Why is this version so badass yet in the film they looked like they were made from fresh metal after flying through the forest, they should have had this look, dirty, a little rusted and not as reflecting. Great model! But the film made this do a "Sonic 06" in that the "beta" looked and functioned better than the final [sonic 06 betas were less buggy and had better features than the final]

My job on the film was animation modeling and mostly texture art. I didn't do the rendering but I do know some of the problems they were presented with. My rendered images that you see on my portfolio take over 25 minutes to render, they are high resolution and have alot of images to read off. If they rendered the movie like that they would still be rendering right now. They had to knock the 4k resolutions down, and maybe take out some of the maps and connect one map for specular diffuse etc. It was probably rendered at a lower resolution and motion blur takes a lot of the details away also. I know it had to be color graded in post so that may have been a factor also. And I'd bet that it was just one guy doing all of the above work, I'm not surprise the quality was lost in the final output.
I took some time and rendered out the egg carrier yesterday and it looks way better than the movie and I got the render time down to five minutes but its a little too late. But it takes a lot of devotion to get something to look right, I lit it a couple of times and I finaly got it right. Wish we had the manpower to have a pipeline where one guy would focus on lighting and another on rendering, and seperate supervisors etc. But we didn't.
I'll be posting the newly rendered egg carrier when I get the ok from the studio.

Yeah, i get the issues, ive done animation before, i recreated the Warner Bro shot at the start of the last Harry Potter film, and it took ages to render into a video file. I loved the way the BBombers came out, they just looked too shiny to be fighting in the forest, but true, its hard to make things look good, but also meet a good render time. you need a couple AlienWare Desktops to render at a good speed

Yeah I would love to have my own render farm.

We all want a render farm! Imagine having so many badass PC's for rendering things at such a res! The film could have been released at full 4K res if you had an alienware render farm!

I wish I designed it lol. I did the textures and rendered this image but another member of the team had this designed before I jumped aboard. I shall pass the compliment.

Original and still feels very much like the classic buzz bomber. Very nice!

Thanks it took awhile to get it to look right and we were way behind schedule. If you look at Sonic Fan Film trailer number 3 it has no textures at all, looks like a totally different machine.

Oh, wow. I didn't realize that was you who did the buzz bombers for the film. I thought it came out very pro^^ Yeah, the textures really set it off though. Keep it up man!

They looked awesome. They were portrayed well. Although, I'd have chosen more of a machine gun sound for their weapons.

I agree but in defense we had no sound guy. Its not the end of the road though, we can always tweak and re-render add and subtract from the film. I for one would like more buzz bomber screen time!

Awesome! Not sure if you would, but do you know why Robotnik's mustache was greatly reduced for the film?

ezraprogrammer In reply to TAILS-FAN1 [2013-01-14 21:41:20 +0000 UTC]
Easy, it looks stupid. I know people want things to be 100% true to the fiction. But seriously it would look dumb, people wouldn't take his acting seriously, I know I wouldn't. Some things don't translate well into live action or 3D, I think sonic himself struggles with this when I look at video games and even our film. The big head big shoe character looks cool in certain poses but is hell to animate. Its hard to get the character to walk correctly or even scratching the top of his head would be impossible. Imagine humans were built like that.

I suppose you do have a point with the model. I'm no animator. I would argue (with respect to all who worked on it) that the mustache is iconic and is even in the symbol used in the movie. I just feel like it could have been toned down enough to work and still look like an Eggman mustache. It even worked with the ultra-realistic Sonic 06 models. Did the crew give it a try before deciding to go with the small mustache?

I don't know I wasn't involved with the actors. I came in as a texture artist originaly, then I did modeling and animation. I really don't have a problem with the mustache, especially since it was a live action version. It could work if it was a cgi character with the original mustache but on a live actor... no. Maybe they did try but I don't think its a big deal, I think the actor played the role well and thats what really matters to me. I was recruited cause I was making my own fan film, but it was just me doing the models, you can see some of the concepts and design at www.facebook.com/mobiustheanimatedseries

See, I originally thought you wouldn't really know based on what you said before. I understand how you can't see the mustache on a live actor, and he did play the role well, but I can envision a proper mustache. Smaller than the one we know and love, but similar in appearance. Still, the whole thing came together nicely. It was just one of the few things I think could've been done differently. I was more forgiving than some about things like the CG.

Have to ask you are you on second life?
People with 3d modelling tool are making a fair amount of cash out of it right now.
Ans are you any good at making 3d clothing?

No I haven't heard of second life. I don't have that much experience with cloth modeling. My portfolio can be viewed at www.verafx.com
