Description
FULL VIEW IS LARGE.Okay so this started as a random train of thought last summer when I was reading up on the online collective Anonymous. I was also reading a lot of science fiction back then and this kind of spiralled off from there.
I find the theory behind Anonymous to be a very interesting one and I think it's even more fascinating that it works, in its' own way.
That being said, this comic is purposefully vague. There are several different ways to interpret it, and if it's not crystal clear in its' message, then that is because there is none. Well almost. I guess the only thing this comic has the balls to really say is that, however many (hundreds?) of years later, Anonymous is still around.
Let me know what you think.
Done in Photoshop.

i think what i got out of it was "the roles have changed", anonymous of the future is somewhat like an oppressive govt that they would originally oppose, they "became the monster they were trying to slay" so to speak. Hence, " while we were busy telling the world to expect us, we failed to remind ourselves to do the same". Its also possible that anonymous has split into two factions, one being the "traditionalists" and the other evolved into one that is lead by the tyrannical artificial intelligence which at one point needed humans to maintain them, but have now surpassed that level. The AI anonymous are probably the evil extremist version of anonomys where as the human side wants compromise, the ai wants to eliminate the human anon because they are inefficient and not extreme enough

That's certainly a viable take.
Essentially it's a matter of perspective. Both sides here consider themselves to be the true Anonymous.

Nice twist. For me it first seemed that the white haired guy was gonna be anonymous since the other guy seemed a bit authorative and had the upperhand.
To me it always seems like anonymous is the underdog.
Cool comic.

I for one am neither a supporter nor a hater of anonymous. I just liked the general idea, it provides a good basis for speculation (and fiction).
Thanks for all the input!

I think the concept* of Anonymous (*don't you wish there was a italic option?) is quite grand in the fairy-tale type. A brave group of anonymous hackers/knights fight against the evil tyranny/king that calls itself a "government". It's a wonderful idea. But that's not what I see in Anonymous. Maybe, in the beginning, they were that fabled group, but now I see them as a mass of hackers/trollers who will attack anything that displeases them and usually put people's privacy on the line for it. Sony tires to stop hacks on the PS3? Anon gets ticked and compromised almost a million accounts and pulls down websites. They tore down the CIA website, attacked Paypal (who lost about 5.5mil) and other companies when they denounced WikiLeaks after the site released hundreds of classified US diplomatic cables. They take user information like social security numbers and post it publicly for sh***s and giggles, they take down entertainment sites like Minecraft and League of Legends "for lolz", they attack government websites and used polices' stolen credit card numbers to donate to different causes.
Their attack on anti-democracy in the Middle East, homophobia, child pornography, censorship, tyranny and abuse of power is appreciated and thoroughly applauded, but compared to the enormous amount of problems and chaos they create Anonymous has done much more damage than repair.
There's my two cents. Don't kill me. : )

Anonymous is not that simple because all you have to do to be part of it is to say you are. Anonymous is pretty much only a name to use. A mask.

There is an italic option, you need to use html.
< i>insert text
without the spaces near the < and > should do the trick. ^^

I don't disagree with you outright, but one thing:
anonymous (as far as i understand) is just a concept, an outlet. It's not one solid group of people and it's certainly not organized. there is no clear "they" to even speak of. I don't actually know, but it would stand to reason that the people who for example attacked sony, or league of legends, have nothing to do with the people who exposed a ring of pedophiles.
Anyone can be anonymous. As such, the name can be used or misused for whichever action a group of individuals seem fit (which is kinda what this comic is about). The name itsself has no positive or negative value; it is neutral. The individual actions taken by anonymous certainly can and should be judged on a moral basis, but anonymous as a whole, cannot. Because said whole does not exist.

Well, Tflow, Topiary, Sabu, Kayla (from what've I've heard, very notable Anons) and their LulzSec didn't impress me. Especially their "Titanic Takedown Tuesday" where they literally went, "Tell us what you want down and we'll do it." The heck did EVE ever do it Anonymous?
But isn't the basic thesis of Anonymous, regardless of title, to defend against government abuse of power, censorship and tyranny?

FabianMonk In reply to LohceAzcry [2013-08-09 02:58:33 +0000 UTC]
Yeah i thought it was about freedom of speech, mainly.
but that's in theory. an ideal that, whoever originally came up with the concept, might have wanted other people to strive towards. The fact that anyone can be anonymous however, that the name can basically be used for whatever, inevitably leads to misuse. That comes with the territory.
Regarding lulzsec: you clearly know more specifics than i do, so correct me if i'm wrong, but they went ahead and gave themselves their own name. Even if everyone of them is also an anon, what they did in the name of lulzsec, happened in the name of lulzsec.
I'm not even defending them (or anonymous, for that matter). I just feel it's a bit of a misunderstanding when people speak of anonymous as some kind of coherent collective, in which every single member is held responsible for every single action ever taken in its' name.

