Description
In November this year, the guided missile frigate HMAS Canberra will be decommissioned after nearly 25 years of service in the Royal Australian Navy.A couple of weeks ago, the crew from the Canberra exercised their right of Freedom of Entry to the city of Canberra for the last time. The commanding officer - CMDR Raymond Leggatt (on the right in this shot) - led about 150 members of the crew on a parade through the streets of Civic.
I took this shot in the middle of the formalities of the parade, where the Commissioner of Police stopped the parade and formally demanded to know by what right the crew was marching on the street with draw weapons.
It was actually pretty cool to see.

Very cool. Great to see old traditions being brought back in honor of what was.

Sometimes I'm quite against traditions, because often people forget what the hell the purpose of them was for and they lose their significance.
This one was different. I thought it was pretty neat indeed

WasnΒ΄t the Commish informed about the march? One would think heΒ΄d know about such things, cutting traffic and all.

And I thought Canberra was just full of old stuffy pollies. Nice shot and I love the facial expressions on all these guys

It's an unfortunate misconception a lot of people have about Canberra. It's actually a great town, with a lot to offer

Only been to Canberra once, way back in the early 80's. It was very hot and I remember seeing a miniture village with lovely gardens. Got terribly lost driving back to our motel though

Ahh, yes, Cockington Green. Never been there myself. Might have to go sometime in the spring and take some photos

It was a very hot and humid day when we were there. Spring sounds like the best time to go.

Awesome shot. Did you notice at the time that the second guy in line with a drawn weapon had his beady eyes on you?

Yeah, I did. I think that's the ship's XO.
Either way, you don't mess with a guy lugging a sabre

I only found out about it that morning, and had to google to find out what time and where it was on.
Glad I made the effort though
Thanks for the great comment too
