and you have yourself a killer model/texture.
Oh, and I'm sure the stock and front grip should be made of wood or plastic? This looks more like polymer.

To be honest, I think the render made the model's textures look a little funny. And unfortunately, the textures are out of my hands at this point. My originals had less contrast/were more grey.
I think the whole thing will look better in the engine itself. (Should also help reduce that "polymer" look, because you're right -- that's what it looks like.) I'm looking forward to grabbing some screens of it in game later.