Alright, I'll give you that. They did say they weren't part of Anonymous, but the fact most if not all of them were Anons doesn't help. And the partnership with Anonymous for the infamous "Operation Anti-Security" really doesn't help either. Go look it up if you haven't. It's not pretty.
And, yes, it is misleading to think of it as a shadowy collective of high ups who gather in a dark room and discuss plans. But evidence proves they act like a group on multiple occasions: if a lot of people like an idea, like, oh, vandalizing the website of the US Navy, a lot of people under the title Anonymous come together and do just that. They, as in everybody who is a part of Anonymous, need to take responsibility for their injustices because, no matter what people say or do, they will be viewed by most as an organization because a lot of people don't really know who, or better, what Anonymous is. Most of their info comes from a flick of the eye on a news page.
So when half a million usernames and encrypted passwords belonging to players of Battlefield Heroes is published online by people who wave the flag of Anonymous and it shows up on the news, Anonymous themselves can't direct the blame when they do nothing about it. The people who cause mayhem and chaos are under the name Anonymous and tarnishing the reputation. And you don't have to say "OK guys stop being mean or you're out" or take drastic action. All you have to do is say, "Hey, there are some idiots in the world who like to use the name for the wrongs reasons. Their actions represent a minority. Anonymous is not about that."
Sorry for the rant. I'm just a little peeved, cause I just popped off a discussion of total blind faith to Anon. *shudders*

No worries, i get where you are coming from.
i'm pretty sure anonymous has already done what you described in your second to last paragraph though, aka publicly explain the concept and the dangers that come with it. there is a website, undoubtedly set up by anons, that explains exactly this. I don't know if it exists in english, i read it in german back when i did my research, but i'm assuming it does.
It's tricky because of course when someone, or a group of people, do something harmful in the name of anonymous just because they can, and this gets reported on the news, blame is assigned to that name. And when someone who doesn't know shit about anonymous sees a report along the lines of "anonymous hacked an assload of accounts", that's where that misunderstanding is born. makes sense, people should be held accountable for their actions. The problem is, anonymous gives people a way to avoid just that. But most people wouldn't get that, and think it's all one organization.
But again, this comes with the territory, this is inherent to the concept itsself. It's precisely this ambiguity that i find interesting.
again, anonymous as a concept is not good or bad. It is neither, and both, at the same time.

I think I understand. Both of them are anons actually. Since this is taking place in the future, my guess is that the "convict" is in a part of the organization that has gone rogue. HE thinks he's right because he belives he is following the cause intended by the organization. meanwhile, the classic depiction anon explains through certain imagery to keep it vague," because its a anonymous thing," TRANSLATION: We started out fight for the right to remain free within our lives, weather it be within the web or on in real life. We defended those who were not able to fight for their own right at freedom. We attacked what watched others behind the one-way glass, monitored every action in the world, then used that information to exploit and threaten the freedom of those who were under protection. We created a system that cut out the middle man, that stopped anyone from being able to gain control over others. What we neglected was that while we were defending others outside, the organization was being overtaken by ideas on the inside. People like you, took the organization seriously, and that was a good thing, but they began to put that feeling of security before what mattered. The system became an infected drone, bent on serving its purpose no matter what the cost. People like you did not realize that even though they were doing what they were asked to do, they did not realize what damage they could cause. Their crime... Your crime, is not the consequences of your actions, but your neglect to the extremity your actions can reach. You did your job, but you did it without the purpose it was given. you were here to defend, instead you put the safety of those you were suppose to protect in jeopardy to reach your goal of protecting them. You did not FORGIVE those whose purpose was to do wrong, but you FORGOT the purpose of defending others.

Hey, thanks for the kind words as well as the in depth analysis!
You're basically correct too!
Or at least that is one way to interpret this story. The flipside to this version is that, for all we know, the guy in the suit may be representing the side that went rogue. They both present themselves as the voice of Anonymous, but (from what I could tell while reading up on it) there is no one clear voice.

This is amazing. Great job.
Personally, I find Anonymous to be a joke. Yes, the whole "movement" is comprised of hackers, but they're too frivolous to be taken seriously. They hardly do anything at all, yet constantly remind us that we should "expect them". And they quote far too many things for their own good. I guess their creativity is diminished by their egos. All in all, Anonymous is a little fad comprised of computer nerds that will die out and be forgotten sooner or later.

FabianMonk In reply to gvcci-hvcci [2013-04-20 09:26:22 +0000 UTC]
Well I think the interesting bit is that, in theory, you can't really label Anonymous in such a general fashion. There is no unified goal, no one direction. That makes it very difficult to categorize, and the apparent lack of structure / leadership is why a lot of people don't take them seriously. But "they" could be anyone, it's just a concept.
Personally I'm curious to see if the Occupy movement is going to experience another renaissance in the summer.

Meh, most people treat them like a unified people (from what I've observed). There's no real threat from them, really. You take the same precautions with any hacker and they really won't be able to do anything worse than possibly overload your computer with porn. Bad analogy, whatever, but it's annoying how powerful everyone makes them out to be. ._.
