oh. when u do use colored pencils how do u scan it cuz my art ends up screwed up when i color and post it. any advice?
π: 0 β©: 1
f0xyme In reply to cerom [2008-03-28 17:22:46 +0000 UTC]
well, in the first place when you color with the pencils, make sure your colors are thick and vibrant. when You scan it it will be a little flushed out of color but I just adjust it on photoshop a little.

This was really nice to use actually. I just picked up some of my colored pencils for the first time today, and looked at this for some study material. For some reason though, I find the transition from graphite to colored pencil to be tough one. It kinda alienates a lot of my own set rules in art... :\
Thanks for this though.

the transition from graphite to colored pencil? is that just something you have a problem with, or something your asking me about in my tutorial, cuz I would have to say graphite and colored pencil use pretty much the same techniques...

Lupinator In reply to f0xyme [2007-01-27 23:53:21 +0000 UTC]
No, it was just me stating my mind there.
The problem is I have very weak line art, and I tend to like to shade like a feakin' mofo, so I pretty much form shapes before lines, and I find I have to erase all my wonderful shades first before I can start to lay down any color. It's just kinda different to me, and eliminates virtually all of my much needed experimentation. Really though, I think the problme is just me here, I'm super self taught, so I think I just do everything differently than everyone else, so that's why my methods don't transition well.
Still as I went along, I could still sense my skills evolving throughout the entire experience. I think I just need to mess around with it more is all. Second thing I need to do is get more of a variety of colored pencils...

oh okXD I just looked at your art, you have some amazing pencil skills and I get what your talking about.
Maybe you could try like, doing what you do, then tracing the outline with an ink pen, and then erasing the extra stuff. then you could come in with the colored pencils....I dunno it's worth a shot, or of course you can just stick with the lines and resist from the shading, I dunno....

Thank you for the kind compliment, heh, but like many others, I'm prejudice against much of my own work, so we'll compromise and just say I'm over-rated then...
I'm glad you could gather an idea of what I'm talking about though. I like your suggestions though, and I do happen to have a nice calligraphy pen too, the only problem is I don't really know how to use that! Guh... haha, yeah, I'm probably one of the most inexperienced artists around. I've been in the trade for three, maybe four years now, and I've only ever worked with my mechanical pencils. But, we all gotta start somewhere though... right? So that's what I'm trying to do now.
Thanks for all the help here. I have one more question though... What colors do you mix together to get grey?? I have a metallic grey in my colored pencil set, but it not particularly good for a lot of... everything.
π: 0 β©: 1
f0xyme In reply to Lupinator [2007-01-30 13:34:23 +0000 UTC]
well, maybe you should just take your pen and start sketching things out, experimenting, and without pencils and erasers...
grey....you can't mix colors to get grey, unless you just use black really lightly....but that usuallly looks cheesyXD. If your talking about using the grey as a base, then you should prolly shade with black, dark blue, or dark brown and maybe some white.... hope that helpsXD if you need more color, just go out and buy crayolas or something, it's what I haveXD

j00 be lyin' bout dat grey, yo! I totally read somewhere once that you can mix colors to get grey... I swear I did...
I have some Prismas and they are pretty nice, and it'd be super cool if I could just go out and buy some more colored pencils and all... but yanno, I'm kinda stuck in the middle of the desert in Iraq right now, so that's a bit difficult at the moment. XD

f0xyme In reply to Lupinator [2007-01-31 13:54:33 +0000 UTC]
XD no I'm not, you can try mixing black and white colored pencils, but I guarantee that won't look too good. and yes it is true that you can mix grey, with paint at least.
oh that sucks

Lupinator In reply to f0xyme [2007-02-03 04:38:04 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I asked a friend about the grey too... and she said mix black and white... I think I'm just going to go on e-bay and buy like a thousand different colored pencils or something, so I never have to worry ever again... haha... I'll have 15 shades of grey then. ^_^
But thx u 4 all teh halp! You take care now and I'm gonna watch you.

mixing greys in colored pencils doesn't look too good, I'm not suggesting itXD but you can do what you want, I would just go on e-bay and buy a ton like you said
your welcome (:
